SAN FRANCISCOMarch 7, 2022PRLog — Sista Circle: Black Women in Tech (SC: BWiT), a solidarity group dedicated to supporting the work of Black Women in the technology industry, today announced that Women Veterans worldwide are invited to kick off Women’s History Month with a free virtual celebration on March 16, 2022, featuring a panel discussion moderated by Isabel Céspedes, Creative Director of SC: BWiT.

The theme of the discussion is “Solidarity in Transition,” with panelists exploring issues

minority female Veterans face after separation from the military. Guests will share empowering reflections regarding their career journeys, including how non-Veterans can help mitigate potential roadblocks and setbacks for future job seekers.

SC: BWiT members will also serve as panelists, according to founder Alexandria “Lexi B.” Butler.

“It is important to highlight the diverse and complex narratives within the Black female

diaspora,” remarked Mrs. Butler. “The Black woman Veteran experience is a narrative and

identity that is not adequately highlighted. By creating this panel and choosing to spotlight this version of Black life, non-Veterans will know how to hold solidarity and unify with their Black veteran sisters. Black women must choose to understand the nuanced differences among us so that empathy can rise— and support and respect can be born among us”.

Panelists include Tracy Ferguson, US Army (Senior Engineering Manager at Twitter); LaTorya Walker, US Army (SpecTech Diversity Recruiting & Strategic Sourcer at Meta); and Renee D. Cassidy, Air Force (Manager Development Consultant- Twitter).

In a departure from the in-person events that made the SC: BWiT brand popular, organizers promise the experience is in keeping with SC: BWiT mission to provide safe and authentic spaces for Black women to discuss and organize around issues facing their communities.

“We recognized that a significant portion of our members are veterans, and we want to create a space to engage in an open conversation around transferable skills and translating military language for a tech environment,” said SC: BWiT Creative Director Isabel Cespedes. “There is much insight to be gained from these women, and all too often, recruiters pass on extremely qualified talent who happen to be veterans. I hope that this event serves as the beginning of many ongoing discussions.”

Compass Virtual Solving the Growing Shortage of Access to Psychiatric and Intensive Behavioral Health Services in Illinois

Compass Virtual, by Compass Health Center, an evidence-based Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) virtual behavioral health treatment program, announced today its milestone of delivering more than 20,000 patient-days of intensive care in 2021. Compass Virtual’s announcement kicks off the expansion of its mission to address the state-wide mental health crisis by increasing access to individualized PHP/IOP programs for adolescents, young adults, and adults across Illinois. This expansion will provide Illinois residents with non-hospital-based PHP/IOP mental health access while maintaining life at home.

Compass Virtual was launched in early 2020 by Compass Health Center, Illinois’ largest provider of PHP/IOP and psychiatric services. For over a decade, Compass Health Center has provided outcomes-driven and patient-centered intensive behavioral care through brick-and-mortar locations throughout the Chicagoland area. Compass Virtual was designed, with the planning stages long proceeding the current pandemic, to increase availability to PHP/IOP levels of mental health care in Illinois-based communities suffering from inadequate access to critical intensive behavioral health services. It leverages the experience and training of Compass Health Center’s brick-and-mortar locations to deliver comprehensive PHP/IOP programs, which include video-based group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, psychiatric visits, and experiential therapy.

“There was a mental health crisis before the pandemic, and there is a massive shortage of both psychiatrists and specialized clinicians in this country,” said Claudia Welke, MD, Chief Medical Officer, and co-founder of Compass Health Center and Compass Virtual. “The need for high-quality, intermediate levels of mental health care, as an alternative to the Emergency Room or inpatient hospitalization, is critical. Patients are placed on months-long waiting lists to see a psychiatrist. At Compass, patients see a psychiatrist within days. This shortage of psychiatric services is more pronounced for adolescents and in rural communities. Compass Virtual mirrors our in-person group therapy-based intensive programs, with equal patient outcomes.”

Compass Virtual partners with community stakeholders, hospitals, insurance companies, schools, and local therapists, to help patients seeking PHP/IOP level care to maintain life at home while receiving life-changing intensive behavioral health treatment online. The goal of treatment is to help patients return to a lower level of care, such as once-a-week outpatient therapy, as quickly as possible. Compass Virtual, like Compass Health Center, is enmeshed with the communities it serves, providing clinician-led workshops, webinars, continuing education credits, and access to knowledge from providers and licensed clinicians.

Even as Compass Virtual focuses on expanding PHP/IOP access in Illinois, plans are underway to expand the offering to additional states in 2022 and beyond. Compass’s goal is to provide access to intensive care for children, adolescents, young adults, and adults in need throughout the country to change lives for the better.

About Compass Virtual

Compass Health Center was founded in 2011 by David Schreiber, MD, and Claudia Welke, MD, child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrists who recognized the Chicago community’s need for intensive, non-hospital-based psychiatric care. While working together in a hospital that provided PHP/IOP and inpatient hospitalization, Drs. Schreiber and Welke realized that there were not enough psychiatrists or hospital beds to treat the children they saw in behavioral health crises. As a result, children were being placed on long wait lists, which often only made them sicker, resulting in ER visits that would lead to admission for inpatient care. Drs. Schreiber and Welke realized that with the proper resources in place, many of these ER and inpatient hospitalizations could have been avoided and replaced with a level of care that was timelier, more appropriate, and less costly and disruptive.

Compass Health Center’s evidence-based, comprehensive treatment model provides patients ages five through adulthood with intensive care while maintaining life at home. Meeting patients’ behavioral health needs leads to better, outcomes-driven care. Today, Compass Health Center is Illinois’ largest and most respected PHP/IOP program, with more than 45 full-time psychiatrists/PNP’s and 350+ highly trained master-level therapists covering both location-based and virtual care models. Our primary treatment modalities include psychiatry, group therapy (e.g., DBT, CBT, ACT, ERP), individual therapy, family therapy, experiential therapy, and psychiatric nursing.

Pack the Pantry Virtual Food Drive Launched to Fill Local College Food Pantries

50% of area college students face food insecurity.

Approximately 50% of local community college students grapple with food insecurity. As a result of not having reliable, consistent access to food, students are more likely to miss classes or drop out of school.

The pandemic continues to severely impact students, and has increased the demand at food pantries on local college campuses.

With the 3rd annual Pack the Pantry food drive, California Coast Credit Union is partnering with all of the local community college campuses and the San Diego Food Bank to raise funds and fill local college pantries.

During the month of November, you can donate online to help provide much-needed food for local college students at https://www.calcoastcu.org/news-and-events/pack-the-pantry-2021/. Donors can even select which college food pantry they want their donation directed to.

“Pack the Pantry is a wonderful new tradition that is making a real difference in the lives of our region’s community college students,” said Dr. Carlos O. Turner Cortez, SDICCCA President and Chancellor of the San Diego Community College District. “Food insecurity is a real issue on campus and this virtual food drive will go a long way to support the work being done at each of food pantries at our 10 local colleges.”

Cal Coast President & CEO Todd Lane said, “The need for access to nutritious food is more important than ever for students and Cal Coast encourages other area companies and the general public to join us as we help local students who are experiencing hunger.”

Both the San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank are donating their services to support the Pack the Pantry food drive by providing the food to the community colleges at the end of the fundraiser.

“The San Diego Food Bank is proud to partner again this year with Cal Coast Credit Union and the San Diego & Imperial Counties Community Colleges Association to raise vital food and funds for eleven community college food pantries,” said Casey Castillo, Interim CEO for the San Diego Food Bank and its North County Food Bank chapter.

“The Food Bank launched its College Hunger-Relief Program to address the ongoing issue of food insecurity working directly with local community colleges and universities to set up easy-to-access food pantries right on campus. The community’s contributions to this month-long campaign will help stock the shelves of these pantries with nutritious foods thus bringing hope to those students facing food insecurity.”
