TOKYO, Nov 6, 2025 -(JCN Newswire)- Mitsubishi Power, a power services brand name of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has actually gotten an agreement to support the oil-to-natural gas fuel conversion job at the O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant in Can Tho in southern Vietnam.

Mitsubishi Power will offer the primary devices, such as the burner for the boiler at the core of the system, leveraging its technological abilities as the OEM (initial devices producer) of the existing boiler to perform the fuel conversion, and add to decreases in CO2 emissions. In addition, Mitsubishi Power will set up a selective catalytic decrease (SCR) system to cleanse the NOx (nitrogen oxides) included in exhaust gases, permitting the plant to satisfy more stringent ecological guidelines in the future.

The O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant makes up Units 1 (330 megawatts (MW)) and Unit 2 (330 MW), which began operation in 2009 and 2015, respectively. The overall output is 660 MW, with the existing primary devices offered by Mitsubishi Power.

The fuel conversion task is being carried out by Power Generation Corporation 2 (EVNGENCO2), a part of Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN) Group. The specialist for engineering, procurement, and building (EPC) is a consortium of LILAMA Corporation, a building business under Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction, and Power Generation Corporation 3 (EVNGENCO3), likewise part of EVN Group. Mitsubishi Power got the agreement for the primary devices from this consortium. Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., a part of MHI Group based in Singapore, will perform the EPC engineering assistance and dispatch workers to offer technical help.

Talking about the agreement award, Makoto Fujita, Senior General Manager, Steam Power Business Division, Energy Systems at MHI, stated, “Since the start of operations for Unit 1 in 2009, the O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant has played an important role in the development of the Mekong Delta region. As the OEM of the existing power plant, we are extremely proud to be able to contribute to the stable supply of energy and decarbonization in Vietnam through our participation in this fuel conversion project. We will devote our full effort to completing this project, and provide support for the long-term, stable operation of the plant.”

In August this year, Mitsubishi Power got an agreement to provide 2 innovative J-Series Air-Cooled (JAC) gas turbines as the core devices for the O Mon 4 Thermal Power Plant, a gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) center with a developed capability of 1,155 MW, which is nearby to the O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant. The task is set up for conclusion in 2028. Vietnam has actually created the Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8), which requires diversifying the energy mix, decreasing coal reliance, and broadening gas and renewable resource. Mitsubishi Power, in addition to supplying GTCC innovation for the O Mon 4 Thermal Power Plant, will even more reinforce its assistance for Vietnam’s energy strategy by supplying boiler fuel conversion innovation for the O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant, adding to Vietnam’s nationwide target of attaining net no emissions by 2050.

Akihiro Ondo, CEO and Managing Director of Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., stated, “Vietnam boasts the highest real GDP growth rate among the ASEAN-5 nations. We are committed to contributing to Vietnam’s economic development by leveraging cutting-edge technology and providing meticulous services.”

Mitsubishi Power will even more improve its efforts for the prevalent adoption of innovations with high efficiency and dependability, adding to the steady supply of electrical power necessary for financial advancement all over the world, and supporting the preservation of the international environment by promoting energy decarbonization.
