L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards 2022

An exceptional ceremony to celebrate outstanding women scientists 15 international laureates and 30 rising talents

Paris – WEBWIRE

On June 23rd, the Fondation L’Oréal and UNESCO will be celebrating 45 eminent women scientists from over 35 countries and all regions of the world at an unprecedented For Women in Science International Awards Ceremony being held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The past three years have been some of the most challenging for science in recent history. Women have been on the frontlines, addressing unparalleled issues related to climate change, disease, and health crises like the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite being essential to tackle today’s emergencies, female scientists are not yet sufficiently visible and numerous.

PARIS, INTERNATIONAL RALLYING POINT FOR FEMALE SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE

Starting on June 20th, the entire week will be dedicated to making Paris a rallying point for some of the world’s top scientific minds. A series of events will create interactions between these outstanding women scientists, including an Extraordinary Lecture at the Academy of Sciences and networking events, leading up to the Awards Ceremony at UNESCO on June 23rd.

In this special Ceremony gathering the laureates from the past three editions, 15 exceptional researchers will receive the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards in recognition of their outstanding scientific achievements in recent years, along with 30 young female scientists, selected in 2020 and 2022, who will earn the title of International Rising Talents.

COUNTERING THE SIDELINING OF WOMEN SCIENTISTS

According to UNESCO recent data, the number of women pursuing scientific careers is increasing slightly, only one in three researchers is a woman globally1. In the research world, the glass ceiling persists: just 14%2 of senior academic positions in Europe are held by women and just 4% of the Nobel prizes in science have been awarded to women.

Alexandra Palt, L’Oréal Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer and CEO of the Fondation L’Oréal, said: “During the COVID-19 pandemic we have seen how women scientists are essential to respond to existential threats to our health, to society, to the planet. But still they are invisibilized and often face tremendous obstacles during their careers and research studies. This situation is the result of systemic barriers, unconscious bias, self-censorship but also discrimination. This is not just a problem for women: this is a problem for research. To be relevant, research has to be inclusive and needs all its talents to be mobilized.”

According to Shamila Nair-Bedouelle, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences of UNESCO: “Many of the rising female talents being celebrated this year are excelling in fields that will be vital to decarbonizing our future, such as energy storage systems, hydrogen fuel systems and quantum optics, a field of study which is paving the way for more energy-efficient computers. Yet many of their peers working in similarly strategic fields are not getting the recognition that they deserve. UNESCO, as the UN agency in charge of science, which has made gender equality a priority, is determined to act to put an end to these inequalities. The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science partnership is a relevant example of positive action in this field, giving a voice and visibility to women scientists and to their achievements to meet the challenges of our century”.

Since its inception in 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program has honored and supported 3,900 women scientists. It continues to lobby for these women to receive the recognition that they deserve. These brilliant female researchers have contributed significantly to their respective scientific fields and to finding effective solutions to some of the most pressing and urgent challenges that we face as a global society. This year’s celebration will be a way to acclaim them for their life’s work and the many obstacles they have overcome.

ABOUT THE FONDATION L’ORÉAL

The Fondation L’Oréal supports and empowers women to shape their future and make a difference in society, focusing on three major areas: scientific research and inclusive beauty and climate action.

Since 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program has worked to empower more women scientists to overcome barriers to progression and participate in solving the great challenges of our time, for the benefit of all. For 24 years, it has supported more than 3,900 women researchers from over 110 countries, rewarding scientific excellence and inspiring younger generations of women to pursue science as a career.

Convinced that beauty contributes to the process of rebuilding lives, the Fondation L’Oréal helps vulnerable women to improve their self-esteem through free beauty and wellness treatments. It also enables underprivileged women to gain access to employment with dedicated vocational beauty training. On average, around 21,000 people have access to these free treatments every year and more than 27,000 people have taken part in professional beauty training, since the beginning of the program.

Finally, women are affected by persistent gender-based discrimination and inequalities, exacerbated by climate change. While they are on the frontline of the crisis, they remain under-represented in climate decision-making. The Women and Climate program of the Fondation L’Oréal supports, in particular, women who are developing climate action projects addressing the urgent climate crisis and raises awareness of the importance of gender-sensitive climate solutions.

Women Palante’s Second Dance-a-Thon Fundraiser: Helping Women Entrepreneurs Step Up Their Path to Success

The second annual Women Palante’s Dance-A-Thon fundraiser will once again rock the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart on Sunday, May 15, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

This time the Dance-A-Thon will add more rhythms to the mix, with expert dance instructors, food stalls, food trucks, a fun photo booth as well as a prize raffle from local sponsors.

The event is planning to raise over $7,000 to support the Women Palante’s programs of care, education and advocacy for Latina women entrepreneurs.

“This year, we are joining forces with local companies and organizations such as Sport&Health, Ignite, Arepazone, Kofemi Grub n’Go, among others, and co-organizing with the Amigas Group of Stone Ridge to raise money for our programs,” Yurani Sandoval, Women Palante’s CEO and Founder, mentioned, “the Dance-A-Thon is a great way to bring people together, have a fantastic time, and fundraise for vulnerable Latina women.”

“The power of the Dance-A-Thon is about creating awareness too,” Sandoval added, “Latina women are underrepresented and they lack the right tools to become entrepreneurs; this fundraiser gives women —especially single moms— a chance to launch their businesses, improve the ones they already have and get their feet off the ground,” Sandoval concluded.

Women Palante’s distinctiveness is to bring a wellness component into their business-related-programs, so women can have more confidence, improve their self-esteem and be able to thrive and succeed.

To register to the Dance-A-Thon go to Women Palante’s Eventbrite page: www.eventbrite.com/e/dance-a-thon-2022-tickets-243159977037

For each ticket sold you will earn a ticket for the raffle which has amazing prizes. You’ll also be making a difference on your community.

Women of Venusverse “Genesis” Collection with NFT Validation by UREEQA now available on Opensea

Venusverse, an organization designed to give women insight into the world of Web3, announces the launch of a ground-breaking new NFT collection that will be protected by UREEQA, a leading digital validation company that helps creators protect, manage and monetize creative work.
The Women of Venusverse “Genesis” Collection of 2,022 NFTs is a one-of-a-kind art collection with membership access to the Venusverse community.

Ten percent of revenue from the collection will be donated to the CivicAction Leadership Foundation in support of women in that organization’s leadership programs, including the DiverseCity Fellows and the Emerging Leaders Network.

The “Genesis” Collection launched on April 19 on the Opensea.io marketplace.

“2,022” is somewhat of a representation of the number six (2+2+2), which is said to be the number of unconditional love and selflessness. Venus (named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty) is the sixth planet in the solar system in terms of size and mass. And the 0 comes in because the stars aligned considering Venusverse launched as a company in 2022.

According to Venusverse CEO and co-founder, Janelle Chalouhi, the beautiful, eclectic and diverse 2,022 art pieces “represent women from across the world, bringing us all together under one collection.”

Chalouhi described to Ontario-based digital artist and designer Fatima Gharaibeh her vision behind representing diversity among women from across the world as well as the properties and layers she wanted to include in the collection and Gharaibeh brought the vision to life in a beautiful way. That is how the first 114 NFTs were first created, 104 of which are animated. The properties were then used to generate the remaining 1,908 NFTs through generative art.

“To me this was a nod to the new digital era we have entered into, where we use tech to enhance the work we do and hopefully to do good,” Chalouhi said.

Collectors who buy into the Genesis Collection of 2,022 NFTs will gain membership access to the Venusverse community, and they’ll also be granted peace of mind thanks to UREEQA.

THEMUSEUM’s CEO, David Marskell, introduced the two startups and asked both CEOs to serve on a recent panel with Museums Canada. It’s only fitting that THEMUSEUM will be hosting the Women of Venusverse launch event in May at their Voodoo Lounge followed by an exhibit.

The next step for Venusverse was to protect the collection, and that’s where UREEQA came in. The entire collection will be validated by UREEQA’s Responsible Minting(TM) technology, with the platform’s Package of Proof(TM) giving buyers the critical assurance that what they’re purchasing is the real deal.

“Since I decided to go this route, I knew that the provenance and the authenticity of the collection was so important, especially given the amount of scams that are happening right now,” Chalouhi said. “I needed the collection to essentially have a digital signature, which is why we’ve partnered with UREEQA to validate and authenticate the art, and to make the collection even more exclusive.”

“Not only is this UREEQA’s first opportunity to validate an entire NFT collection, but it also represents a chance for us to team up with a platform that shares similar values,” UREEQA CEO Kirk Fergusson said. “Both UREEQA and Venusverse are focused on launching and supporting art that is honest and authentic, and the best way to provide that assurance to a buyer is by having the work validated. We are thrilled to provide that for the 2,022 collection.”

A global network of validators will use UREEQA’s platform and technology to analyze the authenticity of the full collection. At the end of the validation process, a Package of Proof will be generated which documents all the steps taken by UREEQA and its validation team to verify the authenticity of the work. The key information is made available on a provenance page, which is contained in the Venusverse website, providing an easy-to-use resource for prospective NFT buyers to verify the authenticity of a creation of interest.

And because key information about the creative work’s authenticity is stored in a record on the blockchain, drop-day purchasers and those who buy the validated work on resale can be assured that they’re getting the legit product, no matter when or where they’re jumping in.

About UREEQA

Established in Canada in 2020, UREEQA is modernizing the inefficient and bureaucratic systems currently in place for copyright protection. By building a robust and compelling Package of Proof(TM) for source creative work, UREEQA only mints Validated NFTs to represent creative rights. This helps keep buyers safe by giving them confidence that the work they are purchasing was minted by the smart contract approved by the creator of the work and is therefore authentic.

The UREEQA platform strives to protect creators’ work, their rights and their revenue by harnessing the power of blockchain technology. UREEQA provides value and opportunities for its creators, validators and token holders via URQA, the token at the heart of the UREEQA ecosystem.
