मैक्स स्मार्ट सुपर स्पेशलिटी, साकेत के पल्मोनोलॉजी विभाग के एसोसिएट डायरेक्टर और लंग ट्रांसप्लांट मेडिसिन के प्रमुख डॉ. विवेक सिंह ने कहा, ‘‘देश में वायु प्रदूषण के बढ़ने के कारण सभी लोगों का स्वास्थ्य गंभीर रूप से प्रभावित हो रहा है। विषेशकर बच्चों के लिए यह स्थिति अधिक चिंताजनक है क्योंकि इसका सामना करने के लिए उनके महत्वपूर्ण अंग पर्याप्त रूप से परिपक्व नहीं होते हैं। यह बच्चों में उनकी प्रतिरक्षा प्रणाली को भी नष्ट कर देता है और संक्रमण, छींक आने और सांस में घरघराहट जैसी समस्याएं पैदा करता है। सांस से संबिंधत समस्याओं का पता लगाने के लिए पल्मोनरी फंक्शन टेस्ट (पीएफटी) किया जाता है जिससे यह पता चलता है कि फेफड़ों में कितनी हवा रह सकती है, कोई व्यक्ति अपने फेफड़ों से कितनी जल्दी हवा को अंदर और बाहर ले जा सकता है, और फेफड़े कितनी अच्छी तरह से ऑक्सीजन लेते हैं और शरीर से कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड बाहर निकालते हैं। इस जांच से फेफड़ों की बीमारियों का भी पता लगाया जा सकता है और इसकी गंभीरता को मापा जा सकता है। पीएफटी की रिपोर्ट खराब आने का मतलब है कि फेफड़े की कार्यक्षमता और पल्मोरनी रोग होने की अधिक संभावनाएं हैं।’’

डॉ. सिंह ने कहा, ’’पीएम 2.5 का बढ़ना अधिक उम्र के लोगों के लिए समस्या पैदा करता है। इसके कारण 5 साल से कम उम्र के बच्चों में सांस लेने में तकलीफ होने लगती है क्योंकि इसके कारण उनका इम्यून सिस्टम खराब हो जाता है। जबकि बुजुर्गों को सीने में जकड़न, साइनुसाइटिस, अस्थमा और सांस लेने में कठिनाई की शिकायत होती है। चूंकि पीएम 2.5 अत्यंत बारीक होता है, इसलिए यह बच्चों के विकसित हो रहे फेफड़ों में बैठ सकता है और अस्थमा और अन्य श्वसन समस्याओं को और बदतर कर सकता है।’’
