Hong Kong – Welcome remarks by SITI at Digital Economy Summit 2023 (English only) (with photo)

Welcome remarks by SITI at Digital Economy Summit 2023 (English only) (with photo)

Following are the welcome remarks by the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong, at the Digital Economy Summit 2023 today (April 13):

尊敬的李家超行政長官 (Chief Executive, Mr John Lee), 尊敬的曹淑敏副主任 (Deputy Director of the Cyberspace Administration of China Ms Cao Shumin), 尊敬的陳冬副主任 (Deputy Minister of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Mr Chen Dong), 尊敬的王秀軍理事長 (President of the China Internet Development Foundation, Ms Wang Xiujun), 楊鵬飛局長 (Party Secretary and Director-General of the Guangdong Provincial Administration of Government Service and Data, Mr Yang Pengfei), distinguished speakers and guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning. Welcome to BIT Week (Business of Innovation and Technology Week) Hong Kong 2023. I am most honoured to welcome you, friends from Hong Kong, the Mainland and around the world, to this year’s Digital Economy Summit 2023.
The two-day Summit has been an annual flagship innovation and technology (I&T) event co-organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) and Cyberport. Themed “Emerging with Resilience: Fostering a Smarter Future”, today’s Summit is a manifestation of our commitment to forging ahead Hong Kong’s digital economy development.
We are delighted to present to you a two-day programme with eight thematic forums and symposium, bringing together over 100 top-notch industry experts and esteemed global thought leaders. I can assure you that you will have ample opportunities to engage in fruitful exchange as well as to foster new business partnerships.
To achieve high-quality economic development, digitalisation is an inevitable trend. On this journey of transformation, I&T is one of the key driving forces. The wider adoption of I&T could revitalise traditional industries, spawn new businesses, foster a diversified economy and create quality employment opportunities in Hong Kong.
This term of Government has accorded high priority to I&T development. We published the Hong Kong I&T Development Blueprint last December, setting out a clear development path and systematic strategic planning for Hong Kong’s I&T development over the next five to 10 years. In particular, one of the key directions is to promote digital economy development and develop Hong Kong into a smart city. We will continue to roll out more initiatives in spearheading the development of our digital economy and smart city.
Last month, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, MOST in short, and I signed the “Arrangement between the Mainland and Hong Kong on Expediting the Development of Hong Kong into an International Innovation and Technology Centre” in Beijing in the presence of the Chief Executive and the Minister of MOST. It is certainly a new milestone for the I&T co-operation between the Mainland and Hong Kong. I am confident that this would further inject new impetus to our development into an international I&T centre.
Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Cyberport, all the co-organisers and partners, as well as my colleagues in OGCIO, for bringing this year’s extraordinary Summit to us all. I wish you all a most inspiring experience at the Summit. Thank you very much.

Canada – Canadians continue to welcome Afghan refugees in their communities

The Government of Canada is working hard to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals as quickly and safely as possible. Over the past week, 335 government-assisted and privately sponsored Afghan refugees arrived in Canada on 10 commercial flights. They are destined for communities all across Canada, including Calgary, Winnipeg and Sherbrooke. To date, a total of 7,885 Afghan nationals have arrived in Canada.

February 18, 2022—Ottawa – The Government of Canada is working hard to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals as quickly and safely as possible.

Arrivals include refugees approved through the special immigration program for Afghans who assisted the Government of Canada, privately sponsored refugees, and refugees referred by the United States, Front Line Defenders and the United Nations Refugee Agency.

Canadians have played an active role in welcoming Afghan refugees in their communities. Since August 2021, Canadians have given more than $1 million; have donated over 200,000 goods, including children’s toys, clothing, and personal care products; and have opened their homes with more than 5,000 offers of temporary accommodations. The Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS), a Resettlement Assistance Program service provider (RAP SPO) in Calgary, is coordinating volunteers and donations on behalf of all 34 RAP SPOs across Canada that are welcoming Afghan refugees into their communities.

Examples of the many charitable gestures include:

The Afghan Network for Social Services, a Toronto non-profit organization, donated 62 children’s gift baskets and 200 articles of children’s clothing to Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services.
The people of Newfoundland and Labrador responded to news of Afghan arrivals with generous donations of clothing, household items and gift cards to the Association for New Canadians. With the help of corporate donations, the total value of donations has grown to over $100,000 to date.

The resettlement of Afghan refugees is a whole-of-country initiative. Individuals and businesses looking to get involved through volunteering, donating, sponsoring or supporting the wider resettlement efforts can learn more about how Canadians can help.

Photos of previous arrivals are available in Dropbox for use by media. You can also monitor Canada’s progress on welcoming Afghan refugees to Canada.

“It has been heartwarming to watch communities welcome Afghan refugees. Over the past several months, Canadians across the country have stepped up to provide a warm welcome to some of the world’s most vulnerable, and their generosity through donations and volunteering continues to be truly remarkable.”

– The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

“For 40 years, CCIS has been honoured to play a role in Canada’s commitment to helping over one million refugees and watch them become contributing members of their communities and proud Canadians. As someone who came to this country as a refugee, I can understand the gratitude and appreciation that many Afghans and other refugees are feeling toward the generosity and kindness of Canadians.”

If you’ve listened to every Radiohead album, single, live show, or demo; if you’ve seen every video, blip, or webcast; if you’ve spent hours scrolling through the Radiohead Public Library’s artwork, lyrics, dead-air, and Minotaurs, you still aren’t prepared for KID A MNESIA EXHIBITION. I have. I wasn’t.

I’m one of those Radiohead fans. The type who knows the lyrics to their songs before they’re officially released, but even I was surprised by the dark, playful exploration of the exhibition. It’s a collection of rooms, corridors, and spaces inspired by and filled with music and art from the recent KID A MNESIA release. That includes re-releases of Kid A and Amnesia, albums from over two decades ago, joined by Kid Amnesiae, “a memory palace of half-remembered, half-forgotten sessions & unreleased material.”

This is a strange place. You stumble through a sketched out forest towards a red door. Inside, welcoming you, is a corridor of flickering, smearing walls. Up close, those walls are made of RGB pixels. All around you, Everything In Its Right Place seems to endlessly remix itself. Throughout the exhibition, Radiohead’s music will rebuild itself around you.

I have a mental map of every note, every breath on Kid A and Amnesia, but I still got lost in the weird, Ballardian space of the exhibition’s halls. Art sits in frames, but it’s also scratched into walls, or brought to life as towering panoramas. At one point, I was abducted by three songs and left to float amidst crumbling artworks until the final chord. And then…

No, wait. That’s enough from me. There are surprises at every turn that you should experience without a guide. Explore the KID A MNESIA EXHIBITION yourself. Take it slow. You’re here. This is happening.

KID A MNESIA EXHIBITION is out now for free on Epic Games Store.
