DENSO CORPORATION and other partners have been chosen by an industry-government-academia collaborative project aiming to expand the recycle content for automobile in the fiscal year 2023 supported by Ministry of the Environment, Japan. The project, titled “Demonstration of Manufacturing-and-Recycling Integrated Process for Horizontal Cycle* Enabled by Automated Sophisticated Dismantling of ELVs, (end-of-life vehicles)” has begun in early March and is scheduled to conclude by the end of January 2025.
Project participants include REVER CORPORATION, DIC Corporation, UACJ Corporation, Kaneshiro Sangyou, KYUSHU METAL INDUSTRY CO., LTD., SUMITOMO CHEMICAL COMPANY, Daido Steel Co., Ltd., Toray Industries, Inc., Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd., TOYOTA BOSHOKU CORPORATION, Nomura Research Institute, Ltd., Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., MATEC Inc., Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., Waseda University, and others.
In recent years, the automotive industry has sought to transition to a circular economy to achieve a more sustainable society. In the effort, it is necessary to significantly expand the use of recycled materials in automotive products, helping reduce the need for freshly cultivated natural resources.
Even so, current global processes often involve shredding ELVs and separating the remaining materials for use in recycled products, a process that can make acquiring high-purity material a challenge. Further compounding the issue is a lack of shared standards between the manufacturing and recycling industries. Moreover, the recycling industry responsible for ELV processing faces business challenges such as severe labor shortages and the need to optimize work environments. Addressing these challenges requires a shift towards new processing methods for ELVs that not only solve these issues but also ensure the quality and quantity of recycled materials.
In this project, participating companies such as ELV dismantling and shredding operators, dismantling system providers, material manufacturers, automotive parts manufacturers, and research institutions are collaborating to realize a new ELV processing method based on automated sophisticated dismantling and conduct a technology demonstration of an integrated process.
Through this demonstration, the group will identify the challenges involved in implementing this integrated ecosystem that combines manufacturing and recycling industries within society. Specifically, the project will include the technology demonstration of the automated sophisticated dismantling process, the high-purity and re-resource processes for various materials extracted through advanced dismantling, and the prototyping and evaluation of parts made from these recycled materials. Additionally, the project will verify the sustainability of the whole process, evaluating how much carbon output it can reduce compared to current processes.
We will aim to contribute to the expansion of recycled materials in automotive parts and the realization of a circular economy in the automotive industry through this demonstration.

In anew business briefpublished today by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)Switch project, companies ABB, Accenture, Eaton and Schneider Electric, together with the BASE Foundation, Climate Group, Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) and Integrate to Zero explain how integrating decarbonization solutions presents a fast lane to net zero operations.
The technology behind decarbonization ismaturing quickly and becoming increasingly competitiveamid fossil fuel price volatility.Half of the worlds largest companies have set public net-zero emissions goals, with commitments up by more than 40% since 2022.
As shown in the brief published today, when businesses bundle and integrate decarbonization solutions, they unlock synergies and larger environmental and financial benefits, charting a faster course to ambitious renewable goals. Integrated approaches canreduce operational emissions by up to 50%, secure energy supply and optimize returns on capital investment and the risk profile of technology adoption.
Integrated decarbonization will require equally integrated business decarbonization strategies, aligning investment decisions with environmental targets and new revenue models, and coordinated policies to link building and transport technologies with the grid.
Government and business leaders will convene for COP 28 in a few days to determine the next urgent steps on the global race to net zero. They must recognize integrated approaches as a cornerstone of global decarbonization efforts, particularly in critical discussions on investment and policy frameworks needed totriple the capacity of renewable energy sources and double energy efficiency by 2030.
Anke Hampel, Group Head of Sustainability, ABB, said: Ahead of COP 28, it is important to remember that the solutions and technology that can get us to net-zero are within reach for businesses. We call on businesses and governments to approach sustainability holistically and review financing and governance models that can accelerate the implementation of sustainability roadmaps.
Companies need to switch to net-zero operations to deliver on ambitious net-zero targets. An integrated net-zero pathway will help industrial leaders get there faster and roll out decarbonization strategies at scale. We stand with our Switch partners to help companies in accelerating global decarbonization efforts, and we will continue to do so through state-of-the-art carbon modeling incl. an integrated carbon modeling tool and holistic net-zero strategies, saidWytse Kaastra,LeadAccentureSustainability Services Europe and Utilities sector lead Europe.
With our partners in the WBCSD Switch project, we invite business leaders from around the world to reduce their carbon emissions and energy costs by focusing on demand-side flexibility, energy resilience, and self-sufficiency to transform their buildings and facilities into integrated energy hubs, highlightedTim Darkes, President, Corporate and Electrical Sector EMEA, Eaton.
Vanessa Miler-Fels, VP Global Environment, Schneider Electric, said: Business leaders have a clear, practical path to decarbonization: digital and electrification. But bold steps are needed to make this a reality, starting with embedding sustainability in all operations and preparing grids as the essential backbone to the energy transition.
Integrated energy is the next frontier of corporate decarbonization. Combining on-site, on-grid, and on-road solutions will reduce emissions and save money. It also provides companies energy security as theyd be far less impacted by the volatile fossil fuel markets, it builds business resilience, and opens up the potential for future revenue streams. Climate Group supports WBCSD in scoping out the corporate demand for these innovations and accelerate action in this crucial area. commentedHelen Clarkson, CEO, Climate Group.
Vincent-Michel Duval, Executive Director, GSEP,said: The electrified, zero-carbon technologies needed to rapidly decarbonize not only exist, but they are mature and scalable. Adopting an integrated approach can go a long way in catalyzing the swift decarbonization needed to achieve climate targets and unlock further benefits for businesses and society, ranging from improved efficiency to energy security. GSEP is delighted to have contributed our unique perspective on the importance of electrified solutions to this initiative.
[p”Integrating distributed renewable energy resources on-site, on-road, on-grid creates a larger, cleaner more resilient power system, quickly, at lower cost to utilities and with huge business benefits. saidDan Hamza-Goodacre, Founder and Chief Energy Officer, Integrate to Zero.[/p]
Thomas Deloison, Director, Mobility, WBCSD, said: Business leaders must seize the integrated decarbonization opportunity not only to play their part in the global race to net zero, but also to realize that low carbon technologies create value for society, the planet and balance sheets. We are delighted to release the result of work conducted by a unique group of like-minded businesses and partners forming the Switch project.
Businesses and partners of the WBCSD Switch project mobilize projects, build and share best practices, and advocate for the adoption of integrated approaches in leading events. For more information, consult our website or contact Thomas Deloison, WBCSD atdeloison@wbcsd.org.

Sporadic firmware updates, inadequate endpoint protection, and inaccurate asset databases harm enterprise security and efficiency
PALO ALTO, Calif. – WEBWIRE – Monday, October 2, 2023
HP Inc. (NYSE: HPQ) announced the findings of a new commissioned study, conducted by Forrester Consulting, highlighting the need for companies to adopt always-on endpoint management to cater for increasingly dispersed global workforces.
72% of companies surveyed currently have a hybrid working model, with 75% of respondents reporting that the shift to remote and hybrid working models has magnified IT operational challenges.1
Forrester Consultings survey of 312 IT and security decision makers shows that companies are struggling to balance asset management, user experience assurance, and risk management.
Key findings in the 2023 study, Mastering Endpoint Security In A Hybrid World, include:
The top challenges companies face when managing remote endpoints are ensuring data security (60%); keeping software on remote devices up to date (55%); and maximizing the accuracy of asset databases (55%).
Just42% of companies perform firmware updates annually, 23% update every two years or less, and 12% only update when essential putting firms at risk of security vulnerabilities and compatibility issues.
Two-thirds (67%) of respondents say ensuring secure and continuous communication with remote endpoints is a major concern for their companys IT department.
IT is having to rely on subpar protection, with 50% citing inadequate endpoint security solutions as an obstacle to addressing security and management challenges. Meanwhile, 54% believe full-disk encryption provides substantial protection for endpoints but acknowledge it can be insufficient. For example, if the attacker has physical access to the device.
Dr. Ian Pratt, Global Head of Security for Personal Systems at HP Inc., comments:
The flexibility of being able to work and hire employees all over the world is one of the many benefits of living in a digital economy. Yet as the workplace evolves, security must too. To offer secure, efficient, and user-friendly IT experiences in the future, companies will need an always-on endpoint management infrastructure that can support this new way of working.
Always-on connectivity is the lynchpin of comprehensive endpoint management
In considering how these challenges may be overcome, 75% of respondents believe improved endpoint management would have a positive impact on overall business operations and efficiency.
Companies cited a need for more efficient endpoint software tracking and management (48%). To achieve this, respondents want device backup and restore capabilities (55%), automation of device recovery processes (47%), BIOS update deployment (46%), and device location tracking (46%).
To enhance remote endpoint security and management, 82% of respondents are also considering investment in solutions that can geo-locate, lock, and erase PCs remotely.
Solutions such as HP Wolf Protect and Trace2with HP Wolf Connect, once available, will be able to locate, lock and erase a PC remotely, even when its turned off or disconnected from the internet.3
An always-on approach to fleet management is vital to creating a secure device life cycle and optimizing distributed working environments. Continuous endpoint monitoring and real-time device management will help companies to protect sensitive data on the move and lower IT costs by reducing PC remediation or replacements, concludes Dr. Pratt.
