Canada – Death of an inmate from Archambault Institution 

On May 12, 2022, Réjean Michaud, an inmate from Archambault Institution, died while in our custody of apparent natural causes.

On May 12, 2022, Réjean Michaud, an inmate from Archambault Institution, died while in our custody of apparent natural causes.

At the time of death, Mr. Michaud had been serving a 4 years, 11 months and 22 days sentence since January 9, 2021, for sexual related offences (sexual assault and exploitation).

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

Canada – Death of an inmate from Bath Institution – Regional Treatment Centre 

On May 12, 2022, John White, an inmate from Bath Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre died while in our custody of apparent natural causes.

May 13, 2022 – Kingston, Ontario – Correctional Service Canada

On May 12, 2022, John White, an inmate from Bath Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre died while in our custody of apparent natural causes.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which commenced on February 15, 2019, for second degree murder.   

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.  

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances.  CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

Canada – Death of an inmate from Millhaven Institution – Regional Treatment Centre

On April 21, 2022, an inmate from Millhaven Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre died while in our custody following a serious assault. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) cannot share the individual’s name in order to comply with a court-ordered publication ban.

April 22, 2022 – Kingston, Ontario – Correctional Service Canada

On April 21, 2022, an inmate from Millhaven Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre died while in our custody following a serious assault. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) cannot share the individual’s name in order to comply with a court-ordered publication ban.

The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad and CSC are currently investigating the incident.

At the time of death, the inmate was 70 years old, and had been serving a sentence of 4 years for sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and sexual interference with a person under 14 years old, since April 20, 2021. 

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.  

CSC takes the death of an inmate very seriously. At this time, no further information is available while the investigation is underway.

On April 8, 2022, Dany Bernatchez, an inmate from Atlantic Institution, died while in our custody.

April 9, 2022 – Renous, New Brunswick – Correctional Service Canada

On April 8, 2022, Dany Bernatchez, an inmate from Atlantic Institution, died while in our custody.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 13 years and one month since January 19, 2017 for pointing a firearm, disguise with intent, robbery, uttering threats to cause death/harm, assault causing bodily harm, riot, hostage taking, prison breach with violence, break enter and commit, possession of a schedule II substance, prohibited weapon in vehicle, discharge of restricted/prohibited firearm with intent, intimidation of a justice system participant/journalist, failure to comply with probation order, mischief in relation to other property, conspire to commit indictable offence.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which commenced on February 28, 1995, for attempted murder, contempt of court, and second degree murder. 

The inmate’s next of kin has been notified. 

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances.  CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
