Amitabh Bachchan, 82, has opened up about the challenges of ageing, admitting that everyday tasks now require more effort and care. In a recent blog post written after his Sunday meet with fans on August 17, the veteran actor revealed that doctors have advised him to sit while wearing trousers to avoid losing balance, and that he now relies on handle bars around the house.
“The body gradually begins to lose its balance and there is a need to work on it to check and improve,” Bachchan wrote, adding that his daily routine is now shaped as much by medicines, yoga, and mobility training as by work.
Adjustments in daily routine
Bachchan said that even activities once considered easy now feel difficult. “Some routines that were there earlier, seem to suggest that because it was done some years ago, it shall be a cake walk to initiate them again. NAH .. no baby. Just one day’s absence and the pains and the mobility goes for a very long walk ..it is a wonder that the normal actions, earlier, now require the mind to think before they can be exercised,” he wrote.
The actor revealed that bravado sometimes tempts him to ignore the changes, but reality forces caution. “Handle bars ..Oh boy .. !!!! you need them all over to hold and steady thy body before any physical act .. just the simplest of them being bending down to pick up that piece of paper that had flown off your desk with the breeze ..Seriously ..The bravado tells you to go ahead .. until you realise .. goodness, its a major problem .. the rapidity of its performing has slowed down with uncertainty ..”
A universal process of ageing
While noting that his readers may laugh at his confessions, Bachchan emphasised that the effects of ageing are universal. “But let me tell you IT SHALL HAPPEN .. TO ALL OF US ..I wish it does not .. but in time it shall ..We all go downward the day we are brought into this World .. the down trend begins at birth …Sad .. but it is the reality of living and life …Youth races through life’s challenges with aplomb ..Age .. suddenly speed brakes your vehicle and tells you, apply the brakes to avoid the accelerated bump when you drive the vehicle of LIFE.”
He concluded with a reflective note, observing that while one may resist the decline, the outcome is inevitable. He added that true fulfilment lies in completing one’s purpose and preparing for what comes next, attributing some of his thoughts to chants shared by his daughter Shweta Bachchan.
