Dr. Subhas Sarkar addresses the 33rd Foundation Day Celebrations of NIOS


Union Minister of State for Education, Dr. Subhas Sarkar addressed the 33rd Foundation Day Celebrations of NIOS as the Chief Guest. The function was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Education, Chairpersons of educational institutions, Heads of Departments, officers and staff of NIOS. Prof. Naval Kishore Ambasht, former Chairman, NIOS and Pro-Vice Chancellor, Central University of Haryana, Prof. Sushma Yadav graced the occasion .





Dr. Subhas Sarkar in his address appreciated the various programmes and schemes of NIOS and said that NIOS is lighting the lamp of knowledge all over the world. Talking about the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, he mentioned that today’s children will be young people in the age group of 30-40 years on the completion of 100 years of independence and will be responsible for building our nation. He said that the Ministry of Education, has entrusted NIOS with several responsibilities such as developing inclusive education resources, expanding the open and distance education system in states/UTs, translating all courses into more languages as required, creation of Indian Knowledge Tradition based courses and propagating Indian culture by translating them into major foreign languages. He also praised the programmes of NIOS enrolling 10 crore adults under ‘Basic Literacy Assessment’, training of in-service teachers, Gender Green Project and training in Yoga. He said that Indian Sign Language as subject at the secondary level has been acknowledged at national and international platforms. He described the launch of e-library called ‘DEEP’ by NIOS as a big step forward.


Prof. Saroj Sharma spoke about the journey of 33 years of NIOS and highlighted the special achievements. She said that NIOS is one of the two National Boards of Education under the Ministry of Education, which provides school education through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) for secondary, senior secondary and vocational education. She elaborated on the role of NIOS in the field of education, efforts being made by NIOS for successful implementation of New Education Policy, Virtual Open School, Digital Library (DEEP), NEPIA Project, MoU with Ministry of Defence for Agniveer Project, setting up of Mukta Kaushal Kendras and subjects offered under Indian knowledge Tradition. It was also conveyed by her that a curriculum called ‘Aarambhika’ is being developed by NIOS for catering the Indian Diaspora.





A documentary based on the journey of 33 years of educational endeavours of NIOS was presented on the occasion. In this documentary, ‘All England Badminton winner Pullela Gopichand said that most of the players in his badminton academy are getting education from NIOS.


NIOS alumni, Ms. Niranjana and Shri Vinod Kumar Chaudhary, were also felicitated on the occasion. Shri Vinod Kumar said that only due to his education in NIOS, he was able to get the credit of making Guinness Book of World Records 10 times (8 in Typing and 2 in sports). A proud learner of NIOS, Ms Niranjana is a successful ventriloquist. Prof. N. K. Ambasht, former Chairman, NIOS said that in this age of technology, innovations must lead to develop ‘standalone’ courses for Indian Diaspora, to achieve the goals of the National Education Policy- 2020. Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sushma Yadav said that the role of NIOS increases in the light of New Education Policy. NIOS has such potential that the institute will be able to achieve the ambitious goals of National Education Policy-2020 in the coming years.

Dr. Subhas Sarkar addresses 102nd Foundation Day of Jamia Millia Islamia


Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education, Govt. of India today addressed the 102nd Foundation Day of Jamia Millia Islamia.


 JMI Vice Chancellor , Prof. Najma Akhtar and Guest of Honour of the function Dr Upendra Giri, Founder & CEO, Upbuild Global Inc., California, USA attended the event.


Dr. Subhas Sarkar started his address by congratulating the teaching and non-teaching fraternity, students, alumni and all stakeholders. He said that since its establishment, the university has achieved uncountable milestones, which will remain memorable and significant for the nation. Dr. Subhas Sarkar highlighted that the National Educational Policy 2020 facilitates the inclusion of transformative curricula. The main focus is given to the holistic development of learners, equipping them with key 21st-century skills, and enhancing essential learning and critical thinking. Also, a great focus is given to hands-on experiential learning, and on providing a holistic approach to the learning process., he added.


The Minister congratulated JMI for A++, the most coveted grade, awarded by NAAC in 2021. He also extended his wishes to faculty members of Jamia who have been featured on the list of 2% of world scientists released by Stanford University, USA.


JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar highlighted the achievements of the university in the last few years. She said that the university appeals to the government to grant approval for setting-up a medical and nursing college which is highly required not only for this area but will also be useful for the people living in adjoining areas.

Dr. Subhas Sarkar addresses 8th Annual Convocation of IIEST SHIBPUR


Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education today addressed the 8th Annual Convocation of the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur as the Chief Guest. Prof. Parthasarathi Chakrabarti, Chairperson, Board of Governors and Director, IIEST, Shibpur presided over the function.


Speaking on the occasion Shri Sarkar said that the New Education Policy 2020 aims to strengthen the new learning paradigm through the adoption of new education technologies or developing available in-house skills. The knowledge that the students have obtained will help them to establish values and contribute not only to the development of the nation but also, of the whole world, he added.


He emphasised that it is the time to know about our ancestors and forefathers and include the Indian Knowledge Systems in teaching and learning.He hoped that our future generations will “Dream More and Achieve More” and lead India towards prosperity and global leadership.


A total number of 1016 students received degrees in this Convocation. Degrees and prizes have been awarded in this Convocation to a total of 522 Undergraduate students of 10 courses, 350 postgraduate students from different courses, 15 Dual Degree students of five courses, and 129 Ph.D. Fellows who have completed their studies and passed the examinations during this period.


Medals have been awarded to 39 candidates who secured the highest marks in different disciplines. THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA GOLD MEDAL was awarded to Subhechchha Paul, Mechanical Engineering Department who secured 1st position among the undergraduates of all ten engineering disciplines taken together. GANESH CHANDRA MITRA MEMORIAL MEDAL was awarded to Nabanita Karmakar, Department of Mathematics who secured 1st position among the postgraduates of all the disciplines taken together. The endowment medals were awarded to the students who have stood first in their respective disciplines or have secured the highest marks in a particular subject.
