HAP Residents and Plainfield Community Members Celebrate the Holiday Season and Acquire Resources at HAP Events on December 14 & 21

On December 14, the Housing Authority of Plainfield (HAP) welcomed residents and the Plainfield community at its Holiday Health Screening NJ Mobile Unit and Community Service Providers Event at Joanne Hollis Gardens’ (JHG) HAP Center located at 543 West 3rd Street. The festive and informational event was the second installment of the JHG Community Resource Center’s information and referral fair which was held a few months ago. The December event was organized by the JHG Community Resource Center and brought together several organizations, such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, & Union Counties; Equal Opportunity Support Services; HOPES CAP Inc.; Jewish Family Services of Central New Jersey; Neighborhood Health Services Corporation; Partnership for Maternal & Child Health of Northern New Jersey; Prevention Links; Proceed Inc.; ScreenNJ; and Urban League of Union County. As part of the holiday celebration, Santa Claus (First And Fourth Wards Councilman-At-Large Barry N. Goode) took photos with children and there were toy giveaways, coat and clothing donations provided by the Non-Profit Clothing and Furniture Distribution Center as part of the clothes and toys uplifting initiative, resource linkages in the community, and cancer screenings provided to attendees inside the ScreenNJ mobile unit.

Rose Diggs, resident leader and JHG food pantry logistical coordinator, prepared a free lunch for the agencies in attendance without reservation in partnership with the JHG Community Resource Center (JHGRC). “I help as much as I can and I enjoy working together to assist with events and helping families in need. Mr Graham and the rest of the team have been doing a great job serving the community,” said Rose Diggs.

City officials in attendance included Vice President & Fourth Ward Councilwoman Terri Briggs-Jones and there was also departmental engagement from the City of Plainfield who extended their assistance during the event. Mt. Olive Baptist Church provided bible materials for the residents. Ten new bicycles were raffled off, adding even more joy to children’s holiday happiness.

The community resource center has been actively putting together a consortium group of organizations called the JHGRC Coalition Group that share a common interest of family self sufficiency and facilitate wraparound services, referred to as the Wheel of Opportunity, that are available in the area. The JHG Community Resource Center’s Director of Community Programs Eric Graham, PHM stated, “I am honored to say that the community stakeholders have been very welcoming and passionate about addressing the needs of families without adjustment. We had a fantastic turnout and the families and children had a magnificent time at our holiday health screening event. We are immensely grateful to all of our sponsors and ScreenNJ for providing an outstanding job offering their mobile health unit for both male and female residents.” ScreenNJ is an initiative from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the New Jersey Department of Health, and healthcare and community organizations across New Jersey that promotes the importance of cancer screening, early detection, and prevention.

HAP Executive Director Randall M. Wood remarked, “We continue to offer inspirational, educational, and wellness events such as these here at the Housing Authority of Plainfield and extend them to the greater Plainfield community. Thank you to all of our partner organizations for furthering our mission to enhance residents’ lives.”

Residents Medical Group Creates Pathways For Residency

Undertaking a medical residency is mandatory for all US medical school graduates for them to be able to work as full-time physicians.

The rationale behind this is that, in their role as medical residents working in a real hospital or medical facility environment, the medical school graduates will learn the soft skills and attain the emotional stability and maturity expected of a good, empathetic, and competent physician.

In other words, students acquire knowledge and learn the requisite skills relevant to their specialty during their stay at the medical school. However, working in a real-world and often high-stress medical environment calls for several other skills.

These include the ability to make sound decisions in emergencies; several soft skills such as teamwork, conflict resolution, time management, problem-solving, creative thinking, etc. And it is mainly during one’s medical residency or graduate medical education program that a future physician takes their first steps toward mastering these skills.

Thanks to its affiliation with top US medical schools and health institutions and its collaboration with Residents Medical Group, it has built up a model to find the best residency and fellowship match for every graduate passing through US medical schools.

Alongside Residents Medical Group, The Everest Foundation, a non-profit managed by Dr. Michael Everest and Agata Everest, known for its contribution to raising the standards of graduate medical education and research across the country, aids in helping medical graduates.

The extensive network of Residents Medical Group means that it is best to integrate a candidate into an accredited residency and internship program that perfectly matches the candidate’s skills, credentials, and future goals.

Residents Medical Group has two main ’pathways to placement’ programs to find the right graduate medical education match for all applicants: Clinical to Residency and Research to Residency.

The first is designed to integrate an applicant into an ACGME accredited program through extensive guidance and mentorship by the Residents Medical Group’s residency specialist counselors.

Residents Medical Group has its own evaluation program for all applicants. The evaluation is based on several criteria, including a candidate’s present level of skills, experience, USMLE scores, and more.

Based on this evaluation, candidates are either prepared for direct ’clinical to residency’ programs at top medical institutions in the country. Or, they are advised to undergo Residents Medical Group’s own well-crafted preparatory programs such as ’Extended Medical Externship to Residency’ or ’Unaccredited PGY-1 to Residency.’

According to Residents Medical Group, these programs are designed as the most effective pathways or avenues to find one’s dream residency in the US or globally.

Research to residency programs are meant for students interested in medical research. According to this pathway, deserving applicants are accepted into one of Residents Medical Group’s exclusive paid-research fellowship programs.

These research fellowships are conducted at ACGME accredited teaching hospitals and are available to US and international medical school students and graduates.

These fellowships are integrated into residency training positions, meaning that the researchers can begin their residency at the end of their paid-research tenures.

Hong Kong – Residents in Eastern District and Ma On Shan participate in COVID-19 vaccination events (with photos)

Residents in Eastern District and Ma On Shan participate in COVID-19 vaccination events (with photos)

******************************************************************************************

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Patrick Nip, attended COVID-19 vaccination events in Eastern District and Ma On Shan today (September 26). He appealed to members of the public, in particular the elderly, to seize the opportunity to get vaccinated before the winter influenza season arrives and encourage family members and friends who are not yet vaccinated to receive vaccination as early as possible.

Around 140 people attended the vaccination event at Hong Kong Central Library. After a health talk, the participants could choose to receive Sinovac vaccination at the Community Vaccination Centre (CVC) at Hong Kong Central Library or BioNTech vaccination at the CVC at Sai Wan Ho Sports Centre. The event was co-organised by the Eastern District Office, the Eastern and Wan Chai District Social Welfare Office and various organisations.

Meanwhile, the Government’s outreach vaccination team provided the BioNTech vaccination service to about 65 residents of a private housing estate in Ma On Shan. This is the first time that the property management company of a housing estate has taken the lead to gather residents who want to receive COVID-19 vaccination to participate in outreach vaccination.

“To take care of ourselves and our family members, we all have to understand the importance and urgency of receiving COVID-19 vaccination. In the face of the continued severe global pandemic situation and challenges posed by mutant strains, we must make concerted efforts and do our best to increase the vaccination rate. Basically, persons who are suitable for vaccination should get vaccinated. Both COVID-19 vaccines available in Hong Kong are safe and highly effective in protecting against severe disease and death from COVID-19 infection,” Mr Nip said.

All eligible persons who want to receive COVID-19 vaccination can collect same-day tickets from 21 CVCs under the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme so that they can get vaccinated without prior booking.

The Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases and the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases under the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health recommend that elderly persons should receive COVID-19 vaccination as soon as possible, as long as they are not suffering from acute illnesses. All elderly persons who have previously received influenza vaccines can safely receive COVID-19 vaccines.

Canada – Residents of the Northwest Territories to benefit from upgrades to wastewater and solid waste infrastructure

Today, Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Shane Thompson, Territorial Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, announced joint funding for seven wastewater and solid waste projects across the Northwest Territories.

Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, August 12, 2021— Across the country, Canadians are feeling the impacts of COVID-19 on their families, their livelihoods, and their way of life. Together, the governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories are taking decisive action to support families, businesses and communities to ensure community infrastructure is safe and reliable, while looking ahead to see what more can be done in these unprecedented times.

The Government of Canada is investing over $5.1 million in these projects through the Green Infrastructure Stream (GIS) of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of the Northwest Territories, Northwest Territories’ communities and Indigenous recipients are providing more than $1.7 million towards these projects.

Among the projects funded, improvements to the Fort Smith landfill will increase the Town’s capacity to manage and treat solid waste and reduce landfill by approximately 50% by diverting organic waste. Once completed, the upgrades to the Fort Smith landfill will provide residents with an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective waste management system for years.

All orders of government continue to work together for Northerners to make strategic infrastructure investments in communities across the territory when they need it the most.

“Ensuring that communities across the Northwest Territories have modern wastewater and solid waste infrastructure is vital to building strong communities and ensuring capacity for future growth while protecting the environment. Through the Investing in Canada Plan, the Government of Canada invests in thousands of infrastructure projects in all areas of the country, creating jobs and strengthening communities at a time when it is needed most.”

Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

“In partnership, Federal, Territorial, Indigenous and Community Governments are committed to investing in infrastructure projects with the intent of increasing the quality of life for NWT residents. To this end, we are further investing in projects that address communities’ needs for upgrades to solid waste and wastewater facilities. These projects will increase capacity at existing facilities to allow for safer and more efficient core infrastructure.”

The Honourable Shane Thompson, Territorial Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs

“The Town of Fort Smith’s Landfill Expansion project supports our strategic goal of becoming a leader in sustainability and in achieving the objectives identified in the Town of Fort Smith’s Waste Management Strategy. This has enabled us to rethink what we do with waste and take the necessary action to manage it better. The long term health of the environment depends on us.”
