Kisa Powell has been inducted into Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Powell is a cosmetologist and hair colorist who opened C.O.D.A. Curls in 2020 in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. Specializing in custom cuts and color, as well as various treatments for textured hair, C.O.D.A. Curls is becoming a well-known establishment in the area for more than just beauty. Named in honor of her parents, who are both deaf, C.O.D.A. stands for “child of a deaf adult.” A welcoming place for all patrons, especially the differently abled, Ms. Powell is proud to also operate as an advocate for the deaf community through her work.

Becoming an entrepreneur has been the highlight of Ms. Powell’s career, as she loves being her own boss and serving the underserved. Additionally, she takes great pride in seeing the look on her clients’ faces when they see the results in the mirror. Apart from the various services that she and her staff provide, Ms. Powell sells a variety of haircare products and strives to source several options that are all-natural, vegan, and sold by Black-owned businesses.

Growing up, American Sign Language was Ms. Powell’s first language. Learning to sign at just six months old, she often served as a translator and voice for both her mom and dad. As part of her commitment to her parents and her community, she conducts classes for the deaf community. Ms. Powell also volunteers her time at area beauty schools to teach the proper way of treating textured hair.

Ms. Powell attended cosmetology school while in high school, obtaining her license in 2009. She has since become a licensed hair colorist and a rëzo certified hair stylist. Gaining experience in her field, she worked for the Super Cuts franchise for seven years. She also enlisted in the U.S. National Guard, serving from 2010 to 2015. During her service overseas in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Ms. Powell was notably the go-to stylist for her fellow military soldiers.

In October 2020, Ms. Powell was featured in Vestavia Hills Magazine, which highlighted her life and career as the owner of C.O.D.A. Curls. Looking toward the future, she aspires to start her own line of hair care products and open an all-inclusive beauty school with interpreters and facilities for those in wheelchairs or those that require some other form of accessibility. Ms. Powell also hopes to collaborate with the Talladega School for the Deaf to help create an after-graduation program that helps students find employment.
