New Delhi electronic music duo Tech Panda x Kenzani head to Amritsar for their new music video “Jija,” bearing witness to a love story that triumphs against odds.

The duo worked with film production studio Rasa Films, executive producer Tania Narang and director of photography Arundeep Teji and their crew for a narrative that follows a trumpet player from a wedding band determined to win back his lover, even as she’s hours away from being married off to another. From motorcycle rides on rural roads to wedding colors, “Jija” sees Tech Panda x Kenzani at their most vibrant yet.

The duo tells Rolling Stone India that even though “Jija” was released as a single last year, they felt it deserved “a more elaborate” video release to reach a wider audience. “It has a visual story to tell,” the duo adds. “With ‘Jija,’ the intent was established right in the beginning, where we saw the potential of a really kitsch video for the track and we are happy we could bring our vision to life.”

In that way, the Punjabi vocal hooks of the song inspired the location, in terms of filming in Amritsar. “The song has such uplifting Punjabi folk vocals, so we wanted to definitely keep the heartland of Punjab as a central theme in our visual storytelling,” the duo says. Shot across two days in and around the city, Tech Panda and Kenzani say they got to interact with village folks across ages and witness a bit of rural life in Punjab “up close and personal.”

The idea of the trumpet player and a wedding band has recurred in “Jija” following their inclusion of horn sections at their shows, as well as in the artwork for their most recent single, “Bombay Drama.” The duo says the symbolism of the brass band has taken on a “bigger dimension” than they imagined. “I think it’s just the sheer juxtaposition of various art forms that makes the audience stand up and take notice. It was a very conscious decision to include baraat trumpet players in our promotion, and we took it a notch higher by incorporating a small element of it in our sets. The response was phenomenal, and it just sort of solidified the idea even more and made us take braver experiments with it,” the duo adds.
