     A correctional officer stopped a detainee assaulting another detainee at Nei Kwu Correctional Institution today (April 3).

     At 1.42pm today, a 47-year-old female detainee attacked a 33-year-old female detainee with a plastic stool inside a dayroom. The officer at the scene immediately stopped the assailant and called for reinforcement.

     During the incident, the victim sustained injury to her head. After examination and treatment by the institution Medical Officer, she was referred to a public hospital for further treatment. The assailant did not sustain any injuries.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     The two detainees were detained in Nei Kwu Correctional Institution under the Immigration Ordinance in January 2024.

     ​Correctional officers stopped a male person in custody attempting escape at Tai Lam Correctional Institution today (March 17).

     At 1.13pm today, a 29-year-old male person in custody suddenly climbed up a fence while taking a rest at an outdoor activities area and attempted to escape. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him and called for reinforcement. The officers and the person in custody did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment of 10 months and 14 days for the offences of possession of dangerous drug and theft in November 2023.

     ​The Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (February 15) launched an operation at Tai Lam Correctional Institution to combat illicit activities.

     The management of Tai Lam Correctional Institution stepped up measures to combat illicit food transaction activities among persons in custody during Lunar New Year and continued to closely monitor relevant target persons in custody.

     At 8.24am today, two persons in custody were found involved in illicit food transaction activities in the dining hall of the institution. Correctional officers immediately took disciplinary action against them. During the incident, six persons in custody in the dining hall expressed support and acted collectively against the institution management, attempting to exert pressure on the institution management to withdraw all disciplinary actions. Officers at the scene immediately removed them from the dining hall for separate investigation. 

     Intelligence also revealed that there were other persons in custody intended to advocate for the persons in custody involved in the incident with the aim to worsen the situation. Following an assessment and detailed planning, the CSD deployed reinforcements to Tai Lam Correctional Institution, including members of the Regional Response Team, the Security Unit, the Dog Unit and other reinforcing members, to conduct a special searching operation on the target persons. Later, 11 other persons in custody who were suspected of involving in the aforementioned activities and possession of unauthorised articles were removed from associating with others for investigation. The CSD will continue to closely monitor the development. 

     In order to assist persons in custody to rehabilitate in a safe and orderly environment, the CSD spares no effort in combating illicit activities of all kinds in its institutions.

     Tai Lam Correctional Institution is a minimum security institution for the detention of male adult convicted persons in custody.

Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drug into Tai Lam Centre for Women

     Correctional officers at Tai Lam Centre for Women today (November 30) intercepted a female remand person in custody smuggling a suspected dangerous drug into the centre by concealing it inside her body.

     The 45-year-old person in custody was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug on November 28. After undergoing X-ray body scanning, she was suspected to have swallowed the dangerous drug before admission. She was therefore separated and put under close monitoring.

     At 3.02pm today, she discharged one pack of the suspected dangerous drug with a weight of about 18 grams wrapped in a plastic sheet. The case has been reported to the Police for follow-up.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, “The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline, and a drug-free environment for all persons in custody.”

      Correctional officers at Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre stopped a male person in custody attacking a staff member today (November 19).

     At 7.01pm today, a 31-year-old male person in custody suddenly became emotional and attacked a correctional officer inside a cell. Officers at the scene immediately stopped the assailant and applied OC foam to subdue him after repeated warnings were ignored.

     During the incident, the officer sustained injuries to his head. After examination and treatment at the institution hospital, he was referred to a public hospital for further treatment. The assailant did not sustain any injuries.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     The assailant was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of murder in February 2023.
