The quake’s center was tape-recorded at a depth of 14 kilometers, about 27 kilometers from the oil town of Mene Grande in Zulia state, USGS stated. Mene Grande lies almost 600 kilometers west of Caracas in a sparsely inhabited area.

The Colombian Geological Survey taped the trembling at 6.1 magnitude, explaining it as a “shallow depth” quake centered near Mene Grande. The shaking was felt beyond Venezuela, reaching parts of Colombia and the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire, according to a report by the Deutsch Welle.

Hours later, a second quake measuring 5.8 was reported by USGS in the same area, about 28 kilometers from Mene Grande.

People lined for groceries scurried to safety as the earthquake struck, as items from shop’s shelves fell down. News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos shared online.

Another video shared by risk management consulting firm ESPICIGEST showed a church’s spire being damaged due to the earthquake.

Powerful tremors are rare in Venezuela, but Wednesday’s 6.3-magnitude quake sent shockwaves across the country, rattling buildings and sparking panic in cities like Caracas and Maracaibo. Roughly 80% of Venezuelans live in areas prone to seismic activity, yet the nation has largely avoided major quakes in recent decades. The last significant disaster struck in 1997, when a quake in Cariaco, Sucre state, claimed 73 lives. The memory of Caracas’ 1976 catastrophe still lingers, when nearly 300 people died and around 2,000 were injured.
