Canada – Assault on two staff members at Edmonton Institution

On February 17, 2022, two staff members were assaulted at Edmonton Institution, a maximum-security federal institution, when responding to a physical altercation between two inmates. The injured staff members were evaluated and treated at an outside hospital. During the incident, one inmate was injured and was also treated at an outside hospital.

On February 17, 2022, two staff members were assaulted at Edmonton Institution, a maximum-security federal institution, when responding to a physical altercation between two inmates. The injured staff members were evaluated and treated at an outside hospital. During the incident, one inmate was injured and was also treated at an outside hospital.

The assailant has been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken.

The Edmonton Police Service and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Canada – Assault of an inmate at Atlantic Institution

On January 1, 2022, at approximately 3:00 p.m., an inmate was assaulted at Atlantic Institution, a maximum-security federal institution. The injured inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment. The inmate has since returned from the hospital.

January 21, 2022 – Renous, New Brunswick – Correctional Service Canada

On January 1, 2022, at approximately 3:00 p.m., an inmate was assaulted at Atlantic Institution, a maximum-security federal institution. The injured inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment. The inmate has since returned from the hospital.

The assailants have been identified and the Blackville detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is presently investigating the incident.

The safety and security of offenders, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

CSC will also investigate the circumstances of this incident and continue to work with the police.

On November 4, 2021, at approximately 3:00 pm, a staff member was assaulted at Collins Bay Institution, a multi-level security federal institution. The injured staff member was evaluated and treated at an outside hospital.

The assailant has been identified, and the Ontario Provincial Police Penitentiary Squad is presently investigating the incident.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will also investigate the circumstances of this incident and continue to work with the police.

The safety and security of offenders, CSC staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Canada – Assault of staff members at Grand Valley Institution

On February 28, 2021, at approximately 7:45pm, three staff members were assaulted at Grand Valley Institution, a multi-level security federal institution. The injured staff members were evaluated and treated at an outside hospital.

The assailant has been identified and the appropriate actions will be taken. Waterloo Regional Police and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances of this incident while continuing to work with the police and take the appropriate measures.

The safety and security of institutions, their staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
