     Correctional officers stopped a female person in custody committing self-harm in Lo Wu Correctional Institution today (November 2).

     At 9.43am today, the 41-year-old female person in custody was found emotionally unstable, banging her head against the grille gate inside a dayroom. Officers at the scene immediately stopped her and called for reinforcement. The person in custody was found conscious. She was required to be sent to a public hospital for further treatment after receiving examination and treatment by the institution Medical Officer.

     A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up on the case.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, “The department uses all possible measures to prevent persons in custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institutional facilities, staff training and first aid services.”

     The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of false statements in October 2021.

     ​Correctional officers stopped a person in custody assaulting another person in custody at Pak Sha Wan Correctional Institution today (August 7).

     At 10.03am today, a 28-year-old male person in custody attacked another 60-year-old male person in custody inside a workshop. Officers at the scene immediately stopped the assailant and called for reinforcement.

     During the incident, the victim sustained injuries to his hand, shoulder, etc. After examination and treatment by the institution Medical Officer, he was referred to a public hospital for further treatment. The assailant sustained injury to his hand. After treatment provided by the institution Medical Officer, he did not need to be sent to a public hospital. 

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     The two persons in custody were sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.

     Correctional officers at Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution stopped a fight among detainees today (July 3).

     At 9.54am today, four detainees aged between 28 and 45 engaged in a fight inside a dayroom. Officers immediately stopped the fight. OC foam was used to subdue the detainees after warnings were given in vain.

     During the incident, three detainees sustained injuries to their hands, face, neck, etc. respectively. They did not need to be sent to a public hospital after receiving medical examination and treatment provided by the institution Medical Officer. Another detainee did not sustain any injury.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     The four detainees are detained under the Immigration Ordinance.

     The institution management of Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution today (June 20) launched an operation to combat illicit activities of detainees.

     The management of the institution received intelligence recently that individual detainees in the institution have attempted to build up forces to act against the management. The management then conducted monitoring of the target detainee. At 7.50 am today, the target detainee, using an excuse about the arrangement of broadcast of TV programmes, openly provoked the officers. The correctional officers immediately took disciplinary action against him. After that, 23 detainees staged a hunger strike during breakfast trying to show their support for the target detainee and demanded for his release. Following assessment, the Correctional Services Department (CSD) immediately deployed a Regional Response Team to the institution for back-up of the management. The present situation in the institution is stable. The CSD will continue to closely monitor the situation and the activities of the detainees concerned.

     The CSD spares no efforts in ensuring a safe and secure custodial environment, and will take every measure to combat any form of illegal activities in the institution.

     Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution is a minimum security detention centre for the detention of male adult detainees under the Immigration Ordinance.

     Correctional officers at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (June 14) intercepted a male remand person in custody smuggling suspected dangerous drugs into the centre by concealing them inside his body.

     The 55-year-old remand person in custody was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug on June 10. After undergoing X-ray body scanning, he was suspected to have swallowed dangerous drugs before admission. He was therefore separated and put under close monitoring.

     By 6.25pm today, he had discharged seven pellets of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic sheet. The case has been reported to the Police for follow-up.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, “The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline and a drug-free environment for all persons in custody.”
