Sarasota FL, February 23, 2019 – The Sarasota Polo Club and the Women’s International Polo Network have announced the 2019 Sarasota Women’s Challenge Polo Tournament; Presented by Luhrsen Goldberg – Law Powered By Women®. The tournament will take place at the Sarasota Polo Club, February 27, 2019 – March 3, 2019. Just for Girls, Manatee County Girls Club, will join the tournament finals as a charitable beneficiary.
The tournament features approximately twelve women’s polo teams from across the United States segmented across three competitive handicap flights. The finals will be held on the Championship Field at the Sarasota Polo Club on Sunday March 3rd at 1pm and will be an elite level 14-16 goal match.
Traditionally a male-dominated sport, women were officially welcomed into the United States Polo Association in 1972 with Sue Sally Hale breaking the gender barrier to become the first woman member. A devoted advocate of women in polo, Hale was alleged to have disguised herself as a man in order to compete in polo tournaments throughout the 1950s and 60s. Hale opened doors, created opportunities and propelled the sport of polo forward inspiring generations of women polo players who followed.
Presently women make up the fastest growing segment of polo in the United States.
