Hong Kong Customs spots 2 smuggling cases including cross-boundary personal vehicles (with pictures)

Hong Kong Customs the other day (May 18) identified 2 smuggling export cases including cross-boundary personal cars and trucks at the Shenzhen Bay Control Point and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port respectively, and took 427 live turtles, 8 turtle eggs and 222 live lizards with an overall approximated market price of about $521,000.

In the very first case, through danger evaluation, Customs the other day obstructed an outbound personal cars and truck at the Shenzhen Bay Control Point. After examination, Customs officers discovered 400 live turtles and 222 live lizards hidden in the incorrect compartment of extra tire.

In the 2nd case, Customs obstructed an outbound personal cars and truck at Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port the other day. After assessment, Customs officers discovered 27 live turtles and 8 turtle eggs hidden under the hood of the automobile, in which 3 live turtles and all the turtle eggs were thought to be set up threatened types.

Smuggling is a severe offense. Under the IEO, anyone condemned of importing or exporting unmanifested freight is responsible to an optimum fine of $2 million and jail time for 7 years upon conviction.

Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, anyone importing, exporting or having specimens of threatened types not in accordance with the Ordinance devotes an offense and will be responsible to an optimum fine of $10 million and jail time for 10 years upon conviction with the specimens surrendered.
