History:

The Republic of Guatemala is a Central American country which historically formed the core of the Maya civilization, one of the most sophisticated and highly developed societies in the history of the Americas and the entire world. After being subjugated to Spanish rule, Guatemala gained independence in 1821 and became an independent republic in 1821.         A decades-long civil war that began in the 1950s provided the impetus for generations of Guatemalans to seek a better life abroad, often in Florida, Texas, and California.

Metro Los Angeles is home to one of the largest Guatemalan populations outside of Guatemala. Communities with substantial numbers of Guatemalans include the cities of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Hawthorne, Palmdale, Inglewood, Paramount and the unincorporated communities of Lennox and Val Verde.

Metro Los Angeles is also home to several notable Guatemalans, including the prominent street artist Mauricio “Cache” Reyes, as well as a plethora of Guatemalan restaurants serving up delicious traditional dishes.

Chapín is a word that many Guatemalans use to describe their ethnicity with pride, and the history of the word chapín dates back to the 15th century. Chapines were a type of platform that was popular in Spain. The footwear for which the Guatemalan nickname gained its name eventually disappeared and at present the name is very popular and is used as an adjective for a person who comes from Guatemala.

2023 Inditex Annual General Meeting

WEBWIRE

/ Inditexs shareholders approved the 2022 financial statements and the distribution of a 1.20 per-share dividend this year at Annual General Meeting. They also ratified setting the number of directors at ten and the re-election of Amancio Ortega Gaona as proprietary director and of Jos Luis Durn Schulz as independent director.

/ Inditexs chairperson, Marta Ortega Prez, emphasised that the magic of Inditex lies with our team and values, heavily influenced by self-imposed high standards. The future is not predetermined and we must never forget that.

/ Inditexs CEO, scar Garca Maceiras, noted during his evaluation of the last year that we have made our company stronger, more efficient and ready to tackle new challenges and achieve profitable and solid growth in very demanding environments.

/ scar Garca Maceiras also announced the Groups new sustainability targets, thanks to which 100% of the textile fibres used by Inditex by 2030 will deliver a lower impact on the environment by using materials created through technological innovation, recycled textiles and raw materials grown using organic and regenerative farming practices.

/ Moreover, Inditex plans to cut emissions along its value chain by 50% in 2030 (on the path to attaining net zero emissions by 2040), expand its circularity projects and pursue new biodiversity initiatives which will recover and regenerate at least five million hectares in different parts of the world.

Inditexs shareholders approved the companys 2022 financial statements and a total dividend of 1.20 per share at its Annual General Meeting at its headquarters in Arteixo. They also ratified motions to establish the number of directors at ten and to re-elect of Amancio Ortega Gaona as proprietary director and Jos Luis Durn Schulz as independent director.

In her speech to the companys shareholders today, Inditexs chairperson, Marta Ortega Prez, said that the results achieved in 2022 and early 2023 are the result of the incredible work done day after day by our teams, by each of the professionals comprising this company, also emphasising the importance of the Groups shared values: The magic of Inditex lies with our team and values, heavily influenced by self-imposed high standards. The future is not predetermined and we must never forget that. She went on to add that: These values mean that despite our huge size we are close-knit like a family. Successes are celebrated together but mistakes are taken on board as if they were ones own. That is the strength behind the trajectory of each of our brands and what fuels their growth potential.

Inditexs CEO, scar Garca Maceiras, reviewed the companys performance in 2022 and the first quarter of this year: we have made our company stronger, more efficient and ready to tackle new challenges and achieve profitable and solid growth in very demanding environments.

He also referred to forward-looking projects, noting: We benefit from the financial strength needed to drive new investments in order to lay the foundations for continued growth, pursue new projects and improve our product proposition across all markets, channels and chains. We are emboldened. But we will stick with the continuous improvement path that has always characterised this company, never straying from its essence.

Importantly, he unveiled the Groups new sustainability targets, referring to them as extremely ambitious, albeit just another step in the work the company has been doing for many years now.

New steps towards a more sustainable model

Innovation and collaboration are the cornerstones of the new targets set with the aim of advancing towards an increasingly sustainable value chain. More specifically, the Group has established the following four priority initiatives:

/ Lower-impact Fibres: by 2030, Inditex will only use textile materials that deliver a lower impact on the environment: around 40% of the fibres used by the Inditex brands will come from conventional recycling processes; roughly 25% will be next-generation fibres (some of which will be scaled up in partnership with start-ups identified through the Inditex Sustainability Innovation Hub); and 25% will hail from organic or regenerative farming practices.

/ Supply chain transformation: fuelling social and environmental transformation across our supply chain. Social transformation will stem from our Workers at the Centre strategy, and our Environmental Transformation Programme centres around water, discharges, chemical product management and energy.

/ Biodiversity: Supporting projects for the protection, restoration or regeneration of up to 5 million hectares, so helping to upgrade their biodiversity.

/ Continuing to extend circularity initiatives such as Zara Pre-Owned.

These and other initiatives, will enable Inditex to reduce its emissions by over 50% in 2030, on its path to achieving net zero emissions in 2040, with reduction of at least 90%.

Annual July 4 Public Reading of Frederick Douglass Speech at Inkwell Beach on Martha’s Vineyard Hosted by Renaissance House Retreat for Writers & Artists

Renaissance House Retreat for Writers & Artists invites the public and volunteer readers to participate in the 17th annual free dramatic reading of Frederick Douglass’ powerful speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” on July 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Martha’s Vineyard’s historic Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs.

Volunteer readers are requested to arrive by 10:30 a.m. The reading performance begins at 11:00 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Martha’s Vineyard Community Television (MVTV) will tape the presentation for a special broadcast on July 4th evening.

Readers of all ages are invited to help bring the words of Frederick Douglass to life. Each volunteer reader will recite different sections of the 10,000-plus word address Douglass wrote during American slavery in 1852. Although it’s been 171 years since Frederick Douglass delivered his Fourth of July speech at a convention in Rochester, New York, the message is especially resonating during today’s turbulent political era.

The director-editor-producer of Renaissance House’s annual Frederick Douglass speech is Makani Themba, a writer and social justice innovator in the field of change communications and narrative strategy.

“Douglass spoke these truths to power more than 170 years ago and it is still incredibly fresh,” said Themba. “It’s this masterful articulation of the intersections between structural racism, culture, individual choice, and the inherent violence in systems that place profit over people. I think that’s why this speech continues to engage us generation after generation.

Lifelong Martha’s Vineyard summer resident, Abigail McGrath, the founder of Renaissance House Retreat for Writers & Artists, created this community reading on the beach to celebrate the continuing impact of Frederick Douglass. “By reading Frederick Douglass’ powerful speech at Inkwell Beach, a historically Black swimming area, the emotions and not-so-hidden agenda resonates with a powerful punch. Having it read by the people in the community heightens the relevancy even more,” said McGrath. “Renaissance House is pleased to partner with Martha’s Vineyard Community Television to bring this important, historic speech to television viewers.”

Volunteer readers are requested to arrive by 10:30a.m. The reading begins at 11:00a.m. The public is invited to attend the performance. For more on the Frederick Douglass reading on July 4, please call Renaissance House at 917-747-0367 or email renaissancehse@ aol.com.

About Renaissance House Retreat for Writers and Artists

Renaissance House is a nonprofit writers and artists retreat sponsored by the Helene Johnson and Dorothy West Foundation, which was founded in 2000 by Abigail McGrath, an author, playwright and filmmaker. It was inspired by Dorothy West, the author of the award-winning novel and film The Wedding, and her poet cousin Helene Johnson (McGrath’s mother) who were acclaimed writers during the Harlem Renaissance. McGrath was the inspiration for the novel The Wedding. Renaissance House provides writers and other artists with a subsidized retreat away from life’s responsibilities and the space in which to create new works of art. It is one of the few retreats designed for issue-oriented writers, writers of color and writers of social justice.
