Mumbai: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) is seriously evaluating construction of a mega shipyard in Maharashtra, its Chairman and Managing Director Capt Jagmohan said on Friday.

This is a part of its wider strategy to expand its footprint and support Indian government’s ambitions to become among top-five ship building nations in the world.

Earlier this year, MDL acquired 51 per cent stake in Colombo dockyard and a Mumbai-headquartered defence sector PSU and is looking for further growth opportunities.

“While East coast clusters are under active construction, we are seriously evaluating mega shipyard opportunity in Maharashtra,” he said at The Hindu’s Maharashtra Infrastructure Conclave.

He said, such a project can provide large scale employment, new MSME opportunities and export potential for the state of Maharashtra. MDL has sought state government support in the form of a suitable waterfront site, single-window timebound mechanisms, infrastructure and skilling.

Capt Jagmohan said MDL has executed warship and submarine projects worth ₹84,000 crore from its Mumbai yard in past 15 years.

“Our internal estimates suggest 40 per cent of this value ( around ₹34,000 crore) has flown into Mumbai’s local economy and surrounding areas,” he said.
