Japan – NEC develops high-speed, high-capacity power amplifier for next generation networks

NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has developed a power amplifier that will serve as a key device for mobile access and fronthaul/backhaul wireless communication equipment to enable high-speed, high-capacity communications for 5G Advanced and 6G networks. This power amplifier uses GaAs technology that can be mass-produced and has achieved the world’s highest output power(*) of 10 mW in the 150 GHz band. Capitalizing on this, NEC aims to fast-track both equipment development and social implementation.

Newly developed D band power amplifier

5G Advanced and 6G are expected to deliver 100 Gbps-class high-speed, high-capacity communications, equivalent to 10 times the speed of current 5G. This can be effectively achieved through the use of the sub-terahertz band (100 to 300 GHz), which can provide a wide bandwidth of 10 GHz or more. In particular, early commercialization of the D band (130 to 174.8 GHz), which is internationally allocated for fixed wireless communications, is expected.

NEC continues to make advancements in technological development by leveraging its knowledge of high-frequency bands cultivated through the development and operation of radio equipment for 5G base stations and PASOLINK, an ultra-compact microwave communication system that connects base stations via wireless communication.

The newly developed power amplifier uses a commercially available 0.1-μm gallium arsenide (GaAs) pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) process. Compared to CMOS and silicon germanium (SiGe) used for the sub-terahertz band, GaAs pHEMTs have high operation voltage and lower initial costs for mass production.

In terms of circuit design, this power amplifier eliminates factors that degrade performance in the high-frequency band and uses an impedance matching network configuration suitable for high output power. This has resulted in the achievement of excellent high-frequency characteristics between 110 GHz and 150 GHz as well as the world’s highest output power for a GaAs pHEMT.

In addition to the realization of high-performance, low-cost radio communication equipment above 100 GHz, this power amplifier will accelerate the social implementation of 5G Advanced and 6G.

Going forward, NEC will continue developing technologies aimed at achieving high-speed, high-capacity, cost effective wireless communications for 5G Advanced and 6G.

This research is supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan (JPJ000254).

NEC will announce further details regarding this technology at IEEE Topical Conference on RF/Microwave Power Amplifiers for Radio and Wireless Applications (PAWR2023), an international conference scheduled to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA starting on January 22, 2023.

Japan – Hitachi Develops a Touchless Operating Panel Establishing an Elevator Without Physical Floor Buttons that Allows Users to Experience a Completely New Sensation

Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501) and Hitachi Building Systems Co., Ltd. announced that they developed a touchless operating panel establishing an elevator without physical floor buttons(1) that allows users to experience a completely new sensation.

This newly developed touchless operating panel replaces the floor buttons normally found in an elevator car and enables elevator users to register a destination floor just by passing a finger over the floor displayed on the panel (LCD monitor), enabling the touchless use of the elevator.

This newly developed touchless operating panels have been adopted to elevators in Tokyo Midtown Yaesu completed in August 31, 2022.

Features of the Touchless Operating Panel

1. Enabling the Touchless Use of Elevators Just by Passing a Finger over the Panel

An elevator user can register the destination floor just by passing their finger over the floor displayed on the touchless operating panel’s monitor in an elevator car. An infrared sensor detects the finger’s position and registers the floor, enabling the touchless use of the elevator.

2. Realizing a Futuristic Elevator Design Without Floor Buttons(1)

While conventional operating panels must have as many floor buttons as the building has floors, the touchless operating panel enables the operating panel to be simplified and miniaturized, making unprecedented futuristic elevator designs possible as since it displays floors on an LCD monitor.

3. Panel Screens Increasing User Convenience

The panel has a direct registration screen including the frequently used floors, such as the lobby, that can display a set of up to six floors and information about them, and a keypad registration screen that allows users to enter their destination floor using the numerical pad. The direct registration screen is the initial screen to increase user convenience.

Additionally, the installation of a card reader in an elevator car linked to the panel enables the display of special floors that only people with registered card have access to on the screen to improve security and convenience at the same time.(2)

It is also possible to flexibly change the floors or floor information that is being displayed based on changes in the building’s tenants.

(1) Emergency buttons must be physical buttons.
(2) When using a card which only grants access to one destination floor, there is no need to pass a finger over the touchless operating panel because the destination floor is automatically registered.

Mazda Develops New Special Body Color Rhodium White Premium

Mazda Motor Corporation today introduced Rhodium White Premium, a special paint color born from our unique Takuminuri(1) painting technology. This new color will be available this summer, predominantly for our Large Product group models, starting with the Mazda CX-60(2).
Mazda believes color is a crucial part of what gives shape to a vehicle, and thus we are focusing efforts on developing colors that accentuate a dynamic and delicate expression via the Kodo – Soul of Motion design theme. Rhodium White Premium is a pure white inspired by Japanese aesthetics finding beauty in simplicity and the absence of superfluous elements. Furthermore, the paint’s fine grain accentuates the shadows on the surface of the vehicle complimenting the metallic texture of Rhodium White Premium.

Developing Rhodium White Premium, we were able to take Takuminuri to new heights, successfully mass producing an expressive color using only three layers: a clear layer, a reflective layer and a color layer. The color layer provides a newly developed white pigment that delivers a silky smooth, fine-grain white. As standard practice with white colored paints, the undercoat tends to show through, and the clear coat is generally thicker than for other colors. However, Rhodium White Premium uses a newly developed pigment thanks to which we were able to reduce the thickness of the color layer by up to 30%(3). This also contributes to more efficient use of resources and a reduction of CO2 emissions during the production process.

For the reflective layer, we use a method in which paint containing ultra-thin, high luminance aluminum flakes is applied meticulously to achieve a uniform thickness and which then dramatically shrinks in volume during the drying process. Resulting in an extremely thin reflective layer down to approximately 0.5 microns or about 7% of the thickness of a typical reflective layer.

Moreover, we were able to achieve a hand-painted like finish with the aluminum flakes smoothly aligned at regular intervals in the reflective layer(4). The entire surface gleams when exposed to light and displays a realistic metallic texture. Individual aluminum flakes are distributed evenly and parallel to the undulations of the body surface, producing a glossy and shaded appearance when hit by light despite the bright white color of Rhodium White Premium.

As we believe color to be a key component of any vehicle, Mazda will continue to pursue new color expressions and painting technologies to enhance the attractiveness of our products, aiming to become a brand that shares a special bond with its customers.

(1) Mazda’s painting technology that reproduces a precise, high-quality paint finish as if done by the hands of a skilled craftsman on an automobile mass production line. The new color is the third of such colors following Soul Red Crystal and Machine Gray Premium.
(2) Available in Europe this summer and early fall in Japan
(3) Compared to Snowflake White Pearl Mica
(4) The same technique used in Machine Gray Premium
