Leukemia Survivor To Meet Lifesaving Donor For First Time At Nashville Predators Hockey Game

Gift of Life Marrow Registry is thrilled to partner with the Predators to share this heartwarming moment with hockey fans during, Hockey Fights Cancer Night.

The donor, a 37-year-old math teacher and wrestling coach from Pomfret, Conn., joined the registry in 2010 at a marrow registry recruitment drive held at Salisbury School, where he was teaching at the time. Ten years later he was found as a match for a 46-year-old man battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a life-threatening blood cancer.

What it comes down to is, are you going to help someone or not? said the donor. It is an amazing feeling to be the person who can help someone else. I am grateful I have had this opportunity.

The blood stem cell recipient was treated and received his transplant in October 2021 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He was diagnosed after experiencing a loss of energy and pain in his mouth. His only hope of a cure was a transplant from a matching donor, who was quickly located in Gift of Lifes registry.

I am thankful to my donor for doing such a service and appreciate this opportunity to thank him, said the recipient. Im curious about his journey to becoming a donor and hope we will develop a friendship in time.

During the game, attendees will be able to visit Gift of Lifes donor recruitment tables in the arena at sections 315 and 118/119 (across from Titos Bar), where Vanderbilt Hillel volunteers and Gift of Life Campus Ambassadors will help explain how easy it is to save the life of a child or adult battling blood cancer. Anyone 18 to 35 and in general good health can join the registry with a simple cheek swab and a short questionnaire.

Today, 90% of donations use blood stem cells, collected from the arm in a process similar to donating blood platelets. Only 10% of transplants use bone marrow, which is collected from the hip bone and is a short outpatient procedure, usually requested for pediatric patients.

Since its start in 1991, Gift of Life Marrow Registry has grown to more than 430,000 individuals who have volunteered to donate blood stem cells or bone marrow to save a life. To date, Gift of Life has facilitated over 25,000 matches for those with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell, and more than 70 other diseases, resulting in more than 4,500 transplants.

Ronald Wagner’s New Book, “Which One Are You,” is a Spellbinding Account of the Author’s Life That Explores the Struggles and Challenges He and His Family Endured

Fulton Books author Ronald Wagner, who resides on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, not far from where the Ice Age–old glaciers once lay, has completed his most recent book, “Which One Are You”: a profound memoir detailing the author’s life from his upbringing on the family farm with his beloved twin brother, and the many trials and adventures they both experienced that forever shaped the men they would become.

Ronald was born a country farm boy, along with twin Roger, into a family of seven kids, being the youngest, in the Pacific Northwest in Centralia, Washington. They ventured and explored the woods, river, and slough bottoms of the one hundred acres where they lived in the far corner of their grandpa’s dairy farm. Growing up was fun having a twin as a best friend, and they adopted who would become their dearest friend, Good Golly. They won a lotto that they could have lived without, and they had to be farmed out to their older siblings and live out of a camper before their world would change forever.

“This story was told with every intention of being honest, to the best of my ability, with the recollections and remembrances of all events and stories told between Roger, Walt, and me (the author),” writes Wagner. “It is written with respect to all characters, fiction or nonfiction, and all situations that were played out. My life journey will reflect on trials, tribulations, hardships, misfortunes, confrontations, accidents, death, and mystery. It will also reflect the fulfillment of happiness above everything and those current relationships as well as the ones that may seem over, which doesn’t mean they’re dead, simply that they aren’t growing.”

Published by Fulton Books, Ronald Wagner’s book is a captivating tale that is sure to take readers on an unforgettable journey as they witness how the author and his family overcome countless trials and obstacles life placed on their path. Expertly paced and deeply personal, Wagner crafts an intimate self-portrait that is sure to remain with his readers long after its conclusion.

Readers who wish to experience this engaging work can purchase “Which One Are You” at select bookstores, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today (March 24) the Wealth for Good in Hong Kong Summit (WGHK) attracted some of the most influential family offices around the world, which further showcases Hong Kong’s appeal as a world-leading international asset and wealth management hub and its long-term future. Organised by the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau and Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK), the summit took place at the Hong Kong Palace Museum and was attended by over 100 key decision makers from global family offices and their professional teams across Hong Kong, the Mainland, North America, Europe, other Asian regions, the Middle East and other parts of the world.

The top-level exclusive summit in Hong Kong gathered a world-class cast of leading figures from the global investment, technology, art, sustainability and philanthropy worlds, to discuss the most pressing issues facing family offices today. The “Wealth for Good” theme captured two critical priorities faced by family offices today: wealth preservation and sustaining long-term growth, coupled with the need to positively impact society and communities. Featured summit panel discussions were Family Office Sharing, Wealth for Tech, Wealth for Philanthropy, Wealth for Green and Wealth for Art. A list of speakers is enclosed in the Annex.

Today the Government also issued a Policy Statement on developing family office businesses in Hong Kong, unveiling eight measures with favourable packages and services aimed at helping family wealth owners establish a presence in Hong Kong. Some of the new measures include a new Capital Investment Entrant Scheme, tax concessions, a new Hong Kong Academy for Wealth Legacy, establishing art storage facilities at the airport and developing Hong Kong as a philanthropic centre.

The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, said, “Under the ‘one country, two systems’ principle, Hong Kong has a common law regime and a regulatory system that aligns perfectly with global standard. Our robust financial markets develop in a stable and orderly way. We have the unique advantage of strong support of the motherland while being closely connected to the world. Our world-class financial infrastructures plus a diversified and efficient capital market that connects the Mainland and the global capital markets put us in the forefront as a leading asset and wealth management hub in the world. At the same time, Hong Kong in recent years has seen solid development in terms of green and sustainable finances, innovation development, art and culture industries as well as philanthropy, making the city an ideal base for global family offices.”

The Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Mr Christopher Hui, said, “We are committed to providing a conducive environment for global family offices to thrive in Hong Kong. A comprehensive set of policy measures is now in place tailored to the holistic and unique needs of family wealth owners. The WGHK marks the start of a new journey, and I am confident we can co-curate with all stakeholders a family office ecosystem that benefits all.”

The Director-General of Investment Promotion at InvestHK, Mr Stephen Phillips, said, “The WGHK will open up a world of new opportunities for family offices from around the globe. Hong Kong’s fast-moving, dynamic business and cultural environment has shaped a unique East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. This aligns well with Hong Kong’s role as a critical bridge, seamlessly connecting the Mainland and global capital markets.”

The WGHK speakers also observed the significant and diverse investment opportunities available to family offices in Hong Kong as it sits at an ideal pan-Asian location and continues to cement its status as Asia’s world city.
