The excitement surrounding 3 Idiots 2 continues to grow after actor Aamir Khan confirmed that the much-loved franchise is officially moving forward. Now, director Rajkumar Hirani has offered fresh insight into what audiences can expect from the long-awaited sequel, revealing that the story will move far beyond college life and focus on a completely different phase of its beloved characters’ journeys.

Speaking recently, Hirani shared that the sequel will revisit Rancho, Farhan and Raju years after the events of the 2009 blockbuster, exploring the personal and emotional challenges that come with middle age.

The Story Shifts From Classrooms to Family Life

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Hirani explained that the film is still under development and will examine how life has changed for the trio after nearly two decades.

Hirani said, “There is a lot of work left. It’s primarily about what happens to these characters 15-20 years later. It’s not about college or anything. They are married and have children now. They are experiencing mid-life crisis, and so we will have to see, now what next?”

Instead of returning to engineering classrooms, the sequel will reportedly focus on adulthood, family responsibilities and the emotional crossroads faced by the three friends. The filmmaker hinted that while the setting has changed, the emotional bond and humour that made the original memorable will remain intact.

Hirani Promises The Same Humour With a Bigger Message

The filmmaker also assured fans that the sequel will preserve the heart of the original film while introducing a meaningful new theme.

“The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” he added.

Like the first film, which questioned India’s education system through comedy and emotion, the sequel is expected to carry a socially relevant message, something Hirani described as a “big one.”

Aamir Khan Says The Story Impressed Him

Earlier this year, Aamir Khan confirmed that 3 Idiots 2 is officially in development. During an interview with Amar Ujala, the actor revealed that he had already heard the storyline and found it “wonderful.” He also shared that the screenplay is still being refined before the project moves ahead.

According to Aamir, the sequel reunites audiences with Rancho, Farhan and Raju roughly a decade after the events of the original film, allowing viewers to witness how their lives have evolved over the years.

OG Cast to Reunite?

According to a Pinkvilla report, the sequel is expected to bring back Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, recreating the core cast that contributed to the film’s enduring popularity. Speculation has also been circulating about a possible “fourth idiot,” with reports linking Vicky Kaushal to the project.

However, neither the makers nor the actor have officially confirmed the casting, making it purely speculative at this stage.

Hirani Puts Another Ambitious Project on Hold

Industry reports also suggest that Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan have temporarily paused their planned biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke. The decision reportedly allows Hirani to devote his complete attention to developing the screenplay for 3 Idiots 2, a project that has generated immense anticipation among fans.
