Mazda Accelerates R&D of Rotary Engines Adapted to New Era

Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda) will accelerate its research and development of rotary engines (RE) that are adapted to the new era in its efforts to continue to deliver the joy of cars through solutions that are appropriate for the times toward the realization of carbon-neutral society.

The ‘RE Development Group’ has been reinstated in Powertrain Technology Development Department of Powertrain Development Division on February 1, 2024, preluding a sequel of the RE story. The new RE Development Group will continue to evolve RE used as generators, and will conduct research and development in areas such as regulatory compliance in major markets as well as the application of carbon-neutral fuels.

Commenting on the move, Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer, and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Ichiro Hirose said, “In Mazda’s history, the rotary engine is a special symbol of our ‘challenger spirit.’ We are deeply grateful to all those who have supported RE to date, and are pleased to announce the rebirth of the organization that develops RE, the engine that has been loved by customers around the world. For the last six years, RE engineers have been part of the engine development organization where they engaged in the development of state-of-the-art internal combustion engine functions as well as the ultimate improvement in efficiency. Those engineers have broadened their perspective beyond the boundaries of engine systems, and have trained themselves to master the ‘Model-Based Development,’ which is one of Mazda’s engineering strengths. This time, 36 engineers will gather in one group to make a breakthrough in the research and development of RE. In the age of electrification and in a carbon-neutral society, we promise to keep delivering attractive cars that excite customers with our ‘challenger spirit.'”

The rotary engine is an engine with a unique structure that generates power by rotating a triangular rotor. Mazda was the first to install RE in the Cosmo Sport introduced in 1967, and for many years since then, Mazda has been working to improve performance in terms of output, exhaust-gas purification, fuel economy, and durability as the only automobile manufacturer to mass-produce rotary engines. In June 2023, the company resumed mass production of vehicles with rotary engines for the first time in approximately 11 years since the end of production of the Mazda RX-8 in 2012. Currently, the Mazda MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, the 12th model that mounts a rotary engine, has been introduced in Japan and Europe.

Mazda will continue to pursue the ‘Joy of Driving’ under its core value, “Human Centric”, and aim to deliver ‘Joy of Living’ by creating moving experiences in customers’ daily lives.

Eisai Commences Fully-Fledged Business Activities at Pharma Sales Subsidiary in South Africa

Eisai Co., Ltd. announced today that fully-fledged operations have begun at Eisai Pharmaceuticals Africa (Pty) Ltd (“Eisai South Africa”), a pharmaceutical sales subsidiary recently established in Johannesburg, South Africa, and direct sales operations and business activities have commenced in Africa. Eisai South Africa is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eisai.

South Africa has a population of about 60 million, with the largest pharmaceutical market in Sub-Saharan Africa at 3.477 billion USD in 2022, exhibiting an average growth rate of 6% in local currency terms from 2018 to 2022.1 In 2017, Eisai started selling Eisai products in South Africa through local distribution partners, marketing anticancer drugs Halaven® and Lenvima®, and the antiepileptic drug Fycompa®. Eisai South Africa was established in May 2022, and took over the marketing authorization approvals for those products from the local distribution partners. Eisai South Africa has started sales and marketing activities directly for Lenvima and Fycompa from January 2024, as well as Halaven from February 2024. Additionally, the market launch of anti-insomnia drug Dayvigo® is planned for June 2024. Eisai South Africa plans to expand sales of these products to other Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states, such as Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Moreover, a regulatory filing for Alzheimer’s disease treatment LEQEMBI® in South Africa is scheduled in FY2023 ending March 31, 2024.

Kenya Branch, Eisai Pharmaceuticals Africa (Pty) Ltd (“Eisai Kenya”), established in October 2022 in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya, as a branch of Eisai South Africa, will expand access to new treatments such as Halaven and Fycompa in Kenya and other East African Community (EAC) countries, such as Tanzania and Uganda through local distribution partners. Eisai Kenya will also serve as a site for collaboration with research institutes, such as Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), an important local partner in the global health field of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and malaria, one of Eisai’s focus areas, and the Nagasaki University Institute of Tropical Medicine’s Kenya Research Station, to further expand networks of people and promote R&D and access to medicines.

With the rapid economic growth and improvement of the medical environment in Africa in recent years, the average life expectancy is increasing, and there is expected to be a growing demand for cancer and dementia treatments. Meanwhile, improving access to medicines for NTDs, which cause a vicious cycle of poverty and infectious diseases in endemic areas, potentially hindering economic growth, is also an imminent challenge. Seeking solutions to these challenges in Africa, Eisai will continue its initiatives to deliver necessary medicines to the patients who need them through Eisai South Africa and Eisai Kenya.

Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center Receives a $30K Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to Tour Its Black History Quilting Exhibition

“Home, Heart, Heritage was the first major art project we created at the Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center,” says Cheryl Strichik, the MACC’s executive director. “The first phase of this 5-year quilting project was launched in 2018, and it quickly became the cornerstone of all of our Black History exhibitions. Naturally, we are honored that the National Endowment for the Arts is partnering with the MACC so that we can share this important exhibition with youth, college students and community members across the Southeast United States.”

The MACC’s Home, Heart, Heritage quilting project consists of a series of Black History portrait quilts that educate, elevate, and enhance the cultural community of Middle Tennessee and beyond. Each quilt was inspired by notable Americans of color who have contributed to the legacy of our country. The five collaborative quilts feature themed portraits: Tennessee Roots; Authors, Writers & Poets; Black Women Rise; Science, Medicine & Technology; and Patriotism & Valor. Guided by professional teaching artists, more than 150 participants created a portrait of their choice using reference photos, traditional methods and materials.

The MACC’s goal in touring the Home, Heart, Heritage exhibit is to strengthen the public’s knowledge and appreciation of cultural figures and traditional art forms not otherwise taught in a classroom setting. The exhibit will provide educational value and cultural impact to museums, libraries, universities, or other publicly accessible centers in both urban and rural communities.

The tour will begin at the Pryor Art Gallery at Columbia State Community College, in Columbia, Tenn., and will then move on to the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center in Clarksville, Tenn., before visiting additional sites in Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) is a jewel-box art museum and education facility housed in one of Tennessee’s most spectacular antebellum mansions. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the MACC has staged exhibitions featuring everything from the ceramic art of Pablo Picasso to the evening gowns of Princess Diana. The artwork of local artists and military veterans are also on frequent display. As an art school, the MACC offers classes to more than 900 children and adults each year. The MACC also provides free arts outreach and healing arts to underserved children, families and military veterans. For more information, visit www.monthavenarts.org or call (615) 822-0789.

Colette Lane’s New Book, “Northern Lights: True Stories of UFO Sightings, Paranormal Activity, Psychic Relationships,” is a Mystical Work Based on True Events

Colette Lane has completed her new book, “Northern Lights: True Stories of UFO Sightings, Paranormal Activity, Psychic Relationships”: a fascinating and mysterious look at the different realms of the universe.

Lane writes, “I didn’t give UFOs and extraterrestrials much of a thought back then, even after I saw them back in the early sixties and seventies. It was several years later that I started to recall past memories of UFO contact. And although I had been experiencing psychic ability and premonition from as far back as I can remember, it just seemed like a normal part of everyday life. This ability of intuition, ESP, ran very strong on my mother’s side of the family, being Gaelic and Celtic Irish, but also seemed to run on my father’s side. Everyone in my family has been born with this ability to some degree. I have always had a very deep sense of spiritualism knowing that there is something much greater and bigger out there in the universe than just ourselves.”

Published by Newman Springs Publishing, Colette Lane’s curious book is a journey through the mysterious realms of the world. She talks about psychic phenomena, UFOs, and extraterrestrial activity. Each chapter dives deep into a different subject and dissects each one. Lane’s writing is a glimpse into an undetected world.

Lane uses her real-life experience to walk readers through all the unseen elements of the universe. She has always been attuned to the supernatural and uses these skills to connect readers with it as well. Any reader who is even slightly interested in the supernatural will find something enticing within these pages.

Readers who wish to experience this compelling work can purchase “Northern Lights: True Stories of UFO Sightings, Paranormal Activity, Psychic Relationships” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iBooks Store, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble.

Baldor Specialty Foods, the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic’s largest premium foods distributor, announced today two strategic executive additions to CEO TJ Murphy’s leadership team. The new positions represent a continued investment in the company’s growth trajectory, with a particular focus on the happiness and success of employees and customers.

The new appointments include:

Benjamin Walker, who has been promoted to Chief Revenue Officer. A Baldor veteran, Ben joined the company in 2013 as Director of Business Development, and soon after was promoted to Director of Marketing and Business Development. After numerous successful campaigns, he became Senior Director and VP before ultimately becoming SVP of Sales, Marketing, and Merchandising in 2021. Among his career achievements are the development of the Baldorfood.com website and ecommerce experience, the pivot to Home Delivery during COVID, as well as the creation of a Marketing function and a Revenue organization.  In his new role as Chief Revenue Officer, Ben will continue to lead the revenue generating functions of Sales, Marketing, and Merchandising while helping to drive the company’s growth strategy and building greater cross-functional collaboration at the highest level.

Regina Picciano, who has joined Baldor as Chief People Officer. Regina has nearly two decades of HR experience – including employee and labor relations, engagement and culture strategies, talent acquisition, and policy and compliance management. Most recently, Regina was at Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, one of the nation’s largest alcohol distributors, where she was VP of both the HR and Sales teams. She held previous roles at Guardian Life, Coca Cola, and Diageo. Regina has a master’s degree in human resource management from Fordham University. In addition to managing the HR function at Baldor, she will be placing a specific emphasis on supporting and strengthening the company culture, as well as enhancing the company’s relationship with the external community.

“I couldn’t be happier with the leadership team we’ve been building over the last 18 months,” said Baldor CEO TJ Murphy, who notes that it was important to him to elevate the emphasis on customers and employees to the top level of the company.  “Since the moment he got to Baldor, Ben has demonstrated a commitment to our customers. He has driven our company forward again and again with care for the customer at the center of everything he does. This promotion is a natural next step for him. And while Regina comes from outside, her experience at Southern Glazer’s, a beverage distributor to hospitality, is incredibly relevant to us, and she’s demonstrated throughout her career an employee-first mindset. These two hires, in collaboration with our incredible existing team, will help us define the future of Baldor and take advantage of opportunities that lie before us, while keeping us committed to our core values.”

“Over my eleven years at Baldor, I’ve gained a deep understanding of our business, our vendors, and the incredible customers that contribute daily to our success,” said Benjamin Walker. “As Chief Revenue Officer, my goal is to continue to lead us in a culture of radical hospitality, turning the tables on our customers to ensure their success by providing the best products and best service. We will sharpen our existing offerings and continue to differentiate into new solutions, while also expanding the markets we serve.”
