New Draka IP MediaLine Fiber for Live TV Production

Cologne, August 14th, 2019. The Multimedia Solutions division of the Prysmian Group presents its new Draka IP MediaLine Fiber based on the SMPTE ST 2110 standard for the first time at this year’s IBC. On display are non-metallic, gel-filled fiber optic central tube cables with 2 to 24 fibers for indoor broadcast applications and tight buffered fiber optic cables with patented BendBright® technology for mobile outdoor applications. With their high bandwidth and robust material, the new fiber optic cables meet the high demands of film and television production. The IBC will take place from 13th to 17th September in Amsterdam. BU Multimedia Solutions will be represented in Hall 12, Booth C31.

“Broadcast technology is moving more and more in the direction of fiber optics. Compared to conventional copper cables, fiber optic cables offer more bandwidth and less attenuation for data transmission,” says Dipl.-Ing. Marc-Oliver Hentschel, Product Manager Studio Broadcast BU Multimedia Solutions, Prysmian Group. “We are pleased to present our new IP MediaLine Fiber for high-speed data transport over IP networks for the first time to a broad specialist audience at IBC 2019.”

The new product range comprises the central loose tube cable with two to 24 fibers. With its FireRes® sheathing, the non-metallic, gel-filled cable is ideal for indoor installation. The CPR Cca cables with very high flame-retardant performance feature dielectric glass yarn armouring for rodent resistance and high waterproofness. The new IP MediaLine Fiber cable range also includes the MFC OS2 fiber optic cable designed for mobile use. The tight buffered 9/125 fiber cables are equipped with the patented BendBright® technology, making them very robust and resistant to bending. BendBright® combines three features: low macro-bending sensitivity, the new Draka Colorlock XS coating and tight glass geometry. Together they create the ideal fiber for all patch cord, interconnect and jumper applications, offering companies measurable technical, economic and environmental benefits.

The new Draka fiber optic cables comply with the SMPTE 2110 standard, which describes the transmission of digital video signals (video stream) over an IP network in real time. Unlike previous IP video standards, transmission takes place in uncompressed format. Each data set (video, audio and additional data) is synchronized without affecting each other. This allows data to be routed and edited separately, even for metadata (timecode, subtitles, and teletext) associated with the data sets.

SunForce™ m-PPE Particle Foam: Asahi Kasei Introduces Newly Developed Lightweight Material for Increased Efficiency of Electric Vehicle Batteries

Düsseldorf, August 13, 2019 – Lithium-ion batteries constitute an essential component of the electrification of the transport sector. Optimizing weight, size, safety and efficiency of the batteries is crucial to accelerate electromobility. With the m-PPE (modified polyphenylene ether) particle foam SunForce™, the Japanese technology company Asahi Kasei developed a material providing solutions for these challenges.

As they show their full performance only at a stable temperature, both heating and cooling units are installed to the automotive battery pack, especially for PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) and BEVs (battery electric vehicle). However, creating the right temperature environment for the battery consumes a significant amount of energy, which is why an optimized thermal management of battery packs will become increasingly important. At the same time, safety issues such as fire protection and crash behavior are at the top of the OEMs’ agenda.

Asahi Kasei has developed SunForce™ – a particle foam based on the engineering plastic m-PPE – as a solution to these challenges. Compared to standard foams made of polystyrene or polyolefin, the use of m-PPE equips this foamed material with unique properties, opening new doors for applications in thermal management and fire protection. The material is certified with UL 94 V-0 (Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances) fire protection class by the “Underwriters Laboratories” safety certification organization and thus contributes to an overall product safety.

SunForce™ is the first-of-its-kind material certified with the UL94 V-0 standard. In addition to this outstanding flame retardancy, the particle foam provides superior heat insulation properties while at the same time functioning as a lightweight shock-absorbing material for automotive battery packs. The aforementioned properties and features allow functions and applications fields beyond those of conventional foams. The product is suitable for applications in automotive battery packs, lightweight shock absorbers, sandwich composite cores with carbon fiber, as well as for thermal insulation applications.

High Processability and Significant Cost Advantages

In addition to its broad range of properties, SunForce™ also provides significant advantages from a cost perspective: The material can be processed via steam molding, a manufacturing process that requires significantly less pressure compared to injection molding with a metal mold. The beads are filled into a mold and are then expanded and simultaneously fused with the heat from steam. The steam molding process with lower pressure allows the use of an aluminium mold, which can be produced at 10 to 20 percent of the costs for a steel mold. Furthermore, a significant reduction of resin for the production process can be achieved.

A high dimensional accuracy of the material is a key factor for the proper function of the molded part. SunForce™ utilizes the characteristics of m-PPE plastic with its low coefficient of linear expansion in comparison with other plastics and the effects of temperature in the fabrication process are relatively small – allowing a very precise and accurate product design with complex structures. At the same time, the small size of the beads allows the molding of thin walls, while maintaining a high mechanical strength and stiffness.

Strategy for the European Market

Asahi Kasei Europe is strengthening its marketing and business development activities with a convincing portfolio of high-performance materials such as engineering plastics, synthetic rubbers, technical fibers and products for high-performance batteries: The European automotive industry is a clear and declared goal, and SunForce™ plays a key role here.

“Our intention is to strengthen the application development and technical marketing of SunForce™ in Germany and Europe – not only for automotive battery parts, but also in automotive electronics and composite core applications for exterior and interior parts, as well as medical devices, electric products and other advanced technologies”, Nobuhiro Kikuchi, Manager for SunForce™ at Asahi Kasei Europe, explains the company’s ambitions on the European market.

SunForce™ was introduced to the Japanese market in 2011. Marketing activities on the European market have started in 2016, with the establishment of Asahi Kasei’s European operational headquarter Asahi Kasei Europe in Düsseldorf, Germany. Together with its recently introduced polyamide beads foam, the company will present SunForce™ at the Foam Expo Europe (10-12 September) in Stuttgart, and at the K 2019 (16-23 October) in Düsseldorf.

Tiny, powerful, nice price – AXTON’s A-Series amplifiers

Compact digital amplifiers to give a bit of extra power to your factory radio or multimedia sat nav system are becoming more and more popular. Three mini power amps from the long established brand AXTON (http://www.axton.de/) brand have now been tested in the 04/2019 issue of the German Car & HiFi magazine: the A200 two-channel model, the A400 4-channel and the A500 5-channel amp.
AXTON is well-known for powerful, easy to install amplifiers at a fair price-performance. Among these the A-Series is no exception: “Tiny, powerful, nice price”, is the verdict of the testers on the new power amps, which puts the advantages of the AXTON units in a nutshell. All three amplifiers were able to put up a convincing all-round performance in a major test, being awarded the accolades “Sound Tip” (A200), “Best Product” (A400) and “Performance Tip” (A500).

COMPACT AND WELL DESIGNED
No more than 10.5 cm wide and 4 cm high, in the opinion of the tech journalists these AXTON units are not only “of a really convenient size”, but also “built to a high standard”. A first class finish anodized aluminum casing, selected components, and careful PCB layouts, encapsulated power terminals – the A-Series is, according to Car & HiFi, “tidy and well made, generously equipped, everything makes a positive impression.”

EMC TIP: UNIMPAIRED RADIO RECEPTION
The new A-Series also impresses with its ease of installation. Thanks to the compact size and low thermal radiation, these flexible Class D amplifiers can therefore be fitted in almost any installation situation. “Installing these power amps out of sight is no problem. It is quick and straightforward.”
Equipped with high-level inputs with auto turn-on, the AXTON units function “very well with a factory radio, including the automatic turn-on” says Car & HiFi. Equally positive: in the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test, all three Class D amplifiers showed no effect whatsoever on the DAB+ and FM spectrum “so that unimpaired radio reception is guaranteed. Installation in the dashboard thereby allowing proximity to the radio is also no problem.”

CONVINCING IN THE TEST LAB
Based on their performance in the test lab the AXTON units impressed in all respects. “With overall low distortion levels the A400 scored well with a lot of power. 90 and 166 watts for such a small four-channel power amp is a lot”, is one assessment by the testers on the performance of the 4-channel model. “The A200 has a superb frequency response, the filters work cleanly in the range of a subwoofer/satellite crossover”, report the tech journalists. And “Unlike other low price five-channel units the A500 really pushes power to the 4 small channels. Low THD completes the outstanding impression.”

IMPRESSIVE SOUND
In the sound lab “these little amps act amazingly big”, according to Car & HiFi. “With really powerful attack they indulge the ears, ensuring both good quality and level.” In spite of this performance and power the musicality of the new A-Series has not been ignored either. “The music sounds crystal clear, but without being harsh. Tone colors sound correct and consistent. (…) The performance of the A-Series is also adequate for discerning music listeners.”
The testers were also astounded by the bass power of the new power amp line – especially in view of the compact size: “Considering the tiny housing, the pull in the low bass is more than impressive, especially as the deep bass response is not achieved by overly soft pulses.”

SUMMARY
The fact that the new AXTON units impressed the testers with a convincing all-round performance reinforces the final verdict: “Our test shows the A-amps shine with their really good quality and impressive performance”, is the praise to be heard from the tech journalists. “Very compact casings, great fitness for purpose, and not least very low prices are all on the plus side. Everything right, AXTON!”
