Mr. Cates began his career as a land-based electronics technician and calibration technician with the U.S. Coast Guard. He subsequently worked as a manager of the multiple launch rocket system with the U.S. Army. Mr. Cates further flourished as a logistics manager for the New Mexico Counter Drug Air Interdiction Detachment.

Mr. Cates found success as a military recruiter, career counselor, fire direction leader and team manager for airport security with the Vermont Army National Guard soon thereafter. Mr. Cates finished his military career, in combat operations management and then Sexual Assault Response program management and retired from the U.S. Army. Obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Excelsior College, he currently excels as the chief executive officer of the Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity. As a qualified professional, he is certified as a Level I sexual assault advocate. Mr. Cates has also obtained his certifications in crime victims’ rights and compensation presumptive eligibility.

For his exceptional efforts in the military and his career, Mr. Cates has accepted countless accolades, including five Army Commendation Medals, a Bronze Star Medal, a Combat Action Badge, a Humanitarian Service Medal, three Iraq Campaign Medals for Combat Service, two Meritorious Unit Commendations and the NGB Chief’s Recruiter Challenge Coin. More recently, he was recognized as the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce Hometown Hero as well as a NEXEN Hero by the NEXEN Tire & Purple Heart Foundation. In 2017, he was honored with the Habitat for Humanity Texas Mary Ruth Rodenbaugh Leadership Award. Civically, Mr. Cates has been active with the Memorial Baptist Church, the Texas A&M University’s Central Texas Service-Learning Advisory Board, the Central Texas College Building Trades Advisory Council, Habitat for Humanity, Texas Veterans Advisory Council and the Harker Heights High School Band Booster Club.
