Sri Lanka’s parliament on Wednesday voted to cut benefits and opportunities accorded to previous presidents or their widows, as the judgment National People’s Power attempts to keep its survey promise of removing corruption and slashing extreme state expense.
Passed with a two-thirds bulk– that the judgment union delights in– the vote rescinded the Presidents’ Entitlements Act, a 1986 law that enabled arrangement of a house or a regular monthly allowance, secretarial allowance, main transportation, to a previous President or the widow of a previous President; and regular monthly pension paid to the widow of a previous President.

It came a day after Parliamentary Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne notified your home of the Supreme Court’s decision– half a lots petitions looked for to challenge the federal government’s transfer to reverse the law– that the President’s Entitlements (Repeal) Bill did not breach the Constitution, which a basic bulk would be enough to enact it.
“We are reversing the 1986 Act to conserve taxpayers’ cash,” Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara informed Parliament.
The law will be instantly suitable to Sri Lanka’s 5 living previous presidents– Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maithripala Sirisena, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and Ranil Wickremesinghe– and Hema Premadasa, spouse of late Ranasinghe Premadasa.
Regional media reports stated Mahinda Rajapaksa would likely abandon his estate quickly.
