Iconic Rock Musical “Rent” to Hit the Stage at Penguin Point Productions

Oviedo-based community theater company, Good Vibes Theatre Co., will present the rock musical “Rent” from August 12 – 14 at Penguin Point Productions in the Oviedo Mall. The Good Vibes creative team and their cast of local talent aim to bring a fresh take to Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical.

“We’re excited to put our own spin on such an iconic piece of musical theater history, especially with a show that still feels so real and relevant in today’s climate,” said director Jamaal Solomon, who also plays the role of anarchist-philosopher, Tom Collins. “As a community theater group, our shows need to reflect both our community’s spirit and its diversity. We wanted to build an environment where people from all backgrounds feel seen and could come together to celebrate love and life.”

Set in the East Village of New York City during the height of the AIDS crisis, “Rent” is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “Rent” has become a cultural phenomenon, with a story that still resonates as strongly with audiences today as it did over 25 years ago, when its Broadway debut introduced the world to a new kind of musical — one that was modern, real and raw.

“Discrimination, and the atomization brought about by capitalism, can have painful and heartbreaking impacts on the lives of good people, and I think ‘Rent’ shows us that in a very honest and beautiful way,” said actor Alex Storer, who plays troubled filmmaker Mark Cohen. “Mark is a dream role for me because I strongly relate to his internal conflict between his desire for stability and security and his need to express and create. I’m excited to bring my personal experience with that conflict to the role.”

Actor Zach Smith, who plays Roger Davis — an HIV-positive rock musician attempting to write one perfect song before his time is up — also finds a personal connection to his character through the show’s rock-n-roll score.

“When I first started out in the theater community, I was drawn to ‘Rent’ because it was the first time I’d heard a musical with a ‘rock opera’ vibe,” said Smith. He says that Roger’s musical aspirations resonate with his own from years ago. “My buddies and I once tried forming a band playing out of one of our parents’ garages for the neighborhood kids. Trying to make a name for ourselves and write that ‘One Great Song’ — to no avail, of course. We were just kids after all, but it’s a memory I will cherish forever. As someone who grew up listening to a lot of classic and alternative rock music, this show was right up my alley.”

Alongside Solomon, Storer and Smith, the cast of “Rent” includes Iris M. Johnson (Mimi Marquez), Aubrey Gore (Maureen Johnson), Natalia Medina (Joanne Jefferson), Cesar Montenegro (Angel Dumott Schunard), Jacob Eaddy (Benjamin Coffin III) and a multi-talented ensemble featuring Hailey Marquez, Rubin Orellano, Xavier Crawford, Rebecca DeJesus, Nate Hernandez, Rachel Geib, Alyssa Perez and Paul Pelletier, Jr.

“Rent” is presented through special arrangements with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

Vice President calls for equitable opportunities to quality education for every student

The Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu today called for equitable opportunities to quality education for every student. Shri Naidu emphasised that no student should be left behind because he or she is unable to afford their course books or tuition fees. “We must ensure that all barriers to equal access to education are dismantled,” he added.

Speaking at the inaugural of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Rajasthan Youth Association, Shri Naidu described education as the most powerful agent of change which can lend an impetus to the pace of development of the nation.

Shri Naidu observed that there is a huge potential for India to become a world leader in various domains given the demographic advantage and the presence of highly talented youth. He said that the need of the hour is to impart quality education and to convert the vast pool of educated manpower into a highly skilled workforce in tune with the requirements of the digitally-driven, knowledge-based 21st century. “Harnessed to their full potential, the talent and creative energies of our young minds will power India into the league of the strongest nations,” he added.

Recalling the great values of Indian culture, Shri Naidu said, “It is the duty of every Indian, who has achieved success, fame and wealth in life, to give back to society and the country.” He said that it is not the responsibility of the government alone to work towards nation building; all citizens must proactively come forward and do their bit for the welfare of the fellow citizens.

Reminding people to be kind to everyone, Shri Naidu urged all to treat everyone with compassion and help those in need. “As we take rapid steps to success, let us not leave any of our brothers and sisters behind, but seek to empower them in every way possible,” he added. Recalling India’s past glory, he called upon everyone to work for making the nation great again.

Asking everyone to respect their mother tongue, the Vice President wanted the parents to talk in mother tongue with their children at home. Advising the youngsters who aspire to go abroad, he said that they should ‘learn, earn and return’ to serve the motherland. “You should return to your matribhumi to serve the society and to spend time with your parents and grandparents,” he stressed.

Shri Naidu lauded Rajasthan Youth Association, one of the oldest organisations of the Rajasthani community settled in Chennai, for its efforts towards the cause of education by making course books available to college students in need free of cost, under its ‘RYA Book Bank Project’. Shri Naidu expressed his happiness over several other initiatives undertaken by the Rajasthan Youth Association in areas such as healthcare and food security, among others. “We as a community must live up to our ancient philosophy of ‘share and care’ and Rajasthan Youth Association is a good role model,” he added.

Recognizing that in a vast country like India, everything can not be left to the governments alone, Shri Naidu urged the social service organizations and philanthropists to supplement governments’ efforts in the fields of health and education. “Social service gives you joy and serving the poor is serving the God,” he added.

Shri P.K. Sekar Babu, Tamil Nadu Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Shri Dinesh Mehta, President, Rajasthan Youth Association, Shri Ashish Jain, Secretary, Rajasthan Youth Association, Shri V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras and other dignitaries graced the occasion.
