“During the flight, the Russian airplane did not differ the concurred flight course and did not break Estonian airspace,” the Russian Defence Ministry stated

Russian fighter jets did not break Estonian airspace and flew over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea in following northwest Russia to the Russian Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, the Russian Defence Ministry stated early on Saturday (September 20, 2025).

The federal government of NATO member Estonia stated 3 Russian military jets broke its airspace for 12 minutes in an “unprecedentedly brazen” attack. The occurrence happened simply over a week after more than 20 Russian drones went into Polish airspace, some downed by NATO jets.

“The flight was performed in stringent conformity with worldwide guidelines governing airspace without any infraction of the borders of other states as is verified by independent checks,” the Russian Defence Ministry stated of the 3 MiG-31 fighters in a post on Telegram.

“During the flight, the Russian airplane did not differ the concurred flight course and did not breach Estonian airspace,” it included.

The declaration stated the path taken by the fighters from the northwestern Russian area of Karelia “was over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea at a range of more than 3 km from the island of Vaindloo,” which lies off the Estonian coast.
