Death of Niali youth: Wife of deceased accused in-laws of murder over property dispute, 3 arrested
In a major development in the mysterious death of a youth from Balipatna on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, the wife of the deceased, on Saturday, has accused her father-in-law, stepmother-in-law, and brother-in-law of murdering him over a long-standing property dispute.
Bijaylaxmi Mathia, wife of the deceased, further alleged that the three, along with others, had tortured and ultimately killed her husband, Jyoti Ranjan Mathia.
“I want all culprits must get stringent action. They never allowed us to live in the house. They have set my husband on fire, resulting in his death,” Bijaylaxmi alleged.
Following the allegations and preliminary probe, Balipatna police arrested the deceased youth’s father, stepmother, and stepbrother.

Confirming the arrests, Zone 4 ACP Abhimanyu Nayak said, “A scientific team investigated the matter. Based on the evidence collected, we have arrested three persons. It appears to be a case of murder, but clarity will come after the post-mortem report. The accused will be produced in court and brought on remand if required.”
Police sources revealed that the deceased had himself lodged a complaint against the same three family members before his death, indicating deep-rooted discord within the family.
Meanwhile, a video has surfaced in which the deceased reportedly stated that his father, stepmother, and stepbrother poured petrol on him and set him on fire. Police said the authenticity of the video and details of its recording are being verified.
Jyoti, who sustained severe burn injuries, was first rushed to Balipatna Community Health Centre and later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he succumbed during treatment.
