Del Amo Construction Brings New Life to K-12 Educational Spaces Across Southern California

LOS ANGELESOct. 26, 2021PRLog — Del Amo Construction is helping schools throughout the Southern California region welcome students back to campus with new and upgraded facilities that elevate the educational experience. Over the last year, the award-winning, privately owned construction company has been involved in a number of projects that have transformed private and charter institutions alike.

From new facilities and amenities that improve student life, to upgrades supportive of enhanced learning, the Del Amo Construction team creates and transforms exciting spaces for a wide variety of students and needs.

“We are proud to be a part of supporting the students and faculty entering the new school year as they continue to navigate the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Habiba Manjurr, project manager at Del Amo Construction.

In recent months, Del Amo Construction has provided a variety of pre-construction, construction and renovation services on behalf of several Southern California schools, resulting in essential educational spaces such as classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, gymnasiums, a performing arts center, a dormitory, cafeterias and kitchens for students, faculty and staff. Select projects include:

●      Marlborough School (https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https…), Los Angeles — Del Amo Construction’s three-part project at the independent college-preparatory secondary school for girls comprises three distinct building areas which require extensive renovations to an existing facility. Area 1 includes the renovation of a basement-level locker room along with office and classroom facilities within the existing gymnasium building, totaling approximately 6,100 square feet. Area 2 comprises a complete overhaul of a 540-seat performing arts complex which includes a new 1,500-square-foot orchestra pit lift, telescoping bleachers, a retractable wall system and state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment. Area 3 includes the refurbishment of an existing outdoor plaza space and landscaping totaling approximately 7,800 square feet.

●      Oakwood School (https://www.oakwoodschool.org/), North Hollywood — In late 2020, Del Amo Construction began the conversion of an existing kitchen and classroom on the K-12 co-educational independent day school campus into a commercial kitchen and servery totaling approximately 1,800 square feet. The project also included the installation of an exterior cooler/freezer building, restroom upgrades to meet ADA compliance as well as the addition of a new fire sprinkler and alarm system to seven classrooms, three offices, the multi-purpose room and remaining areas of the building. In the multi-purpose room specifically, the ceiling was also replaced with new insulation, and a new acoustical ceiling was installed along with new doors and windows. The entire project was completed in August 2021.

●      Mirman School (https://mirman.org/), Los Angeles — In April 2021, the Del Amo Construction project team installed six temporary, DSA-approved prefabricated modular classroom units on the school’s soccer field along with associated prefabricated ramps and landings as well as related site work. In addition, a prefabricated office unit was installed on an existing parking lot. The modular units are intended to help with the distancing of K-8 students at the school for gifted children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Del Amo Construction also recently built utility pathways for a new Learning Center building, which is part of a campus-wide master plan.

●      The Webb Schools (https://www.webb.org/), Claremont — Del Amo Construction restored the boarding and day school’s nearly 13,000-square-foot Appleby Dormitory during the spring of 2021. The dormitory was returned to its original single-occupant layout by infilling door openings that were created between adjoining rooms in a previous remodel. The team also completed a number of other interior upgrades, including installing new HVAC and sprinkler systems and adding various tenant improvements such as new lighting fixtures and restroom finishes.

●      Vista Heritage Global Academy (https://www.vistaheritagems.org/), Santa Ana — This spring, Del Amo Construction completed the renovation of three of the charter middle school’s existing flexible, multi-purpose bays, two of which were previously unoccupied. All three bays received new roofing and MEP’s, plus a path for pedestrian travel and parking. The project also included seismic upgrades to the campus as well as the addition of a new gym, cafeteria and classrooms. The team also installed a new exterior façade for the campus.

●      Vaughn Middle School for International Studies & Technology (https://mit.myvaughncharter.com/), San Fernando — Late last year, the Del Amo Construction team completed a new ground-up multi-story classroom building intended to serve the student population of one of five campuses associated with the first conversion charter school in the nation. The new, three-story Type II building houses 21 regular classrooms, a music room and a multi-purpose room.

Over the last 50 years, Del Amo Construction has built an extensive portfolio of projects which serve K-12 students in meaningful ways. Canada – EllisDon Construction Services Inc. ordered to pay $100,000 for violating the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994

Calgary, Alberta

Wildlife enforcement officers work across the country, enforcing the laws and regulations that protect and conserve wildlife and its habitat. This work aims to reduce threats and damage to biodiversity for the benefit of Canadians and all living things.

On October 4, 2021, EllisDon Construction Services Inc. was sentenced in the Provincial Court of Alberta in Calgary after pleading guilty to one count of violating section 6(a) of the Migratory Birds Regulations pursuant to the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994 (MBCA, 1994). The offences relate to disturbing migratory bird nests without a permit during the course of their work at the West Calgary Ring Road project site in June 2019.

EllisDon Construction Services Inc. was ordered to pay a mandatory minimum fine of $100,000. The fine will be directed to the Government of Canada’s Environmental Damages Fund. In addition to the fine, EllisDon Construction Services Inc. has been ordered by the court to develop educational material on migratory birds for staff and subcontractors to review on‑site during staff orientation.

On June 10, 2019, a member of the public discovered bird boxes on the ground and heard chirping. After the bird boxes were reattached to fence posts, it was confirmed that Tree Swallows, a protected migratory bird species, were actively using seven of these nest boxes. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) enforcement officers responded to the complaint from a member of the public by conducting an inspection on an EllisDon worksite, which led to an investigation. During the site inspection, enforcement officers determined that approximately seven bird boxes had been taken down and subsequently reattached to the fence posts. The officers also observed several Tree Swallows flying around the site and accessing the bird boxes.

As a result of this conviction, the company’s name will be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry. The Registry contains information on convictions of corporations registered for offences committed under certain federal environmental laws.

ECCC has created a free subscription service to help Canadians stay current with what the Government of Canada is doing to protect our natural environment.

David Pacifici of Berkley Construction Professional to Discuss Progressive Design-Build – the Solution for Unbalanced Risk Transfer? at IRMI Construction Risk Conference

David Pacifici, a senior vice president at Berkley Construction Professional, a Berkley Company, will answer the question, is “Progressive Design-Build–the Solution to Unbalanced Risk Transfer?” at the IRMI Construction Risk Conference to be held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in California. Scheduled for Tuesday, November 9th at 8:30 a.m. PST, the SNAP Talk session will highlight the benefits of using the Progressive Design-Build method to reduce the uncertainty and financial losses contractors commonly face.

“The use of fast-track scheduling combined with a fixed price on many public infrastructure projects utilizing the Design-Build project delivery method has led to an increase in large losses, creating an unsustainable long-term situation for contractors,” says Pacifici. “Using the Progressive Design-Build method may help to resolve these challenges by applying a guaranteed maximum price to the project only after the design has been confirmed during the preconstruction phase.”

According to Pacifici, the owner’s participation is key to the entire model. After clarifying the scope and priorities during the project’s initial phase, the owner and contractor will then be able to reach an agreement that’s meant to decrease the design risks to a manageable level before the construction stage begins. As a result, the reduction of these uncertainties may not only lower the costs for both the design-builder and owner, but also enhance the project’s transparency with an open-book approach.

Pacifici has more than 30 years of experience as an underwriter and licensed broker specializing in Construction and Design Professional Liability Insurance. For the past 20 plus years, his focus has been on providing professional liability insurance to real estate developers, construction contractors and design professionals. He specializes in insurance solutions for large infrastructure and vertical projects.

Hong Kong – Construction material supplier and its director convicted of supplying and possessing for sale paints and coatings with false trade descriptions (with photos)

Construction material supplier and its director convicted of supplying and possessing for sale paints and coatings with false trade descriptions (with photos)

******************************************************************************************

A construction material supplier and one of its directors were convicted and each fined $25,000 today (September 8) at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts for supplying and possessing for sale paints and coatings with false trade descriptions applied, in contravention of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance (TDO). About 325 litres of paints and coatings involved in the case with false claims of origin were also confiscated.

Hong Kong Customs received information in mid-last year alleging that some paints and coatings sold at a construction material supplier were suspected to be bearing false descriptions of the place of manufacture. A follow-up investigation revealed that a type of paint and two types of coatings were labelled as manufactured by a company in the US, but they were in fact manufactured in Canada and China, which was contrary to the claim. Customs took immediate action and seized a batch of paints and coatings with suspected false claims of origin at the company involved.

Customs reminds traders to comply with the requirements of the TDO and consumers to purchase at reputable shops.

Under the TDO, any person who supplies goods with a false trade description in the course of trade or business, or is in possession of any goods for sale with a false trade description, commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.

Members of the public may report any suspected violations of the TDO to Customs’ 24-hour hotline 2545 6182 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk).
