Art Exhibition Explores Multifaceted Manifestations in Contemporary Art

The MIA Curatorial Projects is thrilled to announce its fourth group show of the year, titled “Intercrossing. Flashes in Current Art.” Curated by Dr. Milagros Bello, this original exhibition will take place at a multidisciplinary gallery in Little Haiti, located at 395 NW 59th Street, Miami. Running for a month, from July 15 to August 15, the exhibition delves into the theme of intercrossing and explores its multifaceted manifestations in contemporary art.

As the curator of the show, Dr. Milagros Bello aims to de-objectify stagnant art beliefs and taboos, generating novel associations and dialogues that explore opposing and intercrossing topics and materials, which often defy conventions. “The purpose of this curated exhibit is to dismantle rigidity and enforce the diffraction and disruption present in the current visual arts. The exhibition challenges visual formats, altering the circuit of images and their narratives. The selected artworks permeate specific viewpoints and personal contexts to create experiential situations in which the viewers can coalesce and commingle in human interactions,” Dr. Bello explains.

Miami has long been recognized as a contemporary art hotspot, with world-class museums, Art Basel, and a vibrant street art scene in Wynwood. With its unique offerings and a resolute spirit, Little Haiti beckons art enthusiasts seeking an authentic and uncharted artistic experience.

Within this vibrant context, the forthcoming exhibition takes center stage. The collection of works embodies the concept proposed by encapsulating the meeting points between different art forms, traditions, perspectives, and global experiences. By exploring the theme of Intercrossing: Flashes in Current Art, the exhibition aims to challenge traditional boundaries and foster dialogues that celebrate diversity, hybridity, and collaboration.

The exhibition will feature works by a diverse mid-career and emerging artists from different countries in the Americas. These artists explore the concept of intercrossing through various mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, collage, video, performance, and materials such as clay, acrylic, aluminum, oil on canvas, and industrial supplies. The artworks on display will challenge viewers to engage with the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of our interconnected world.

Some Analytical Approaches To The Confirmed Artists’ Artworks

Eliana Barbosa (Brazil/USA) — proposes images created through ephemeral photography, captured over shapes delineated by the artist on a liquid surface. These images reflect intense concerns about the current sociopolitical crisis on ecology, racism, and human exploration. @elianabertibarbosa

Magaly Barnola-Otaola (Venezuela/USA) — employs sophisticated technology to explore superhuman archetypes as a hopeful reflection of civilization. The artist utilizes a technique of reversed photography mounted on light boxes, reworking and transposing. Intervened drawings into digital imagery. @magalybarnolaotaola

Ricardo Carbonell (Venezuela) — approaches drawing as an autonomous production. The artwork “Roman Numerals” is constructed through precise strokes and rectilinear lines, forming geometric rhythms that are arranged in numerical orders and positional systems. Using various papers, the artist utilizes monochromatic markers to create linear systemic sets on each individual sheet. These sets are then assembled into a single, large-format unit, resembling a colossal numerical board that evokes the intangible movements of the universe. @ricardocarbonell.art

Francisco Ceron (Colombia) — presents intertextual images with social content, intertwining within the visually turbulent scene and capturing a socio-political revolt in Medellin. The work “Puerto Resistencia” is a digital collage composed of images that provide a broader perspective on the realities of Latin America. @ceronart

Sergio Cesario (Brazil/USA) — offers a series of transformative contemporary photographs in dense combustion and transition from reality and objectivity to fictional realms of reverie. In his Transhuman series, the artist reflects on the dissolution of humanity and its implicit redemption. @art.cesario

Meg Cogburn (USA) — explores the power of the subconscious in her paintings, delving into the realms of dreams and the metaphysical. Her works reveal a profusion of imagery interconnected with symbols of civilization and iconic cultural references, drawing inspiration from both inner and societal sources. @megcogburnart

Sylvia Constantinidis (Argentina/USA) — a music composer, pianist, and visual artist, connects her pictorial creation to her auratic and video compositions. By fusing sounds, music, and images, she creates meaningful passages of time and space, forging a cohesive relationship between different artistic mediums. @sylviaconstantinidis

Clark Medley (USA) — creates an imaginary fusional alphabet, encompassing cultural and social meta-referential paraphrasing of inner dialogues. The shapes in his work evoke a compendium of rich connections to the social graffiti lineage and calligraphies of Japan, China, Hebrew, and Islam. @clark_medley

Milagros Nunez (Venezuela/USA) — presents her Immigrant Series a visual narrative depicting the turbulent process of displaced humans. Women and children take critical roles in her digital works, emphasizing the changes and fractures experienced in this current societal issue. @milarte

Exhibition Opening: Unquestionable Abstraction

 Unquestionable Abstraction
July 29 – August 25, 2023
Opening: Saturday, July 29, 2023, 4:00 – 6:00 PM

Through a nuanced engagement with form, color, and texture, the artists invite the viewer to participate in a multisensory exploration of feeling, embodying a range of affective states from serenity to discomfort. The diverse approaches to abstraction challenge preconceived notions of representation and invite the viewer to engage with the materiality of the artworks to access deeper levels of meaning.

Pushing against social convention, abstract artist LE BohemianMuse creates multifaceted artworks that reflect a story of defiance with a subtle vulnerability through the exposed layers and visible stages of creation. BohemianMuse is a first-generation Ghanaian-American artist from the San Francisco Bay Area. As a self-proclaimed colorist, BohemianMuse works against creative stagnation by placing a focus on textural elements which act as a source of detail, energy, and complexity in place of obvious colors.

German artist Bernhard Zimmer produces layered, subtly textured paintings that contain diametrically opposed elements—order and chaos, abstraction and representation, boldness, and subtlety—in exquisite tension. Working with oil and mixed media on canvas, he paints in color-fields of soft shapes and delicate lines. Full of strength and fragility, Zimmer’s works reward patient viewing, revealing their rich visual nuances to those who take time to delve into their layers of visual emotion.

Abstract minimalist artist Jason DeMeo creates artworks that work to serve as a meditation for the viewer, drawing them toward the timeless concepts of truth, beauty, and goodness. Through his work, he seeks to express universal themes by bringing his eclectic personal experiences, philosophies, and emotions to the forefront. He has a deep belief in the power of art to bring transformation to both spaces and people.

Gail Titus works spontaneously and intuitively without regard to realistic forms, but with a focus on textures, colors, and interesting shapes. She creates artworks by intuitively applying paint to canvas using brushes, scrapers, water bottles, and other objects. As this process continues, certain areas of the painting will start to feel undeveloped. This is when she will methodically rework those areas until the artwork gradually feels resolved.

Heny Steinberg arranges her paintings through a grid or lattice system which is then deconstructed and re-imagined. The shapes within Steinberg’s work transcend their two-dimensional representation and have meaning beyond appearance. Her process begins with concrete images and references, yet over time gives way to her process of decontextualization.

Sarah Johnson infuses passion, heart, and a lifetime of creative experience into each painting. Her radial series exhibits both uninhibited freedom and methodical technique. Through colors, textures, and movement, Johnson’s acrylic paintings on canvas radiate joy with pleasing repetition and form. Each series has a meaningful message, adding both truth and beauty to your walls. Johnson is based in Dallas, Texas and is also a recording musician.

Art Exhibition Opening: About Face

 July 1 – 28, 2023
Opening: Saturday, July 1, 2023, 4:00 – 6:00 PM

Artspace Warehouse presents About Face, a thought-provoking group exhibition that basks in its flatness. Through a curated selection of works that are both physically and visually flat, this show challenges the viewer to consider the role of dimension and depth in our perception of beauty and form. Given the rise of high-quality printers and AI-generated art, flat paintings get misconstrued as artificially created and may even be considered of lesser value without the presence of the artist’s hand. Despite these notions, these artists have perfected their painting techniques, giving rise to a pristine flatness in their work, which can only be achieved with each artist’s individual aplomb.

With an emphasis on geometry and color within his artworks, British artist Paul Westacott takes inspiration from the sunny California landscape to create his abstract paintings. The dialogue between color, form, line, and repetition is the vocabulary that explores visual relationships. The rainy climate of northern England where he grew up shaped his appreciation and captivation with the light and color of Southern California. When creating his works and choosing colors, he seeks to have the colors themselves inspire joy and transformation. In addition to being an artist, Westacott has enjoyed a career as a creative designer in the film and entertainment industries as well as working as a Disney “Imagineer.”

Born in New York in 1964, Jodi Fuchs is an award-winning contemporary abstract painter living in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her education about color and pattern came on the job while working as a decorative painter for 20+ years in Los Angeles. Fuchs creates modern abstract expressionistic pieces that have an undeniable energy. Her medium is acrylic on canvas or panel, and she often uses spray paint, ink, and oil stick to enhance the work. It is Fuchs’ fascination with the pure creative force: understanding it, harnessing it, and expressing it, that fuels her painting process. Years of inquiry into the metaphysical aspects of life have influenced her studio practice.

Experimentation is a central part of Julie Naima’s practice. Naima pulls inspiration from the magical places of the world, both real and fable, experienced in her travels and through her inner child’s imagination. From here, Naima imbues good intentions and positive emotions onto her canvas through her focus on color and shape. Her works are glimpses into her playful imaginary world where Naima invites the viewers to connect with the painting through their emotional response and answer the invitation to a dialogue about hope and happiness. Julie’s work can be found in private collections throughout Canada, Europe, Australia, and the USA.

Will Beger’s contemporary-minimalist paintings take on a new approach to southwest art. Influenced by his youth and inspired by nature, he effortlessly captures a vibrant, bohemian aesthetic that is unapologetically true to his inner child. His modern Southwest artworks feature a mix of mid-century modernism and landscape motifs with an emphasis on desert minimal design. Through stark contrasts between bold, monochromatic backgrounds and subject matter, Beger paints for himself, while also seamlessly connecting with anybody and everybody.

Danny Brown is a first-generation American artist born in Los Angeles. Danny Brown’s artworks allocate an intrinsic connection between himself and the diverse communities occupying Los Angeles. Brown’s art coalesces youth culture, art history, fashion, and American consumerism and melds them all to create his unique style. Instantly relatable and recognizable, his cathartic paintings represent contemporary issues as well as a demographic that is traditionally underrepresented in fine art. Through his experience with graffiti, Brown became fluent in the use of color blocking and translating rougher imagery into something vibrant. His works speak to young Americans and inspire a whole new generation of art collectors and admirers.

Combining her love for abstract art and the act of finding beauty in everyday life, local artist Courtney Simone creates cheerfully inspired abstract figurative artworks. Within her work, she walks the line between relatable day-to-day scenes and the fantastical. Her intuitive mark-makings and stylistic distortion of her female subjects marry the concepts of familiar comfort and discovery. As she creates each distinctive painting, she gives herself permission to explore and play with colors, subject matter, and composition leading to artworks full of joy and whimsy.
