Exhibition Opening: Unquestionable Abstraction

 Unquestionable Abstraction
July 29 – August 25, 2023
Opening: Saturday, July 29, 2023, 4:00 – 6:00 PM

Through a nuanced engagement with form, color, and texture, the artists invite the viewer to participate in a multisensory exploration of feeling, embodying a range of affective states from serenity to discomfort. The diverse approaches to abstraction challenge preconceived notions of representation and invite the viewer to engage with the materiality of the artworks to access deeper levels of meaning.

Pushing against social convention, abstract artist LE BohemianMuse creates multifaceted artworks that reflect a story of defiance with a subtle vulnerability through the exposed layers and visible stages of creation. BohemianMuse is a first-generation Ghanaian-American artist from the San Francisco Bay Area. As a self-proclaimed colorist, BohemianMuse works against creative stagnation by placing a focus on textural elements which act as a source of detail, energy, and complexity in place of obvious colors.

German artist Bernhard Zimmer produces layered, subtly textured paintings that contain diametrically opposed elements—order and chaos, abstraction and representation, boldness, and subtlety—in exquisite tension. Working with oil and mixed media on canvas, he paints in color-fields of soft shapes and delicate lines. Full of strength and fragility, Zimmer’s works reward patient viewing, revealing their rich visual nuances to those who take time to delve into their layers of visual emotion.

Abstract minimalist artist Jason DeMeo creates artworks that work to serve as a meditation for the viewer, drawing them toward the timeless concepts of truth, beauty, and goodness. Through his work, he seeks to express universal themes by bringing his eclectic personal experiences, philosophies, and emotions to the forefront. He has a deep belief in the power of art to bring transformation to both spaces and people.

Gail Titus works spontaneously and intuitively without regard to realistic forms, but with a focus on textures, colors, and interesting shapes. She creates artworks by intuitively applying paint to canvas using brushes, scrapers, water bottles, and other objects. As this process continues, certain areas of the painting will start to feel undeveloped. This is when she will methodically rework those areas until the artwork gradually feels resolved.

Heny Steinberg arranges her paintings through a grid or lattice system which is then deconstructed and re-imagined. The shapes within Steinberg’s work transcend their two-dimensional representation and have meaning beyond appearance. Her process begins with concrete images and references, yet over time gives way to her process of decontextualization.

Sarah Johnson infuses passion, heart, and a lifetime of creative experience into each painting. Her radial series exhibits both uninhibited freedom and methodical technique. Through colors, textures, and movement, Johnson’s acrylic paintings on canvas radiate joy with pleasing repetition and form. Each series has a meaningful message, adding both truth and beauty to your walls. Johnson is based in Dallas, Texas and is also a recording musician.

Japan – NTT DOCOMO group to release trial AI system for monitoring river and reservoir water levels

NTT DOCOMO, INC., NTT Communications Corporation and NTT Comware Corporation announced today that they will begin providing a trial version of an AI-based system for monitoring the water levels of rivers and reservoirs to companies and local governments nationwide, effective immediately. Through the trial, the companies expect to improve the system’s AI functions and usability, aiming at a commercial launch by March 2024.

Notably, the system eliminates the need for physical water-level gauges and instead uses virtual gauges and AI technology to visualize real-time images and time-series data of water levels on a screen. Also, the system can automatically notify authorities if a predetermined water level is exceeded.

The system uses cameras and other dedicated equipment installed near a river or reservoir to capture video images of the water. A virtual gauge is overlaid on the video and AI video-recognition technology accurately determines the water level in real time. Specifically, the system uses a unique algorithm and AI image-segmentation technology to analyze the ratio of the water surface to the land area displayed on the virtual gauge. Accuracy can be improved by using multiple virtual gauges.

Personnel in charge of monitoring rivers and reservoirs for municipalities, etc., can check water levels and configure AI settings using video and graphs on a management screen in the cloud. In addition, the system can be live-streamed to local residents to keep them alert and informed.

In addition to the technology for determining water levels, the system incorporates two other key technologies:

EDGEMATRIX

NTT Com’s video analytics platform (video edge AI platform) processes high-volume video data in an Edge AI Box (edge computer), enabling rapid video analysis, water-level determination and streaming.

SmartMainTech

DOCOMO, as part of its SmartMainTech series of solutions for infrastructure maintenance, has developed an AI for determining water levels (joint patent pending for DOCOMO and NTT Comware), which combines DOCOMO’s AI technology and a video-analysis AI in Edge AI Box, to analyze video of rivers and reservoirs and link the results to the SmartMainTech cloud. The solution incorporates industry-specific AI, data-analysis and visualization technologies.

The system has many noteworthy features:

1. Use of virtual water-level gauges
– Low-cost virtual gauges make it practical to monitor even small rivers and reservoirs.
– Virtual gauges cannot be damaged by floods, etc., and are much easier to maintain than real gauges.
– Multiple virtual gauges can be installed for each camera to increase system accuracy.

2. Use of real-time video
– Rapid water level changes can be confirmed via real-time video.

3. Batch video and data monitoring
– Real-time video and water level graphs can be viewed on the same management screen.
– Notifications can be sent automatically via email or text if a specified water level is exceeded.

4. Easy integration with video services
– Video can be easily linked to video-distribution sites to keep nearby residents up to date.
– Edge AI Box performs video encoding in the field, enabling real-time video delivery.

Each company performed a specific role in the development of the system.

– DOCOMO: Developed the AI used in SmartMainTech
– NTT Com: Provided EDGEMATRIX service and cameras and Edge AI Box
– NTT Comware: Developed AI applications under the SmartMainTech brand

Through the trial, the three companies expect to confirm and optimize the system’s deployment and accuracy, with a view to launching it on a commercial basis for municipalities nationwide as soon as possible.

In recent years, river floods caused by typhoons and torrential rains have become more severe due to climate change, increasing the need to accurately ascertain water levels and take proper countermeasures quickly. However, the use of conventional physical water-level gauges is costly and labor-intensive in terms of installation and maintenance. Going forward, the NTT DOCOMO group’s low-cost, low-maintenance system is expected to expand the vital real-time monitoring of not only large bodies of water, but also small rivers and reservoirs that have the potential to cause disasters.

Japan – New NEURii Research Collaboration Between Eisai, Gates Ventures, Health Data Research UK, Lifearc and The University of Edinburgh to Develop Digital Solutions for Dementia is Announced

Eisai, Gates Ventures, Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), LifeArc and The University of Edinburgh announced today a new two-year collaborative research agreement. The collaboration, named NEURii is a unique pioneering partnership that creates a powerhouse collaboration of collective expertise in therapeutics, technology development and commercialization, health data management and advanced analytics/data science to predict, protect and promote brain health.

NEURii will focus its initial efforts to develop data and digital solutions to complement approved treatment options for patients and solve issues related to the prediction, prevention, management, and treatment of dementia related disorders.

This groundbreaking collaboration will use high-quality individual data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) to deliver patient-focused digital health solutions by developing initial pilot projects originated in highly recognized UK academic centres. These projects have been selected on the basis of their potential to make a meaningful difference to patients’ lives while maintaining data security and public trust. By combining diverse digital biomarkers that can be acquired non-invasively in real world clinical and non-clinical settings (e.g., speech from conversation) with the high-quality and abundant medical data accumulated in the UK, and analyzing them with tailored AI algorithms, NEURii will create innovative digital solutions. These will be deployed in the detection, monitoring and treatment of dementia patients in order to improve their lives as well as minimizing the impact of the disease burden on their carers and families.

This initial two-year pilot establishes a first-in-class launch pad underpinned by an innovative business model and scalable prototype for translating scientific prototypes that will enhance and improve public health demonstrating real world impact. It is envisaged that NEURii partners will explore further opportunities to scale up the program developing digital health solutions worldwide.

Dr. Teiji Kimura, Ph.D., Academia and Industry Alliance Officer, Deep Human Biology Learning (DHBL) Office of Eisai, commented, “Dementia is one of the major social and medical issues in an aging society, and Eisai’s mission is to contribute to solving these issues. We aim to create new digital solutions that will contribute to solving the challenges of dementia by combining the UK’s leadership in this field with our experience and track record of continuously creating innovative treatments in the field of dementia whilst staying true to our human health care concept of giving first thought to patients and the people in the daily living domain.”

It is estimated that more than 55 million are currently living with dementia in the world, and nearly one million people in the UK, and this number is expected to grow rapidly.1,2 As well as having a significant impact on the lives of patients and those who care for them (52% of the UK public knows someone who has been diagnosed with a form of dementia), these conditions place significant pressure on health and social care systems. Providing data-driven solutions that complement existing treatments could help to improve earlier detection and diagnosis, evidence-based treatment decision-making, monitoring of disease progression and maintenance of quality of life.

“AI and other advanced technologies are beginning to play a powerful role in medical research,” said Dr. Niranjan Bose, Managing Director of Health & Life Sciences at Gates Ventures. “I’m excited about how the NEURii collaboration will apply these tools to diagnostics research and drug discovery, and contribute to breakthroughs that can improve life for millions of people suffering with dementia and dementia-related illnesses.”

“Identifying ways to prevent dementia and neurodegenerative disease is a key part of our multi-million-pound neurodegeneration program,” said Paul Wright, MND Translational Challenge Lead at LifeArc “This collaboration is one of many new innovative projects we are involved in to improve the diagnosis of dementia and a positive step towards predicting those who may develop the disease.”

The UK is a leader in digital technology investment and research across areas such as genomics, health data science, AI and ML, with rich and diverse health-related data. NEURii’s model will enable the identification of pioneering data and digital science, the mentoring of talented scientists and the translation of health prototypes into practical and accessible products. By bringing together the expertise and capabilities of the NEURii collaborators, it is hoped that the novel approach will provide an exciting launch-pad for new transformational digital products that can contribute to solving the ongoing challenges of dementia and neurodegenerative conditions.

Professor Andrew Morris, Director of HDR UK, said: “Almost one million people in the UK are living with dementia. This new public-private partnership aims to gain a deeper understanding of the disease through trustworthy use of large datasets of anonymised health data in secure environments. We will take forward a set of pilot projects and engage with the public. Our aim is to produce new data-driven products that will benefit patients and their families in detecting dementia, predicting its progress and better managing the disease.”

NEURii academic lead Professor Siddharthan Chandran, of the University of Edinburgh, said: “The University of Edinburgh is delighted to be part of this ambitious cross-sector digital partnership that has, as an explicit goal, the creation of low cost and globally scalable digital tools to predict and monitor dementia.”

Outputs from the NEURii collaboration will be shared quarterly internally and released externally when appropriate.
