SHM Group (SHM), one of the foremost companies in shipbuilding, ship management, and maritime safety, has been awarded a dock repair and maintenance contract by the Border Security Force (Water Wing) in Bhuj for the mechanized vessel Sindhu.
The mandate involves a comprehensive overhaul of the vessel, including structural, mechanical, electrical, and safety systems. Key activities include hull and FRP repairs, anti-fouling coatings, replacement of critical components, overhaul of Cummins marine engines and propulsion systems, gearbox alignment, rudder repairs, marine-grade electrical rewiring, navigation system calibration, and installation of fire safety and life-saving systems compliant with global SOLAS standards.
IIT Bombay alumnus, Mr. Saifuddin Hajee, Founder & Chairman, SHM Group, said, “What started as a three-boat deployment with the Gujarat Maritime Board soon became a defining moment for our company. The operational requirements and long-term vision behind this mandate triggered the acquisition of a shipyard, laying the foundation for what has since evolved into a fully integrated shipbuilding vertical. We remain committed to supporting Gujarat’s emergence as a leading maritime hub through advanced engineering and lifecycle solution. Following its successful implementation in Gujarat, the model was replicated across major Indian ports, including – Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), Mumbai Port Trust and Mormugao Port Trust.”
The project will be executed under stringent regulatory oversight, including inspections by the BSF Board of Officers and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), along with mandatory full-power sea trials prior to final delivery.
In addition to repair and refurbishment, SHM will manage end-to-end execution, including vessel transportation, dockyard operations, fuel management, and deployment of certified engineers and skilled manpower.
As part of its ongoing engagement with the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), SHM has also offered its expanded portfolio of maritime solutions to support the state’s focus on maritime security, coastal preparedness, and infrastructure development
SHM’s journey began with a landmark contract from the Gujarat Maritime Board, in 2005 where the company was entrusted with providing specialized security boats for key ports in Gujarat: Okha, Mandvi, and Porbandar. This initiative marked one of the earliest deployments of dedicated port security vessels in the country. A strategic inflection point that transformed a service contract into a full-scale shipbuilding capability.
SHM offers an end-to-end maritime lifecycle solutions unmatched anywhere in the world — From port supply to offshore defence vessels; from safety equipment manufacturing to advanced shipbuilding. SHM is the market leader in FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic/Fiberglass)) boat building as well as life saving appliances.
SHM has several pioneering innovative initiatives to its credits. SHM has been credited with the first Indian private FRP Boat Building yard in India whose vessels can operate 200 nautical miles in the open sea in the Sea State 6 conditions. SHM was the first to manufacture and deliver Aluminium high speed passenger crafts designed and built in just six months in compliance with HSC Code 2000.
With India accelerating port-led development under its maritime growth agenda, state maritime boards such as the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) play a critical role in managing non-major ports, marine infrastructure, and coastal assets. SHM’s end-to-end ship lifecycle solutions position it as a key partner for such authorities.
