MHI Demonstrates Transport of Relief Supplies in case of a Disaster Using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles Currently in Development

Involvement in Practical Training Exercise Conducted by JGSDF Eastern Army in Cooperation with Local Governments

  • Establishing dual-use UAVs for civil and defense applications
  • Automating the transportation of heavy freight with MHI’s multi-purpose medium-sized UAV
  • Speeding up the transportation of medications utilizing a VTOL (vertical liftoff and landing) UAV efficient in flying cross countries at high speed

TOKYO, July 31, 2025 – (JCN Newswire) – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) took part in a useful training workout hung on July 17 at the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Asaka Garrison (Nerima-ku, Tokyo), targeted at enhancing reaction abilities in case of an earthquake fixated the Tokyo city. The training was performed by the JGSDF Eastern Army in cooperation with city governments, with MHI signing up with at the demand of the Japan UAS Industrial Development Association (JUIDA). MHI performed training to transfer relief products to separated catastrophe victims utilizing its medium-sized multirotor uncrewed aerial automobile (hereinafter “medium-sized UAV”presently being established by its Commercial Aviation Systems department, and the VTOL (vertical liftoff and landing) UAV being established by the Integrated Defense & & Space Systems department.

The medium-sized UAV is being established for a range of functions, such as carrying relief products in case of a catastrophe, offering logistics support to remote islands and mountainous locations, and communicating products for building deal with power transmission towers. It has conveyance performance with boosted wind resistance throughout launch and travelling, and an automated dumping function that permits the freight to be decreased at the location with a winch from a hovering state without needing to land. For this workout, MHI carried out a packing presentation of relief materials, and a flight presentation. Moving forward, MHI will pursue more practical enhancements such as incorporation of satellite interaction abilities, and extension of the travelling variety with a hybrid power system.(Note)

The VTOL UAV is being established for the function of rapidly providing relief materials to remote islands and ships in transit. It can high speed flight over cross countries of as much as 1,000 kilometers, and can remove and land even in locations without runways. For this workout, MHI made the most of the maneuverability and vertical liftoff and landing abilities of the VTOL UAV to show fast shipment of medications to hot spot.

MHI will continue to pursue the advancement of dual-use UAVs with factor to consider for both civil and defense applications, and through their usage, work to offer options for numerous social difficulties.
