By: Orang Utan Republik Foundation, Inc.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.Sept. 20, 2023PRLog — The Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) and actor/environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr. and NBC weathercaster Dagmar Midcap will honor environmental achievement, activism, advocacy, and orangutan conservation at the 9th Annual Pongo Environmental Awards to be held on held from on Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 5-9 p.m. at the Building Bridges Art Exchange located at the iconic Bergamot Station Art Center in Santa Monica, CA.

This year’s Pongo Environmental Awards will feature an intimate talk from James Balog, sharing his thoughts and stunning images of biodiversity and our dramatically changing planet. The Pongo Awards, presented by the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF), bring together local and global conservationists for an evening of advocacy and entertainment.

Previous honorees have included Dr. Jane Goodall, James Cameron’s “Years of Living Dangerously”; Netflix and their groundbreaking series, “Our Planet”; Louie Psihoyos for “Racing Extinction”; “Guardians of Life” starring Joaquin Phoenix; global climate advocate; Climatologist Michael Mann; Mongabay, and CEO and founder Rhett Butler, an award-winning source of environmental news reporting; NGOs Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, and Rainforest Trust, among others.
The Pongo Environmental Awards, presented by the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF), have a dual (or twofold) purpose: to raise funds for OURF’s crucial work to save wild, critically endangered orangutans from extinction and to honor those who have made significant contributions to understanding and appreciating orangutans, endangered species, rainforest habitat, and improving conditions for orangutans and other animals.
This year’s recipients of the 9th Annual Pongo Environmental Awards include:

● James Balog (Earth Vision Institute): Balog is a scientist, photographer, filmmaker, and author with decades of work capturing stunning images of the changes to our fragile planet.
● Heal the Bay: being honored for their impressive four decades of environmental advocacy, science, education, and protecting the coastal waters in the Greater Los Angeles area.
● Forum Konservasi Leuser: honoring the organization and their local leadership for years of effective environmental activism, and conservation of the Leuser Ecosystem in Aceh, Sumatra.

The theme of this year’s fundraiser, which is open to the public, is “Biodiversity Matters – Our LIVES Depend on It.” This theme emphasizes the urgent need to take action to prevent ecosystem collapse. We can no longer wait. Indonesia, which makes up only 1.3% of the world’s land surface, is a hotspot of biodiversity, hosting 17% of the world’s bird species, 16% of the world’s reptiles, 12% of the world’s mammals, and 10% of the world’s flowering species. According to World Wildlife Fund, the world has seen an average 68% drop in mammal, bird, fish, reptile, and amphibian populations since 1970. Much of the loss is caused by habitat destruction due to unsustainable agriculture or logging.

This year’s event, open to the public, will include Balinese dance performances from Krama Bali LA, and guests will have the opportunity to enjoy wine and gourmet vegan/vegetarian Indonesian cuisine. Additionally, there will be a special live and silent auction featuring rare sports, music, and entertainment collectibles. This collection will include signed treasures from Springsteen, the Eagles, McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Star Wars & Lionel Messi, and others. Tickets to attend the awards are available to the public at http://pongoawards.org.

New MLTSS Association Report Outlines Opportunities for MCOs to Support the Direct Care Workforce

WASHINGTONSept. 20, 2023PRLog — A new report from the National MLTSS Health Plan Association (MLTSS Association) provides a novel framework for how states with managed long-term services and supports (MLTSS) programs and the federal government can leverage the role of MLTSS managed care organizations (MCOs) to bolster the direct care workforce (DCW).

Despite increased demand for long-term services and supports (LTSS), a shortage of direct care workers remains a significant challenge for individuals needing LTSS, states, MCOs, providers, and workers themselves. Between 2020 and 2030, 7.9 million new and existing direct care positions will need to be filled. As a result, individuals with disabilities are waiting longer, receiving lower quality services, and relying more on informal caregivers for the supports they need.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the Direct Care Workforce shortage and illuminated existing barriers to recruitment and retention, including low wages and limited career development opportunities,” said MLTSS Association Board Chair Chris Palmieri, President and CEO of Commonwealth Care Alliance. “Given the enormity and urgency of this crisis, the message was clear at last year’s MLTSS Leadership Summit – the Association must lead the conversation and create policy solutions to address these workforce challenges.”

In response, in January 2023, the MLTSS Association launched a DCW Workgroup with member health plans charged with offering a unique MCO lens on opportunities to address the direct care worker shortage, including how MCOs can be effective partners in designing and implementing solutions. In its new report, titled “Strengthening the Direct Care Workforce: A Framework for Leveraging the Role of MLTSS MCOs to Address the Workforce Crisis,” the workgroup identifies emerging promising practices for MLTSS MCOs and providers to optimize the direct care workforce, as well as policy solutions for states and the federal government to facilitate and scale these practices more broadly.

“MCOs are directly connected to their established Provider Networks and have many assets—whether it’s data, thought leadership, and/or financial—to contribute, making them well-positioned to strengthen broader efforts at the local, state, and federal levels,” noted DCW Workgroup Co-Chair Rachel Turner Chinetti of Elevance Health. “This is most effective when done in collaboration with other MCOs. It is critical that MCOs step up to take action and share responsibility with other stakeholders to collectively offer new and innovative solutions on how to support the direct care workforce.”

The Association’s framework includes five key domains for policy solutions: Recruitment, Retention, Data Collection, Workforce Alternatives, and Elevating the Social Value of DCW’s Impact, with informal caregivers, technology, and flexible funding models braided across all domains. The report also outlines eight key principles underpinning the framework to ensure successful implementation: Collaboration & Shared Responsibility; Alignment with Local, State, and Federal Initiatives; Centering the DCW Voice; Equity; Person-Centered Planning; Informal Caregivers; Technology; and Flexible Funding Models.

“I commend the MLTSS Association for its leadership and vision in developing this comprehensive framework for how MCOs can have a meaningful impact on strengthening the direct care workforce, including workforce alternatives that value and prioritize opportunities for independence and supports that help to empower independence in the lives of those we serve,” remarked Patti Killingsworth, former Chief of LTSS at TennCare and current Chief Strategy Officer at Carebridge Health. “It is significant to see a health plan association come forward with a call to action for MCOs to invest in and collaborate on workforce solutions in partnership with states and providers. I strongly urge all relevant groups, particularly state LTSS leaders, to review the rich information and actionable solutions outlined in this report.”

HOPE fills the Seaside Heights boardwalk for the tenth straight year

HOPE Sheds Light’s annual Celebration of HOPE walk provides hope and support to families at the Jersey Shore that are impacted by substance use disorder.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J.Sept. 20, 2023PRLog — A decade later and hope is stronger than ever. The 10th Annual Celebration of HOPE Walk, hosted by HOPE Sheds Light (HSL), brought nearly 2,000 individuals and families to the Seaside Heights Boardwalk on September 9th to learn about substance use disorder, celebrate recovery and provide hope to those affected.

The day was filled with balloon art, face painting, vendor displays, musical interludes, inspirational stories and lots of love for those who were lost from substance use disorder and those in recovery. The day’s top fundraising teams were Grateful Dan in first place and Team FWH/Trident in second.

The walk was organized by Pamela Capaci, CEO of HSL, Nancy Moore, Family Services Coordinator of HSL, and Emily Hendricks, Program Director of HSL.

“Those impacted by substance use disorder typically don’t know where to turn for help,” said Moore. “HOPE Sheds light offers these individuals a community to lean on. We are stronger together than we could ever be walking this journey alone.”

After a few opening words from HSL Co-founder Steve Willis, a host of dignitaries and guest speakers who have been impacted by addiction took the stage. Dignitaries included: Sgt. Melissa Rose of the Ocean County Prosecutors Office and Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Lindsay Ashwal.

Hendricks had the honor of cutting the start ribbon to kick of the walk. “This was such a special moment that I will treasure forever,” she said. “I walked to show that anyone can stop using, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live with the help of each other. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this special day with us.”

HSL was started after Ron Rosetto lost his son, Marc to a hard-fought battle against substance abuse disorder. When the Rosetto family was going through this very difficult time, they struggled to find the help they so desperately needed. Since the family and friends of those with addiction problems often feel isolated, ashamed, overwhelmed and hopeless, Ron, alongside friends Stephen Willis and Arvo Prima, whose sons also were battling addiction at the time, founded HSL. Shortly after, Stephen’s son, Mark lost his battle with the disease of addiction. A few years later, Arvo’s son, Paavo lost his fight with the disease.

Ron, Stephen and Arvo have since dedicated their lives to keeping their sons’ legacy alive by helping others find the courage to face addiction and find recovery.

During the event, the three co-founder shared their personal stories. “Addiction is a disease that consumes everyone close to the person suffering. We all need help, and we all need each other for support to recover. God speaks through people,” noted Prima. “This organization has changed my life in many wonderful ways because it continues to teach and keep me connected to my recovery and my family’s well-being,” stated Willis. “We are here to not only honor the people we lost, but to honor the people standing here today in recovery. Today we celebrate life,” proclaimed Rosetto.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, HSL continues to grow and evolve, raising awareness and educating individuals, families and the community about the impact of substance use disorder in Ocean and Monmouth Counties and beyond. Through peer-to-peer coaching and support groups, wellness programs and educational programs for the whole family, HSL strives to reduce stigma in order to make way for new outcomes.

Capaci offered her appreciation to the entire community, as well as the HSL team for their unwavering support through the years. “We started out as a grassroots effort, and today, ten years later, we stand firm on our mission driven decision to serve the community,” she said. “HOPE’s growth means that more and more people each day are being served with love and coached toward recovery. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

The New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit (FIU) showcased a mock crime scene highlighting OSCR360 and other technology the department utilizes to solve cases.

The New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit (FIU) consists of members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and operates out of nine field offices across the state. The FIU is responsible for assisting NY law enforcement agencies in the processing of crime scene evidence and fingerprint examination at major scenes, including homicides, suspicious deaths, and robberies. From specialized techniques to cutting-edge technology, NYS FIUs are called upon to thoroughly process and investigate crime scenes and present critical evidence in the courtroom.

At the 2023 New York State Fair, the New York State Police exhibited roll-over simulations, underwater recovery team demonstrations, canine bomb disposal demonstrations, and special operations response team demonstrations. The FIU displayed a realistic mock crime scene for visitors to observe, complete with a homicide victim dummy, crime scene investigator dummies, evidence markers, evidence processing equipment, and the OSCR360 camera and tripod. The L-Tron team was happy to drive to Syracuse to lend several OSCR360 cameras, an OSCR360 poster, and some enlarged QR codes for spectators to learn more about the system.

OSCR360 captures 360-degree images from crime, crash, and fire scenes and incorporates additional digital evidence into the photographs as Points of Interest, creating a comprehensive virtual walkthrough of the scene.

Throughout an investigation and continuing into the courtroom, OSCR360 leaves no detail to the imagination. Hundreds of agencies across the country are using OSCR360 to document, store, organize and present critical details during investigations. In addition to investigations and courtroom prosecution, OSCR360 (https://www.L-Tron.com/OSCR360) plays an instrumental role in creating active shooter and emergency preparedness plans, as well as training law enforcement officers and criminal justice students.
