University of Waterloo researchers combine Nobel prize-winning concepts to achieve scientific breakthrough

Researchers at the University of Waterloos Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) have brought together two Nobel prize-winning research concepts to advance the field of quantum communication.

Scientists can now efficiently produce nearly perfect entangled photon pairs from quantum dot sources.

Entangled photons are particles of light that remain connected, even across large distances, and the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics recognized experiments on this topic. Combining entanglement with quantum dots, a technology recognized with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2023, the IQC research team aimed to optimize the process for creating entangled photons, which have a wide variety of applications, including secure communications.

The combination of a high degree of entanglement and high efficiency is needed for exciting applications such as quantum key distribution or quantum repeaters, which are envisioned to extend the distance of secure quantum communication to a global scale or link remote quantum computers, said Dr. Michael Reimer, professor at IQC and Waterloos Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Previous experiments only measured either near-perfect entanglement or high efficiency, but were the first to achieve both requirements with a quantum dot.

By embedding semiconductor quantum dots into a nanowire, the researchers created a source that creates near-perfect entangled photons 65 times more efficiently than previous work. This new source, developed in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa, can be excited with lasers to generate entangled pairs on command. The researchers then used high-resolution single photon detectors provided by Single Quantum in The Netherlands to boost the degree of entanglement.

Historically, quantum dot systems were plagued with a problem called fine structure splitting, which causes an entangled state to oscillate over time. This meant that measurements taken with a slow detection system would prevent the entanglement from being measured, said Matteo Pennacchietti, a PhD student at IQC and Waterloos Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. We overcame this by combining our quantum dots with a very fast and precise detection system. We can basically take a timestamp of what the entangled state looks like at each point during the oscillations, and thats where we have the perfect entanglement.

To showcase future communications applications, Reimer and Pennacchietti worked with Dr. Norbert Ltkenhaus and Dr. Thomas Jennewein, both IQC faculty members and professors in Waterloos Department of Physics and Astronomy, and their teams. Using their new quantum dot entanglement source, the researchers simulated a secure communications method known as quantum key distribution, proving that the quantum dot source holds significant promise in the future of secure quantum communications.

In reality, excluding external factors, JinMed witnessed an impressive increase by 18.7% and net profit by 57.9% during the first half of the fiscal year 2023, signifying its consistent out-performance industry average growth the past three years.

After analyzing the revenue performance, let us delve into the growth prospects. The aging population in both China and Japan has created a consistent demand for medical assistive devices, particularly wheelchairs. According to a report by Frost & Sullivan, the total sales of wheelchairs in Japan have witnessed a compound annual growth rate of 12.2% from 2016 to 2020. Projections indicate that this growth rate is expected to further escalate to a remarkable 21.3% over the next five years. Considering China and Japan’s status as pivotal markets for JinMed, these prospects highlight substantial opportunities for advancement.

According to the company’s prospectus and recent disclosures, JinMed is actively expanding its sales channels and business scope. On one hand, it is proactively expanding its research and development efforts, further establishing its presence in the wheelchair market segment. This includes the development of a new generation of ultra-lightweight portable electric wheelchairs, thereby enhancing the market competitiveness of its core products. On the other hand, the company has also expressed its intention to strengthen sales in both European and American markets. Furthermore, it has embarked on ventures related to developing shared wheelchair-related infrastructure and other shared medical products, breaking away from solely selling shared wheelchairs to customers as done previously. Additionally, leveraging its strengths, the company is diversifying into various businesses such as domestic elderly electric mobility vehicles, intelligent bathing products, beauty products, and respiratory devices.

JinMed’s interim report for this year has successfully overcome the challenges posed by external factors. Given the high expectations for an increase, the company’s high valuation is a justified reflection of its performance.

Today, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Indigenous Services Canada, and the Chiefs’ Committee of the First Nations Education Council of Quebec (FNEC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will frame discussions for the development of a regional education agreement. This agreement is part of the transformation of education programs initiated by the Department in collaboration with First Nations. This transformation will meet First Nations’ objectives and priorities in the area of education to promote the academic success of students.

The Minister and the FNEC Chiefs are now committed to developing a regional education agreement that will clearly define the roles and responsibilities of the parties. This approach includes funding for kindergarten to grade 12 education and will meet the demands of First Nations while taking into account students’ needs. As a result, education outcomes will be improved and First Nations will exercise greater control over their children’s education.

This is in keeping with the policy and approach that took effect on April 1, 2019, which supports control of First Nations’ education by First Nations and ensures more predictable and suitable funding through new regional funding models.
