Police on Tuesday arrested a youth for allegedly creating a fakeInstagram account and uploading a woman’s private photos and videos following a dispute over a failed relationship and marriage proposal in Sambalpur, Odisha.
The accused was apprehended by the Sambalpur Cyber Crime and Economic Offences Police Station after a detailed investigation into allegations of cyber harassment, online threats and circulation of obscene content through social media.
According to police, the incident was linked to a previous romantic relationship between the accused and the complainant. Officials said tensions reportedly escalated after a marriage proposal between the two failed.
Police said the accused allegedly began threatening the woman that her private photos and videos would be made viral on social media platforms. The woman later approached police after the threats reportedly intensified.
Fake Instagram account allegedly used to upload obscene content
During the investigation, police found that a fake Instagram account had allegedly been created using the woman’s identity. Objectionable and obscene photos and videos were reportedly uploaded through the account.
The circulation of the content allegedly caused severe mental trauma, harassment, and embarrassment to the victim after the posts began spreading online.
Police said a technical investigation and cyber tracking later revealed that the fake account was being operated by a youth from Deogarh district.
Acting on technical surveillance inputs, the cyber crime team traced and arrested the accused.
During the operation, police seized a mobile phone, SIM card, memory card and other digital evidence from the possession of the accused. An Aadhaar card was also seized as part of the investigation.
Officials said the seized electronic devices are being further examined to gather additional evidence related to the case.
Accused confessed during questioning: Police
Police further claimed that during interrogation, the accused admitted to operating the fake Instagram account and uploading the objectionable content.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms for cyber harassment, revenge targeting, and the circulation of private content following personal disputes and failed relationships.
