Premiere for PA Foam – Asahi Kasei at Foam Expo Europe 2019

Düsseldorf, August 30, 2019 – From 10 to 12 September, the Japanese technology company Asahi Kasei presents its high-performance foam materials SunForce™ and, for the first time, PA Foam – the world’s first polyamide bead foam – at the Foam Expo Europe in Stuttgart, Germany. The materials open new doors for heat and sound insulating applications in the automotive industry.

At this year’s Foam Expo Europe, Asahi Kasei introduces solutions for increased battery efficiency and sound insulation in the automotive sector. This includes SunForce™ – a particle foam based on the engineering plastic m-PPE (modified polyphenylene ether). Compared to standard foams made of polystyrene or polyolefin, the use of m-PPE equips this foamed material with unique properties, opening up new possibilities for applications in thermal management and fire protection. The material is certified with the UL 94 V-0 fire protection class (Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances) and thus contributes to an overall product safety.

SunForce™ is the first-of-its-kind material certified with the UL94 V-0 standard. In addition to this outstanding flame retardancy, the material provides superior heat insulation properties while at the same time functioning as a lightweight shock-absorbing material for automotive battery packs. These properties and characteristics enable functions and applications that go beyond those of conventional foams. SunForce™ is suitable for applications in automotive battery packs, lightweight shock absorbers, sandwich composite cores with carbon fiber, as well as for thermal insulation applications.

Noise reducing properties through C- and macaroni-shaped polyamide beads

Asahi Kasei is one of only four fully integrated polyamide manufacturers worldwide – and is able to produce PA 6.6 completely from monomer to compound. Based on this expertise, the company is currently developing PA Foam – the world’s first foam made of polyamide beads. The material likewise offers solutions for current challenges in the automotive industry.

It features the typical heat, chemical and oil resistant properties of polyamide, mixed with an out-standing rigidity or noise reducing quality – depending on the shape of the beads. PA Foam consisting of round-shaped beads features a strong rigidity. This makes it a promising alternative material for aluminum and metal in structural applications, as well as for use for insulators, ducts, spacers or other lightweight parts of the battery case of electrified vehicles.

PA Foam with a C- or macaroni-shape, on the other hand, provides noise insulation in addition to the typical polyamide properties. Possible applications can be found everywhere around the car, especially in the engine compartment, where the material can unfold its unique qualities. Used for engine covers, it does not only contribute to lightweight, but also significantly reduces the radiating engine noise, making the car quieter in total.

Together with SunForce™, the newly developed PA foam will be on display at booth 533.

BaFin maintains tight restrictions on CFD trading

Germany”s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, better known by its abbreviation “BaFin”, recently determined that restrictions in Germany on the marketing, distribution and sale of contracts for difference (CFDs) to retail investors will continue to apply going forward.

BaFin had already placed tight restrictions on financial CFD trading back in 2017 in order to protect investors. Due to the high risk of loss, it imposed a total prohibition on selling retail investors CFDs that include an obligation to make further contributions. We at the commercial law firm MTR Rechtsanwälte www.mtrlegal.com (https://www.mtrlegal.com) note that BaFin”s concerns were shared by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), which also decided to place tight restrictions on CFD trading in order to protect retail investors.

BaFin has since restated its significant concerns regarding the protection of investors trading CFDs that include an obligation to make further contributions. On July 23, 2019, it stipulated in a general administrative act that trading financial CFDs that include an obligation to make further contributions will remain subject to tight restrictions going forward. As a result, the level of protection afforded to retail investors will be maintained, even though the measures taken by the ESMA have expired.

BaFin views CFDs that include an obligation to make further contributions as carrying an incalculable risk of loss for retail investors, as losses are not limited to the investment but rather may encompass the entirety of the investor”s assets. To reduce this risk, the leverage limits and negative balance protections set out by the ESMA will continue to apply in Germany. According to BaFin, standardized risk warnings are essential as well. It also maintains that high-risk CFDs must not be made more appealing to retails investors by offering initial credit, bonuses or the like.

This general administrative act provides that the restrictions imposed by the ESMA on the marketing, distribution and sale of CFDs to retail investors will continue to apply. This also means that restrictions continue to apply concerning the amount of leverage permitted and that losses are limited.

These measures are designed, on the one hand, to bolster investor protection and, on the other hand, to deter dubious providers. The market has its fair share of rotten apples out to relieve investors of their money and who show time and time again that they are willing to circumvent legal regulations to this end.

Investors facing problems with financial CFDs can turn to lawyers experienced in the field of capital markets law.

SunForce™ m-PPE Particle Foam: Asahi Kasei Introduces Newly Developed Lightweight Material for Increased Efficiency of Electric Vehicle Batteries

Düsseldorf, August 13, 2019 – Lithium-ion batteries constitute an essential component of the electrification of the transport sector. Optimizing weight, size, safety and efficiency of the batteries is crucial to accelerate electromobility. With the m-PPE (modified polyphenylene ether) particle foam SunForce™, the Japanese technology company Asahi Kasei developed a material providing solutions for these challenges.

As they show their full performance only at a stable temperature, both heating and cooling units are installed to the automotive battery pack, especially for PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) and BEVs (battery electric vehicle). However, creating the right temperature environment for the battery consumes a significant amount of energy, which is why an optimized thermal management of battery packs will become increasingly important. At the same time, safety issues such as fire protection and crash behavior are at the top of the OEMs’ agenda.

Asahi Kasei has developed SunForce™ – a particle foam based on the engineering plastic m-PPE – as a solution to these challenges. Compared to standard foams made of polystyrene or polyolefin, the use of m-PPE equips this foamed material with unique properties, opening new doors for applications in thermal management and fire protection. The material is certified with UL 94 V-0 (Standard for Safety of Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances) fire protection class by the “Underwriters Laboratories” safety certification organization and thus contributes to an overall product safety.

SunForce™ is the first-of-its-kind material certified with the UL94 V-0 standard. In addition to this outstanding flame retardancy, the particle foam provides superior heat insulation properties while at the same time functioning as a lightweight shock-absorbing material for automotive battery packs. The aforementioned properties and features allow functions and applications fields beyond those of conventional foams. The product is suitable for applications in automotive battery packs, lightweight shock absorbers, sandwich composite cores with carbon fiber, as well as for thermal insulation applications.

High Processability and Significant Cost Advantages

In addition to its broad range of properties, SunForce™ also provides significant advantages from a cost perspective: The material can be processed via steam molding, a manufacturing process that requires significantly less pressure compared to injection molding with a metal mold. The beads are filled into a mold and are then expanded and simultaneously fused with the heat from steam. The steam molding process with lower pressure allows the use of an aluminium mold, which can be produced at 10 to 20 percent of the costs for a steel mold. Furthermore, a significant reduction of resin for the production process can be achieved.

A high dimensional accuracy of the material is a key factor for the proper function of the molded part. SunForce™ utilizes the characteristics of m-PPE plastic with its low coefficient of linear expansion in comparison with other plastics and the effects of temperature in the fabrication process are relatively small – allowing a very precise and accurate product design with complex structures. At the same time, the small size of the beads allows the molding of thin walls, while maintaining a high mechanical strength and stiffness.

Strategy for the European Market

Asahi Kasei Europe is strengthening its marketing and business development activities with a convincing portfolio of high-performance materials such as engineering plastics, synthetic rubbers, technical fibers and products for high-performance batteries: The European automotive industry is a clear and declared goal, and SunForce™ plays a key role here.

“Our intention is to strengthen the application development and technical marketing of SunForce™ in Germany and Europe – not only for automotive battery parts, but also in automotive electronics and composite core applications for exterior and interior parts, as well as medical devices, electric products and other advanced technologies”, Nobuhiro Kikuchi, Manager for SunForce™ at Asahi Kasei Europe, explains the company’s ambitions on the European market.

SunForce™ was introduced to the Japanese market in 2011. Marketing activities on the European market have started in 2016, with the establishment of Asahi Kasei’s European operational headquarter Asahi Kasei Europe in Düsseldorf, Germany. Together with its recently introduced polyamide beads foam, the company will present SunForce™ at the Foam Expo Europe (10-12 September) in Stuttgart, and at the K 2019 (16-23 October) in Düsseldorf.
