His uncle Dave was in the Army and his uncle Jack served in the Air Force. Mark says, “I’ve never known another family where four brothers were in the four different branches of the Military. It’s quite unique.” Mark’s father-in-law, J Frank Worthen, also served in the army and was a veteran of World War II; he served in Europe where he received the Purple Heart and Silver Star.

Mark had family that served in WWI – Mark’s Grandfather James Roy Moore served in the army; the Civil War – his great-great grandfather, JB Clothier and his two brothers served in the Union Army; War of 1812 – his great, great, great, great grandfather, Artemis Clothier; and the American Revolution – his great, great, great, great, great grandfather Jesse Clothier.

Mark was born in Pueblo, Colorado. At 12 years of age, he moved to Price, Utah where he graduated from Carbon High School and attended the College of Eastern Utah on an academic scholarship for one year before leaving in 1971 to serve a two year Mormon mission to Uruguay for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mark says, “I learned Spanish in order to communicate with the people. Most of my time was spent working with local Church members and finding those who wanted to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Watching people’s lives change was the highlight of my mission.”

Mark returned to Utah to complete his term at the College of Eastern Utah and married his fiancée, Karen on June 7th, 1974. He says, “Mormons marry in the Temple for time and all eternity. She’s mine forever.”

Mark then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah on another academic scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

In 1976, Mark went to work as an accountant in Salt Lake City, Utah, for Arthur Anderson & Co which provided auditing, tax, and consulting services to large corporations.

After working for two years and receiving his CPA, Mark decided to move to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he first started working in the automotive business. Over most of the next 22 years, Mark worked for or owned several new and used car dealerships:

Mark says, “I have a big, wonderful family – 5 children and 16 grandchildren. That’s what it’s all about for me. My firstborn is Emily (Kirt) and her kids are Tanner, Katie and Garrett. Then there’s Ryan (Angela) who has Kathleen, Brandon and Cody. Next is Jessy (Josh) and her children are Will, Lucy and twins Annie and Jack. Jon (Michelle) comes next with Nixon, Ike and Scarlett. And finally Cameron (Rachel) who has twins Maddie and Ollie and he is expecting another son in March 2017! Twins run in my family. My 84 year-old mother is also a twin! I have a beautiful picture on my website of all of us together. They’re my pride and joy.”

Mark recalls, “In the late 1990’s, I went to a Jay Abraham marketing seminar and met Jim Ackerman who was the owner of a marketing company that taught individuals and companies how to increase their sales by implementing innovative marketing ideas. After leaving the car business, Mark went to work for Jim and began doing one-on-one phone coaching calls with clients. Two of his favorite clients were Realtors and Mark became very interested in Real Estate. He loved helping these two Realtors build their businesses.

Mark started buying and selling investment homes. He worked with a local Spokane Real Estate agent. Mark referred clients who needed to list and sell their homes to this agent. Mark quickly realized that this agent was making more money off of him than he was making for himself! So, Mark got his Real Estate license on February 29th, 2000 – Leap Year Day!

Mark went to work as a RE/MAX agent. Deciding that he wanted to jump start his business, Mark went to a Craig Proctor Real Estate Marketing seminar in Canada – Craig was a Real Estate Coach who was one of the top RE/MAX agents in the world. Craig convinced Mark to create the Mark Spear Homeselling Team.

After growing his business and receiving Spokane Association of Realtor’s Top 3 Sales Volume Awards for his Team for 5 years running, Mark made the decision to downsize after the market fell in the late 2000’s.

Mark still works full time and now focuses on repeat business from past clients, friends, family, referrals and new clients that want a more personalized real estate experience.

Mark heard about the Military Relocation Professional (MRP) Certification through the Spokane Association of Realtors. He says, “We’re near Fairchild Air Force Base and I wanted my business to focus on helping Military families and Veterans find nice homes near the base. I have a great respect for our Military, whether they’re coming or going, I want to assist them. They often need help quickly and need someone who knows what they’re doing. I want to be that person.”
