River Valley Smile Center’s Successful Mission in Jamaica

River Valley Smile Center is pleased to announce the successful completion of its 22nd annual humanitarian trip to Jamaica. Led by Dr. Charles Liggett, a dedicated team of dental professionals embarked on a mission to provide essential dental care to underprivileged communities in Jamaica.

During the trip, Dr. Liggett and members of the team tirelessly worked to improve oral health outcomes for hundreds of individuals in need. With unwavering dedication, they conducted numerous dental extractions, ensuring that patients received necessary treatment to alleviate pain and improve overall oral health.

Additionally, the hygienists worked tirelessly, providing thorough cleanings to countless patients, promoting preventive dental care and hygiene practices to foster long-term oral health.

In line with their commitment to restoring smiles and confidence, the team at River Valley Smile Center also crafted approximately 100 dentures, transforming the lives of individuals who had been living with missing teeth.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Ligett expressed his gratitude, stating, “We made a lot of people very happy. We had an amazing time and can’t wait until next year!”

The humanitarian trip to Jamaica underscores River Valley Smile Center’s ongoing dedication to serving communities in need, both locally and internationally. By providing essential dental care and restoring smiles, the practice continues to embody its commitment to improving oral health and overall well-being.

Valley businesses champion annual Grow A Reader virtual book drive

The initiative helps Phoenix children and families build home libraries.

Southwest Human Development Grow a Reader

Southwest Human Development Grow a Reader

PHOENIXApril 10, 2023PRLog — Local businesses are partnering with Southwest Human Development, Arizona’s largest nonprofit for early childhood development, to “feed the need to read” throughout the month of May by participating in the nonprofit’s Grow A Reader virtual book drive.

For families who struggle to make ends meet, purchasing new, high-quality children’s books simply does not compete with priorities like providing food, clothing and shelter. In low-income communities, three out of every five children don’t have a single children’s book to call their own.

“Children without access to early literacy materials often face challenges as they enter school,” says Jake Adams, chief development officer for Southwest Human Development. “Our partners’ support of our early literacy efforts through this annual drive better prepares thousands of children for success when they enter kindergarten.”

Donating to the Grow A Reader virtual book drive is simple. People can visit a participating Grow A Reader business location, “pick a flower” and purchase books online at swhd.org/GAR to help get children’s books into the hands of kids who need them most. Books start at only $3.99 and are also eligible for a dollar-for-dollar Arizona Charitable Tax Credit of up to $800.

This year’s participating Grow A Reader partners include Arizona Central Credit Union, Century 21 Arizona Foothills, Charro Hipster, CVL Consultants, El Chullo, GM, Lane Terralever, Short Leash Hotdogs and The Joint Chiropractic.

Two of the restaurant partners will host special events in support of Grow A Reader. On Wednesday, May 3, El Chullo will host a happy hour with musical performers at their new location at 4414 N. Seventh Avenue in Phoenix. On Friday, May 19, Short Leash Hotdogs located at 4221 N. Seventh Avenue will host a live music happy hour. Both events are free to attend and open to the public.

Donated books from the Grow A Reader campaign are distributed to families in need who participate in Southwest Human Development’s early literacy programs like Raising A Reader. This program focuses on strengthening family literacy routines and community literacy connections. Additionally, donated books support Reach Out and Read, a national, evidence-based program that promotes early literacy in pediatric offices.

To learn more about becoming a Grow A Reader partner or to donate books, please visit swhd.org/GAR (http://www.swhd.org/gar).

Delaware Valley Independent Pharmacy PMC is Commended for Their Role in Combatting the Opioid Crisis

Delaware Valley Independent Pharmacy PMC has seen nearly 20 years of the Opioid Epidemic. They are helping legitimate chronic pain patients to navigate the course of guidelines and stigma to have reliable access to medication that’s being regulated under the Opioid Epidemic. Many of PMC’s customers are homebound and/or non-ambulatory and battling other real challenges like healthcare equity. Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, PA1, commended PMC Pharmacy on the floor of the House of Representatives for their “tireless efforts in combating the nation’s opioid epidemic while balancing the need to serve patients with chronic pain.”

Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, PA1, commended PMC Pharmacy on the floor of the House of Representatives for their “tireless efforts in combating the nation’s opioid epidemic while balancing the need to serve patients with chronic pain.” The recognition comes after more than 18 years of being on the front lines of the problem. President and CEO of PMC Brian Dunleavy remarked, “I am so very proud of our team here at PMC Pharmacy. Working in a pharmacy setting can, at times, be thankless work. Accolades like this are wonderful, but we don’t do what we do for recognition. We do it out of a sense of obligation and desire to serve those in need. We are extremely grateful for this honor and we are so thankful to have the privilege of serving a population that is marginalized and often ignored.”

The Opioid Crisis has been decades in the making and PMC has seen all of it. The first wave began with increased prescribing of opioids in the 1990s, with overdose deaths involving prescription opioids (natural and semi-synthetic opioids and methadone) increasing since at least 1999. The second wave began in 2010, with rapid increases in overdose deaths involving heroin. – CDC

Where corporate retail pharmacies fail, PMC succeeds in guiding customers to demonstrate adherence to their prescribed medication therapy. PMC supports the licensed and credentialed practitioners in their effort to show continuity of care. PMC has worked with Mr. Fitzpatrick’s office to advocate for chronic pain patients against the egregious fees of Pharmacy Benefit Managers, PBMs, and regulatory guidance that causes patients to go without. Chronic pain patients struggle to navigate regulatory obstacles as well as the social stigma that comes with reliance on opioids to function on a daily basis. Many of PMC’s customers are homebound and/or non-ambulatory and battling other real challenges like healthcare equity.

PMC Pharmacy is a Prescription Management Company serving Patients, Providers, Medical At Home, and Long Term Care Facilities in the Delaware Valley.
