APEC and Airbnb: Supporting economic opportunity through travel dispersal

Airbnb plans to invest nearly $5 million to help new communities across the APEC member economies reap the benefits of tourism.

WEBWIRE

To mark the opening of the APEC Summit in San Francisco, Airbnb today released a report highlighting how Airbnb is contributing to APECs goals to promote cross-border travel in its member economies and expand economic opportunity to more people in more destinations.

In 2023 and 2024, Airbnb plans to invest nearly $5 million to help new communities across the APEC member economies reap the benefits of tourism by partnering with organizations committed to heritage preservation, growing our Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy to make it easier for more people to participate in the tourism economy, and supporting organizations that economically empower local communities. These investments include a new MOU in the Philippines to promote womens entrepreneurship in tourism, and growing our tourism economic empowerment initiatives for women across APEC member economies, including capacity building and training in Mexico.

As global tourism recovers from the pandemic, these programs will help open economic opportunities to more communities that have not traditionally benefited from tourism.

The economic benefits of more dispersed, sustainable travel

The pandemic spurred changes in travel habits domestic travel and extended rural stays helped disperse the economic benefits of tourism to communities that traditionally have not benefited from this activity. Many of these travel trends have endured in the first nine months of 2023 more than 1,100 cities in APEC member economies welcomed their first guest via Airbnb.

Travel on Airbnb continues to be an key economic pathway for communities in APEC member economies. In 2022 alone:

  • Hosts welcomed nearly 150 million Airbnb guest arrivals
  • Hosts earned nearly $30 billion in supplemental income
  • More than 450,000 people started hosting their home on Airbnb

In Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand, the number of nights booked on Airbnb doubled year-over-year in 2023. This activity has helped generate more than $125 billion in economic activity in 17 APEC member economiesincluding $70+ billion in labor incomeand helped support an estimated 2 million jobs.

Investments to promote more sustainable, dispersed travel

Within the Asia-Pacific region non-urban tourism spending on Airbnb in 2022* grew approximately 88 percent from 2019 according to a report compiled by Oxford Economics, enabling a valuable economic contribution to rural and regional areas. To help more communities benefit from changing travel trends, Airbnb will continue to invest in partnerships and innovations to Airbnbs products to help encourage travel to more rural areas and highlight local heritage.

These new commitments build on existing work. In 2022, we launched our Historical Homes Category which now includes listings in more than 30 countries and regions, and categories such as Ryokan, Hanok, Kominka and Minsu. In addition, weve developed partnerships with UNESCO and other heritage organizations in Australia, Japan, Mexico, and elsewhere to help disperse the benefits of tourism to rural areas. This year, we also expanded the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy to introduce more individuals from diverse and underrepresented communities to hosting on the Airbnb platform in coordination with local organizations.

We look forward to continuing our efforts to help more communities benefit from travel to help foster connection, boost sustainable travel, and promote economic growth.

About AirbnbAirbnb was born in 2007 when two Hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 4 million Hosts who have welcomed over 1.5 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, Hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.

Japan – TMF Starts Supporting the Sustainable Expansion of “Good Driver Lessons” that Leverage Knowledge and Skills Developed Through Motorsports for Safe Driving

The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) has started supporting the sustainable expansion of Good Driver Lesson (GDL), a Sapporo-based non-profit contributing to the prevention of traffic accidents through safe driving lessons conducted by professional drivers.

GDL Website: https://gooddriver.jp/

With the percentage of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers increasing in recent years, many regions are seeking to further expand traffic safety measures. Against this backdrop, GDL was established in 2019 based on professional drivers wanting to give back to communities that have provided significant cooperation with hosting rally competitions. In 2022, nine lessons were held nationwide in conjunction with such rallies.

The lessons are hands-on experiences where participants learn about their own driving skills and physical condition, as well as car safety technologies. Highly positive feedback has been received from participants to date, especially from elderly drivers, as the lessons are a fun way to raise their awareness related to safe driving. Also, in addition to continuing the program in regions where it has already been held, GDL is receiving many requests from people in other areas who have observed the event to conduct the lessons in their respective regions.

Accordingly, this year, the frequency of lessons will be increased beyond holding them in conjunction with rally competitions, with additional lessons held in conjunction with the 2023 Spring National Traffic Safety Campaign (May 11-20). Some sessions will be split into morning and afternoon lessons to provide opportunities for more people to participate.

– Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture: May 11
– Akitakata City, Hiroshima Prefecture: May 13
– Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture: May 16

In the future, the aim is to transition from a format where GDL is the organizer to one where local businesses and organizations conduct the lessons independently. With concerned parties continuing to make improvements toward ensuring the activities are sustainable, the plan calls for local car dealers and related manufacturers in each area to take the lead and work with local government agencies and police to reduce operating costs while maintaining the lessons’ entertaining aspects and the learning quality. TMF will utilize its know-how to support GDL in creating such a structure.

Since its founding, the Toyota Motor Corporation has conducted its business activities with the aim of creating a prosperous society through automobiles while respecting all stakeholders, including customers, business partners, employees, and the local communities in which it operates. Accordingly, TMF was established in August 2014 to conduct activities that benefit the public good.

Aiming to realize a mobility society in which everyone can move about freely, TMF is working to solve mobility issues around the world through a diverse range of projects. Going forward, the Toyota Group, working in cooperation with various partners and utilizing the technologies and knowhow it has cultivated through its business activities, will continue to promote undertakings that are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while contributing to the realization of a society where people can lead rich and fulfilling lives.

Canada – Supporting Growth and Resilience in PEI’s Agri-Food Sector

New food scale-up facility and PEI Potato Industry Market Diversification and Recovery Plan will help producers and agri-food businesses expand and diversify markets

March 11, 2022 · Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Prince Edward Island is home to a strong and vibrant food economy, built on the Island’s natural resources and an innovative value-added food manufacturing sector. As market and consumer demands evolve, PEI’s agri-food industry continues to adapt and grow through increased automation, strategic collaboration, and market diversification. The Government of Canada is taking steps to ensure farmers and agri-food businesses are ready to expand and diversify by investing in facilities and infrastructure they need to compete on the world stage.

Strengthening the food innovation ecosystem and the PEI potato sector

Today, Heath MacDonald, Member of Parliament for Malpeque, announced a federal investment of $2.7 million for two projects to support recovery and growth in PEI’s food ecosystem. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA.

The Government of Canada is contributing $2 million through Canada’s Jobs and Growth Fund to Central Property Management Inc. (CPM) to transform an existing building in Borden-Carleton into a multi-tenant, food scale-up facility certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), called Food Works. This new incubator space will strengthen the innovation ecosystem in PEI, create new jobs and be a catalyst for growth in the food sector.

A further contribution of $700,000 through ACOA’s Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) program will support the PEI Potato Industry Market Diversification and Recovery Plan. The investment will bring together PEI’s Food Island Partnership and the PEI Potato Board to strengthen the PEI potato brand while focusing on product safety and quality. The plan will also support market diversification to reach new markets.

Today’s announcement demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to the food industry in Atlantic Canada, supporting growth and job opportunities in rural communities, and working with innovative Atlantic Canadian organizations to boost Canada’s global competitiveness.
