Breaking down barriers to the gender investment gap

WEBWIRE

  • Most women have a savings account (61%) or cash ISA (35%).
  • Men are almost twice as likely to invest in Stocks and Shares ISAs (30% vs 17%), SIPPs (19% vs 8%) or General Investment Accounts (16% vs 9%).
  • Easy access, digital apps and Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protection are key features of choosing a savings or investment product.
  • 37% of women do not invest vs 24% of men almost one in five women (18%) think the risk is too high, 10% say its too complicated and 6% dont know where to start.

As part of Avivas commitment to promoting financial inclusion its most recent research sheds light on women and investing and aims to provide valuable insights to empower women to take control of their financial journeys and plan for a better future.

More than two thirds of women (68%) invest money at least once a month and more than 2 in 5 (42%) check their savings and investments online, or via an app, at least once a week. This leads to almost one in five (19%) knowing exactly how much their investments are worth at any given time.

Of the women who do invest, the largest proportion save into a regular savings account (61%) and one in three (35%) invest into Cash ISAs, but just over one in six (17%) hold a stocks and shares ISA, compared with 30% of men.

Equal numbers (37%) cited easy access to funds and being protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) as the most important aspects of choosing a savings or investment product. Low or reasonable fees and charges was most important to almost one in four (23%), and almost one in five (19%) stated that access to a digital app was essential.

Almost two in five (37%) of women surveyed say they do not invest at all, compared with almost a quarter of men (24%). The reasons given were varied. Predictably in the current environment, not having any surplus money to invest (45%) was top of the list for most women. Almost one in five (18%) think the risk is too high, 10% say they find investing too complicated and 9% worry that they wont be able to withdraw money if they need it urgently. Some (6%) say they dont know where to start. These factors all highlight the need for targeted financial education and further empowerment for women.

Avivas research also shows that women have a balanced approach to risk. When asked to describe their investment risk tolerance the majority (85%) said their investment strategy was either medium (35%) or low (50%) risk. This approach is to be commended as studies1suggest that female investors regularly outperform their male counterparts over the longer term, which is attributed to a patient and more disciplined investment style.

Joanne Philips, Managing Director of Direct Wealth at Aviva says,In an era where financial independence is a key aspiration for many, there is a need to address some of the unique challenges that many women may face when it comes to investing.

Whether they are just starting out, or looking to enhance their investment strategy, its important to consider and take practical steps to help navigate the often daunting world of investing. By providing tailored guidance for women, we hope to inspire confidence and enable them to achieve their financial goals.

Avivas Wealth appis now available to download, and is designed to provide helpful information for investors and provide a holistic view of all their Aviva investments in one place. We know that a digital experience is important to consumers, so we hope by simplifying the investment journey we can help them to expand their wealth in an intuitive way.

Key investment tips:

1. Education:Start by building a solid foundation in financial literacy to develop knowledge about different investment concepts, terminology, and strategies to make informed decisions. There are plenty of online courses, toolsand calculators available.

2. Set and prioritise financial goals:Clearly define short and long-term financial goals. Having clear goals will guide the investment strategy and help stay focused on what matters most. Decide whether saving or investing is best for you. Cash guarantees you safety but may get eroded by inflation. Investing will make your money work harder, but you could get back less than you put in.

3. Emergency fund:Before diving into investments, establish an emergency fund to cover unforeseen expenses. This provides a financial safety net and prevents the need to cash in investments in an emergency.

4. Dont put all your eggs in one basket:Consider spreading your savings and investments across a variety of different funds, assets, and tax efficient wrappers to reduce your risk and optimise long-term returns. Diversification can provide a more balanced approach to long-term wealth creation. Only 7% of women say they are investing in a diversified portfolio vs 18% of men.

5. Support networks:Connect with other investors – building a strong network can provide valuable insights and encouragement throughout the investment journey. Learn from the experiences of others.

6. Stay informed:Keep abreast of market trends and emerging opportunities. Stay updated on whats happening in the domestic economy or global events that may impact your investments. And regularly review your investment portfolio to ensure it still aligns with your goals and risk tolerance. You may need to make changes based on your financial situation or market conditions.

7. Understand your risk tolerance:Assess your risk tolerance and invest accordingly. Tailor your portfolio to align with your comfort level, ensuring a balanced approach to risk and return.

Investments can go down as well as up. These guidelines are designed to break down barriers and equip women with the knowledge and confidence they might need to navigate the world of finance successfully. However, individual circumstances will vary. It is always advisable to consult a financial adviser who can provide personalised advice based on specific goals and financial situations.

HSL and partners place purple flags in Spring Lake

TOMS RIVER, N.J.Aug. 25, 2023PRLog — Nearly 110,000 individuals died of a drug overdose in the United States last year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a 14 percent rise from the previous year. 2,892 of these individuals were New Jersey residents. This national epidemic is touching lives across the nation, especially right here at home. In observance of Overdose Awareness month, HOPE Sheds Light, Inc. (HSL) is actively engaged in the community, aiming to boost awareness and diminish stigma by taking part in various events across Ocean and Monmouth Counties.

In support of a stigma-free Asbury Park, HSL participated in the Black Poster Project at the Berkeley Oceanfront on August 5th. This event united families and community members, offering them the opportunity to observe the posters and read the stories of the 600 individuals whose lives were tragically affected by addiction. Additionally, the HSL team was on site for the Mayor’s Wellness Celebration on August 8th. This community initiative championed healthy and active living in Asbury Park and worked to improve overall health within the community.

On August 9th, HSL partnered with the Prevention Coalition of Monmouth County and local municipalities in supporting International Overdose Awareness Day with purple flag displays. The purple flags placed in front of the Wall Township Municipal Building, Wall High School, Manasquan Municipal Building, Sea Girt Borough Hall, Spring Lake Municipal Building and Brielle Borough Hall represent the Monmouth County residents whose lives were lost to overdoses in 2023. The display also recognizes the countless more residents who have been
forever affected by overdose deaths.

Pamela Capaci, CEO of HSL, emphasizes that the focus lies in stopping the stigma surrounding addiction and establishing a safety net throughout the Jersey Shore. “We offer programming in Ocean and Monmouth counties that engages adolescents and young parents to effectively end the generational cycle of addiction,” she said. “We want people to see the face of recovery and understand that there is great probability, with proper health and care, we can improve the outcomes of so many people. This is a disease and people do recover. We will do whatever it takes to put an end to the purple flags.”

Looking to the future, HSL will host its 10th Annual Celebration of HOPE Walk at the Seaside Heights Boardwalk on Saturday, September 9, 2023. At the Celebration of HOPE Walk, the community can come together to learn about substance use disorder, celebrate recovery
and provide hope to those affected.

HSL will offer resources at the walk for family members and friends of those dealing with addiction and substance misuse. The event will also highlight inspirational speakers including
the organization’s founders, Ron Rosetto, Arvo Prima and Stephen Willis, onsite vendors, face painting for the kids, music, a 50/50 raffle and more.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. on September 9th on the Hiering Avenue beach in Seaside Heights. A registration fee of $10 is suggested to participate (includes a free t-shirt). To learn

Breaking the Petrification Wall by the World’s First Women’s Revolution in Iran –

With the approval of the resolution proposed by the United States in the meeting of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, the Islamic Republic was expelled from the Womens Commission of this organization with 29 votes in favor, 8 votes against and 16 abstentions.

Sequel of meeting aims to expel the Islamic Republic from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and in response to the voices of Irans civil society and the systematic suppression of women and the violation of their rights during the 43 years of religious dictatorship, it shows the support of the international community for the rise of #women_of_life_freedom.

This uprising took place after the killing of #Mehsa_Amini by the Irshad patrol on September 16, 2022 and has continued until now. The global reflection of this revolution is due to the colorful presence of women and the young generation in a society with patriarchal rules and religious dictatorship, and the support of various communities. because it is clear to every free-thinking person that the freedom of a society goes beyond the freedom of women and their rights in the society.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has not considered the rights of women in society and family in any way by passing and implementing anti-women laws for over 43 years.

According to these laws, the value of women in Iran is half that of men. For example, the martyrdom of a woman is half that of a man, and her share of inheritance is considered half that of her brothers. This is also true for dowry, and if a man kills a woman, the victims family must pay half of the womans dowry to execute the sentence of retribution for the murderer.

According to these laws, if a father kills a womans child, the mother is not considered the guardian and cannot appear in court as a plaintiff because the father is considered as the owner and custody of his child.

Women do not have the right to divorce, and the law only gives women the right to divorce if the man is a prisoner or a drug addict, and that is why women are often forced to accept the most difficult conditions and physical and mental harm from their husbands. and this is even if they get a divorce. In case of separation of husband and wife, the custody of the children is with the father, and this becomes more bitter when the husband dies for any reason, the husbands family will have the right to take care of their grandchildren more than the childrens mother.

In many small towns and suburbs and sometimes poor society, girls are married to older men at a very young age, and they experience child marriage and mothers child in their childhood, and this is while the law not only does not defend it, but also it also promotes and encourages marriages. In the Islamic republics religious authoritarian regime, a woman is only a means of fertility and continuation of the generation and taking care of mens needs.

Women in Iran need their husbands consent to apply for obtaining a passport, and this goes as far as to travel and leave the country, to work, to be employed, and to participate in any profession or skill, they need written consent from their husband or their guardian.

According to the ruling Islamic laws in Iran, women cannot attend sports stadiums and some public places with men. Also, womens voices are prohibited, and no woman can sing in public gatherings.

Iranian women do not have the right to choose even about their veil and hijab, and any freedom, including freedom of opinion and freedom of expression, is nipped in the bud. According to Islamic and Sharia laws, men in Iran can have multiple wives and they consider it their inalienable right, while honor killings happen all over the country. When a man who considers himself the owner or guardian of a woman, kills her; after passing a very short prison term, he will return to the society.

But in a society with such strict laws and so much prejudice that prevails in most families, free girls have been brought up who make up 60% of the countrys student population at high levels of education and today their voices have become the echoes of the world. Delicate bodies but with exemplary courage and bravery stand in front of oppressive forces. They demand their right and freedom for their life and femininity with a loud voice. Even though they know that they may be killed or arrested or subjected to the most terrible physical and mental tortures and rape, and sometimes they die under torture or due to bleeding after rape; or they may be sentenced to death in court for the crime of fighting, and being an enemy of God.

Dr. Shohreh Ghasemi said: Iranian women are determined and perhaps their resistance made the international community decide to expel the Islamic Republic from the United Nations Commission on Women, and expel this most anti-feminist government from a place it did not deserve to be in.

The decision that the women have taken for freedom alongside the men of this land with the unity and integrity of Iran and are moving in the direction of the revolution and victory can become the basis for great and significant changes in the whole world and bring peace and tranquility to the region and the world. This revolution can be a message for the liberation of women in the Middle East from the yoke of patriarchy.

Sanaz Hakimi Said: This change requires the cooperation and support of the international communities so that the Islamic Republic is expelled from all international arenas and the Revolutionary Guards are sanctioned as terrorists. Also, European countries should expel Iranian ambassadors and deport them to Iran and demand their ambassadors as well. Do not enter into any agreements or transactions with Iran (whether under the JCPOA or otherwise). Because the income will be spent on domestic and foreign terrorists without affecting peoples livelihood.

Increasing the access of the Iranian people to the free internet, will prevent the silence of these peoples voices and, as a result, severe repression, and express the value of women, womens rights, freedom and human life, the international community with all-out support of the movement. The freedom-loving people of Iranian women will prove that they are committed to human rights everywhere on the on the earth.

The international community should accompany and support this popular uprising that introduces the worlds first womens revolution so that the blood of Irans children is not trampled any more, Dr. Shohreh Ghasemi said.

#WOMENLIFEFREEDOM

We the women in the Middle East are alike.
So alike that occasionally I feel Ive left my hair behind in Kabul
and with a stone in hand, Im standing by the Palestinian borderline
Or sometimes even I sweep the Gulan heights with water.
We the women in the middle east are alike
So alike that occasionally I suffer the burning sensation of acid in the streets of Tehran on my skin
And give birth to a headless baby in the deserts of Damascus
We the women in the middle east.
I do not have as many reasons to live as to die, but yet with faces hidden behind burghas
We are looking for freedom.
