Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin were seen sharing a light minute, talking and positioning together, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, where Modi and Putin likewise exchanged a warm hug ahead of their official engagements.

The interaction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin came ahead of their bilateral meeting, scheduled to follow the plenary session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
“Prime Minister will address the plenary session of the Summit, where he will outline India’s approach to fostering regional cooperation under the SCO umbrella. After this engagement, he is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with President Putin, following which he will depart for India,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated on Sunday.
Previously, Modi likewise held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the top. Both leaders invited the favorable momentum in ties given that their last conference in Kazan at the BRICS Summit in October 2024.
They declared that India and China are “advancement partners, not competitors,” stressing that differences must not turn into disputes. Both called for a stable relationship rooted in mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity, which they said was essential not only for their own growth but also for building a multipolar Asia and a multipolar world. Modi underlined the importance of peace and tranquillity along the border areas for the continued advancement of bilateral ties.
The SCO today has 10 member states, India, Belarus, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, in addition to observers and dialogue partners. India, which became a full member in 2017 after being an observer since 2005, has held the chair of the SCO Council of Heads of Government in 2020 and the SCO Council of Heads of State from 2022 to 2023.
