He started his professional career as an Instructor then as an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry – Faculty of Science at Cairo University (1969-1976). He relocated to the USA in 1976 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in organic chemistry from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1980.

After two postdoctoral appointments at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC (1981-82) and SmithKline Beckman Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, PA (1983-85), he joined Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA) as a Teaching/Research Associate (1985-1986) then remained as Adjunct Professor (1986-2006).

He started his industrial career at the Process Chemistry Department of Wyeth Laboratories as Senior Chemist (1986-1987). He then joined the Process Chemistry Group at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development in 1987. He served as a Senior Scientist (1988-1990), Principal Scientist (1991-1994) and Research Fellow (1995-1997). In 1998 he was promoted to Senior Research Fellow and held this title until 2008.
