     The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government held a welcome home ceremony at Hong Kong International Airport today (June 27) to greet the Special Olympics Hong Kong Delegation on their triumphant return from the 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

     The Under Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Raistlin Lau, and Assistant Director (Leisure Services) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department Mr Benjamin Hung, extended their welcome to the Hong Kong athletes at the airport.

     The 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games were held from June 17 to 25 in Berlin, Germany. A total of 81 Hong Kong athletes participated in 13 competition events, namely athletics, basketball, bocce, badminton, bowling, 7-a-side football, futsal, golf, gymnastics (rhythmic), gymnastics (artistic), swimming, tennis and table tennis at the Games. Amid days of intense competition, the Hong Kong delegation earned a total of 75 medals, comprising 39 gold, 25 silver and 11 bronze.

     Divided into Summer Games and Winter Games, the Special Olympics World Games, which are specially designed for athletes with intellectual disabilities, alternate between Summer and Winter Games biennially.

     The enthusiasm for the Olympic Games was extended in Hong Kong this morning (December 4) when Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Mainland Olympians attended Sports Demonstrations by Mainland Olympians to stage sports demonstrations in badminton, fencing, gymnastics, table tennis, diving and swimming as well as chat with local athletes.



     The Mainland Olympians delegation gave badminton, fencing, gymnastics and table tennis demonstrations at Queen Elizabeth Stadium and diving and swimming demonstrations at Victoria Park Swimming Pool. The demonstrations attracted around 3 400 members of the public to watch as spectators. The audiences applauded the athletes for their superb sports demonstrations, which have deeply impressed Hong Kong citizens.



     Besides giving sports demonstrations, the Mainland Olympians in badminton, gymnastics, fencing and table tennis also took part in skills exchanges with their Hong Kong counterparts. At the swimming and diving demonstrations, the Mainland Olympians in diving, swimming, rowing and canoeing had a friendly chat with local young athletes. The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr John Lee, and the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Caspar Tsui, visited Queen Elizabeth Stadium and the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Joe Wong, visited Victoria Park Swimming Pool to view the demonstrations at the venues and greeted members of the delegation this morning.

      

     Both sports demonstration events featured lucky draws to pick lucky spectators to be awarded souvenirs autographed by Mainland Olympians.



     Those who were unable to secure tickets were able to enjoy the live television broadcasts of the events joined by the Mainland Olympians.

     To support Hong Kong athletes taking part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will set up Olympics Live Zone at designated sports centres in 18 districts to broadcast the Games’ competitions, allowing members of the public to experience the excitement of this spectacular sports event and cheer for Hong Kong athletes participating in the Games.
      
     On the opening day of the Olympic Games on July 23, a launch-out event for Olympics Live Zone will be held at 5pm at Kowloon Park Sports Centre. Apart from the programmes of sports demonstration and play-in on the event day, Hong Kong athletes will share sports knowledge with members of the public and show support for the athletes participating in the Games. Details will be announced later. Olympics Live Zone at the other venues will also be open from the evening of July 23.
      
     The opening hours for all Olympics Live Zone between July 24 and August 8 will be from 8am to 11pm. Members of the public are welcome to visit and watch the live broadcast and highlights of competitions. Exhibition panels featuring Hong Kong athletes in Olympic Games will also be displayed at the venues. Locations of the Olympics Live Zone are set out at Annex.
      
     Besides, a series of Learning Sports 101 videos had been uploaded in LCSD Edutainment Channel. The videos featured introduction and demonstration of sports skills by elite athletes, including Olympic sports distance run, tennis, basketball, golf, badminton, volleyball, rugby, table tennis, football and swimming, as well as non-Olympic sports squash, dancesport and hiking. During the Olympic Games, videos of other sports like fencing, karate will be released in phases. The videos aim to encourage the public to take part in sports while having fun in watching Olympics events.
