The Fletcher School at Tufts University to Extensively Focus on Sustainable Business Education in Fall 2023

The Fletcher School, the graduate school of global affairs at Tufts University, Massachusetts is now upgrading its popular Master of International Business (MIB) degree course to address the evolving requirements of both employers and students.

The comprehensive two-year residential master’s degree program will include an optional STEM-designated quantitative methods track in fall 2023 and will also focus on sustainable business training. The STEM track will serve as a rewarding opportunity for students pursuing a career in finance, data analytics, economics, consulting, and technology as well as for international graduates with global work experiences who wish to study and work in the United States.

Moreover, MIB graduates from outside the United States who pursue this track will garner the opportunity to qualify for an extra two-year STEM extension of their Post-Completion OPT work permission.

Holistically incorporating the paradigms of sustainability—Environment, Social, and Governance, the course has been meticulously framed to enable students to evolve as the change agents of tomorrow.

“Today’s challenges from inequality to climate change demand the private sector, government and civil society working together to deliver solutions,” said Rachel Kyte, Dean at The Fletcher School. “Tomorrow’s leaders need strong business skills paired with a global, situational understanding, which they gain from studying international business at a global affairs school.”

Some of the salient features of the MIB degree course include-:

  • A two-year residential programme on Fletcher’s Boston-area campus
  • An international cohort of classmates and alumni
  • Two to five years of business experience preferred
  • No GRE/GMAT requirement
“The MIB program prepares the business and policy leaders the world sorely needs,” said Bhaskar Chakravorti, Dean of Global Business at The Fletcher School. “Our graduates understand the drivers of and barriers to sustainable development and can bring together the tools of finance, consulting, entrepreneurship, policy and the law to solve problems and make the buzz around ESG a real thing. With a brand-new STEM track, the MIB degree will open doors for students from across the globe to pursue jobs and practical training in the U.S. while bringing data and technology to bear to make management decisions that sustain businesses while sustaining the planet and building equitable societies.’’

Counsellors Retreat 2022 at Indian School of Hospitality

The annual Counsellors Retreat brought together counsellors from the most prestigious schools across the country. Over a hundred counsellors visited the ISH campus, engaged with students, and experienced ISH through exciting workshops. They interacted with the faculty and listened to our founders, facilitators and admissions team share their vision for the future of education.

The two-day event saw counsellors indulge in an exquisite meal during the gala dinner and participate in a few workshops on campus. The event allowed them to explore life as an undergraduate student and learn more about the global pathways offered in alliance with Les Roches Switzerland and École Ducasse France. The counsellors even attended a panel discussion between the alumna of the institutes and discovered their journey after graduating.

Sharing her experience on campus, counsellor Theresa Joseph of Nahar International School feels that, “Contrary to popular opinion, most students don’t want to transfer abroad right after school. At 17 or 18, they want to stay close to home and continue studying in India, yet receive a global standard of education. The articulation options available at ISH offer just that! Now students can complete a portion of their programme in the country, gain the skills and confidence they need, and ultimately move to Switzerland, Spain or Paris for the rest of their education.”

Talking about the initiative, Mr Dilip Puri, Founder & CEO of Indian School of Hospitality, says, “It’s been an exciting year on campus as we welcomed our largest batch of students and bid farewell to the first set of undergraduates. At ISH, we strive to offer exceptional education and add to society by instilling a spirit of service in each student.

The retreat allows more counsellors to discover hospitality education at its finest and return to their students with a fresh perspective on the industry and the opportunity it offers.”

At the same time, Mr Kunal Vasudeva, Co-Founder and COO of Indian School of Hospitality, says, “It was a pleasure to host over a hundred counsellors at the 5th annual counsellors retreat at ISH. While we saw many familiar faces, we were especially pleased

to see counsellors from new schools visit our campus for the first time. We are honoured to be recognised as a reference school for hospitality business management and culinary arts. Counsellors, in our opinion, are the most significant link between a student’s decision and their exploration, thereby playing an important role in guiding students on their true path.”

AMID ISSUES, EXPERTS STRESS NEED TO GATEKEEP QUALITY IN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT RECRUITMENT

AMID ISSUES, EXPERTS STRESS NEED TO GATEKEEP QUALITY IN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT RECRUITMENT

Amid critical issues circulating in the Canadian international education scene, experts and thought leaders have voiced their stand to carefully gatekeep international recruitment processes to avoid the traumatic experience of some international students.

News has recently been circulating regarding freelance recruitment agents who mislead prospective students in order to sign them up to attend Canadian colleges.

These have resulted in international students wasting their time and resources to apply for visas and pay fees only to find out that what they signed up for was not exactly what was promised.

“As students in different countries aspire to resume or even start their overseas education after a long pause because of the pandemic, they can become targets of illegitimate players in international education recruitment,” notes Sanjay Laul, CEO and Founder of M Square Media, a 10-year-old education management company.

“This is why government and private partners need to work together and create new processes to ensure that only legitimate and reputable education recruitment consultants, who work to truly serve both students and institutions, are allowed to conduct international recruitment,” Laul adds.

M Square Media President Suneetha Qureshi also shares that there are legitimate recruitment partners who have agents and representatives who are trained both by the company and the institutions themselves.

“These agents are accountable for the accuracy of their messaging to students,” Qureshi reveals. “Once they make false claims, they will be blacklisted both by the education management company and the institutions and are no longer allowed to recruit students.”

According to Qureshi, the challenge is how to ensure that prospective international students only deal with legitimate agents and not fly-by-night recruiters.

Enrollment management can be tricky for institutions that manage multiple recruitment variables.   Students may apply to multiple institutions, who delay final destination decisions by accepting multiple offers until registration deadlines or defer registration due to Study Permit delays or rejections.  Filling classes may require admitting more students than they have space in order to balance.

There may also be a few small career colleges that admit substantially more students than their schools can physically accommodate as part of a cash grab.  Such practices can create accommodation and classroom availability problems for both the students and institutions.  “Regulations and monitoring should be implemented to prevent this,” Qureshi stresses.

Laul also underscores the need to ensure controlled enrollment which not only matches local demand for part-time student employability and meets the business and industry demand for workers, it also considers the availability of student services such as housing, transportation, and overall community development and growth.

There is also the perception that the growth in tech-based aggregators is adding distance between institution messaging and students, adding to the lack of information and increasing application volume with low conversion rates.

According to Laul, however, there are tech-based platforms that provide a holistic model with built-in student support through strategic partners, strong agent training, and qualification processes. These platforms have stringent prescreening requirements to ensure student qualification, legitimacy, and capability.

“In every field or industry, challenges can be identified but these are not the norm.  There are many good-quality and well-trained agents who provide excellent services to students and their families.  The majority of colleges and universities, private and public, offer high-quality education and career training; are committed to providing excellent student services and support for international students who are boldly attempting to adjust to new surroundings, systems, and cultures far from family and friends,” Laul stresses.

“And there are many more international students who made the adjustment, made many new friends, completed their studies, found meaningful employment, and went on to make a life in Canada,” he adds.

IDSA sets its footprints in Academics with its PG Diploma program in Direct Selling

The Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA) works as an interface between the Industry and policy-making governmental bodies. It has a major role to play in the Indian Market place for the companies to stay focused on the consistency of progress, say directly or indirectly.

Apart from several CSR activities and contributions of the industry to the Indian economy, it has set its footprints in academics as well. By introducing “direct selling” as a PG Diploma program in collaboration with Shoolini University, IDSA has become the world’s second-largest direct-selling association to link academics with the Industry.

Last year IDSA launched the centre of excellence (CEDSA), to facilitate a one-year post-diploma in direct sales, which added a new chapter in the direct selling ecosystem. With the introduction of “direct selling” in academics, has benefited youths with employment opportunities across the globe.

Recent feedback from students as well as the consumers of the related companies has proved how impactful direct selling is. Hence becoming the most critical part of sales and growth, if you are a businessman or own a mid-sized or even a small company.

The PG Diploma program in direct selling has been a huge success and brought new variations in the businesses to be more capable of handling the crisis and management qualities within the youth.

With its current activities on academics, IDSA has been hopeful that other universities and educational institutes will also give the much-needed impetus to formal studies in direct selling business models.

One of the recent surveys states that the direct selling industry, an industry association led by companies such as Amway, Modicare, and Herbalife, had said in a statement earlier that it has seen steady growth in sales as consumers stepped up shopping through direct selling channel amid nationwide lockdowns since last year. In a report released 2 years back, it said the sector saw 53 lakh, new entrants of direct sellers and consumers, in the last financial year.
