According to police sources, Town Police has successfully thwarted a planned highway robbery by apprehending eight suspected dacoits during a night patrol operation in Angul district yesterday. The highway lootera gang with eight persons was spotted in a suspicious position, prompting officers to take immediate action, leading to the arrest of the dacoits.
Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects attempted to flee from the spot. However, they were intercepted and captured at Hata Chhak (near a marketplace). A detailed search resulted in the seizure of two SUVs (sports utility vehicles), four country-made 7mm pistols, four rounds of live ammunition, two steel Chapads (sharp weapons suitably used for chopping), an iron axe, seven mobile phones, and around Rs 7,000 in cash.
The quick response by the night patrol unit not only averted a potentially dangerous crime but also led to the confiscation of deadly weapons, indicating the gang’s serious intentions.
Further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the gang’s operations and whether they are linked to other recent crimes in the region.
“The arrest of an eight-member gang was the result of a targeted operation following a tip-off about suspicious individuals allegedly planning a robbery in the locality. Upon seeing the police, the gang tried to escape via Raj Hotel Square, but their attempt failed. Around 4.00 AM, officers managed to successfully intercept and detain all eight suspects near Hata Chhak,” Angul SDPO Ramakant Mahalik, stated in the presser.
“Police seized two SUVs used in the crime, four country-made firearms, four live bullets, two steel Chapads, an iron axe, seven mobile phones, and Rs 7,000 in cash from the possession of the accused persons. The arrested will be forwarded to court,” the cop added.
