After days of intense heat, Odisha is likely to receive significant rainfall in the next 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre. With a cyclonic system developing near Bangladesh, a yellow warning has been issued for 21 districts.
This was informed by the IMD centre Director Manorama Mohanty on Wednesday.

According to official sources, amid scorching heat across Odisha, relief may be on the way as the regional meteorological centre has predicted widespread rainfall over the next 24 hours. A Yellow Warning has been issued for 21 districts, with heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds expected.
The department forecasts wind speeds of 30–40 kmph, accompanied by frequent lightning. Rainfall is likely to continue in different districts of the State till August 11, with more localised thunderstorms possible depending on the development of a cyclonic circulation over south Bangladesh by August 8.
This evolving weather system could further enhance rainfall activities across the State. Meanwhile, officials have confirmed that monsoon rains remain within the normal seasonal range, offering some balance despite the earlier dry spell.
“The upper air cyclonic circulation over central parts of Bangladesh persists and is now seen between 5.8 and 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward with height. A trough runs from northwest Bihar to southeast Bangladesh across northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal between 3.1 and 4.5 km above mean sea level,” the centre Director said.
“Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at many places over the districts of North Odisha and at a few places over the districts of South Odisha. Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the district of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh,” the centre Director stated.
“Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri, during the next 24 hours,” the centre Director expressed.
