Canada – Foramsulfuron and Its Associated End-use Products, Proposed Re evaluation Decision (PRVD2024-04)

Health Canada is consulting Canadians on the proposal to continue registration of products containing foramsulfuron for sale and use in Canada, with proposed label updates.

Foramsulfuron is a selective sulfonylurea herbicide used to control post-emergence broadleaf weeds in field corn (Eastern Canada and Manitoba) and lowbush blueberry (Eastern Canada only) sites. It is applied once per season by field sprayer and may be applied with tank-mix to enhance weed control efficacy.

With respect to human health, dietary, occupational, and bystander risks were shown to be acceptable when foramsulfuron is used according to proposed conditions of registration, which include label amendments to meet current labelling standards such as updates to personal protective equipment for mixers, loaders and applicators, and standard restricted-entry intervals.

The environmental risk assessment found that risks to the environment (terrestrial and aquatic) associated with the use of foramsulfuron were shown to be acceptable when used according to proposed conditions of registration, which include precautionary statements, and spray buffer zones for the protection of terrestrial and aquatic habitats.

Canada – Azoxystrobin and Its Associated End-use Products, Proposed Re-evaluation Decision (PRVD2023-02)

Health Canada is consulting Canadians on the proposal to continue registration of azoxystrobin and associated end-use products registered for sale and use in Canada with label amendments including new risk mitigation measures.

Azoxystrobin is a fungicide registered for the control of various fungal diseases on a wide range of agricultural crops including, fruits, vegetables, specialty crops, greenhouse and outdoor ornamentals, turf and seed treatment.

To protect human health and the environment, the following risk-reduction measures are proposed:

Rotational plant-back intervals
Updated standard restricted-entry intervals, re-entry statements
Updated re-treatment intervals for barley, rye and wheat.
A prohibition of the use of handheld mist blower/airblast or handheld fogging equipment in greenhouse
A prohibition of the use of the commercial products on residential turf sites
Updated standard drift statement
Increased or updated personal protective equipment
A standard statement to seed treatment labels and seed tags to keep products out of reach of children and animals
Updated environmental precautionary statements.
New or updated spray buffer zones ranging from 0–20 meters for all uses.

Currently registered products containing azoxystrobin can be found in the Pesticide Product Information Database and in Appendix I of PRVD2023-02. Appendix II of PRVD2023-02 lists all uses for which azoxystrobin is presently registered.

Canada – Abamectin and Its Associated End-use Products, Proposed Re-evaluation Decision (PRVD2023-01)

Health Canada is consulting Canadians on the proposal to continue some uses of abamectin and associated end-use products in Canada, provided new risk mitigation measures are put in place. The use of abamectin on greenhouse ornamentals grown for cut flowers is proposed for cancellation since occupational postapplication risks were not shown to be acceptable when used according to the current conditions of registration, or when additional mitigation is considered.

Abamectin is an acaracide/insecticide registered for use on a wide-range of outdoor field-grown fruit and vegetable crops, outdoor ornamentals, greenhouse vegetables and greenhouse ornamentals for the control or suppression of a variety of agricultural pests such as mites, sawflies, moths, thrips, leafminers, psyllids, aphids and certain beetles. It is also registered for commercial and domestic indoor and/or outdoor structural use to control cockroaches and ants.

To protect human health and the environment, the following risk-reduction measures are proposed:

Add personal protective equipment requirements for application of abamectin via handheld airblast/mistblowers
Limit the amount handled per day for application of abamectin via handheld airblast mistblowers
Impose restricted-entry intervals (REIs) of 1–11 days for onions, grapes and hops
Cancel the use of abamectin on greenhouse ornamentals grown for cut flowers as agronomically feasible REIs could not be established
Update label to meet current standards pertaining to personal protective equipment and best practice statements (spray drift)
Update commercial and domestic class structural end-use product labels to include a precautionary statement to protect domestic animals/pets
To protect aquatic organisms, maintain a vegetative filter strip and limit the maximum cumulative application rate.
